Durham Bulls 2010 Baseball Season Starts Today!

DSC02352

The Durham Bulls open their 2010 season with a “Spring Training Showdown” game against the Tampa Bay Ray’s today, Saturday April 3rd at one o’clock.  After today’s season opener they will hit the road for two weeks of away games in Virginia and Georgia before returning to Durham to play the Norfolk Tide at home on April 15th.

If you live in the Triangle you need to go to at least one Durham Bulls game for the experience.  Even if you aren’t a huge baseball fan it is still a great way to spend the afternoon.  Ticket prices are very affordable ranging from $7 to $9 and can easily be purchased the day of the game at the box office.  A popular option is to head to the game a little early and hang out at Tyler’s Taproom across the street to grab a few pre-game beers.

The games are fun to watch and they have min-events between innings with thing like fan summa wrestling and kids racing Wool E. Bull around the bases.  The food at the stadium is pretty good (my wife claims to have had the best bean burrito she ever had there) and not as expensive as pro-events.  Beers go for around $5 and $6 and hey even have some good NC Carolina beers on tap.

During the summer home games on Friday nights include a free fireworks show after the game.  It’s actually a really good little show and worth sticking around a few extra minutes to see.  They also have a special fireworks show for the 4th of July celebration.  Those games are usually the most popular and probably the only time you really need to think about buying tickets in advance since they do sometimes sell out.

I tend to favor evening games.  The temperatures during the spring games in manageable but it can get quite hot during the summer.  If I do catch a game during the warmer summer months I try to get tickets in a section that has a portion of the stadium roof overhead to provide some shade and protection from the sun.  You can view the stadium seating chart here

I’m looking forward to catching several games this season and I highly recommend you check one out if you get the chance.  You can view the full 2010 Durham Bulls schedule here.

B.sweets Chocolate Returns to Raleigh!

DSC04305

The Market at Ravenscroft is an annual spring shopping event held at the Ravenscroft School in North Raleigh. The 5th annual event was held earlier this month from March 18th through the 20th. The Market draws over 70 vendors from across the country that travel to Raleigh to sell unique art, clothing, jewelry, women’s accessories, candies, and home and garden items.

A fan favorite at the Market is B.sweets, a family-owned candy business started by two sets of sisters from Southwestern Pennsylvania that makes decedent chocolate covered treats smothered in rich milk chocolate, like chocolate covered pretzels, graham crackers, and marshmallows.

The students at Ravenscroft like to gobble up the free samples of these tasty treats and drop subtle hints to their parents that these chocolates goodies would look great in their Easter baskets. My personal favorites are the chocoalte covered cookies and chocolate covered marshmallows, which are also sold on lollipop sticks and called “Pillow-Pops” (one of my favorites!).

A portion of the proceeds from the event at Ravenscroft are donated to support the WakeMed Children’s Hospital.  B.sweets also supports The Breast Cancer Research Foundation by donating a percentage of sales from designated products sold on their website.

For those of you with a sweet tooth who missed the Market at Ravenscroft don’t despair! B.sweets is running an Easter special with a 25% discount on online orders placed through March 31, 2010.  Just use the promo “BUNNY” to receive 25% off when you place your order online.

Wake Forest Herb Festival Returns – April 16-25, 2010

DSC01400

The Annual Herb Festival returns to Festival Park on White Street in downtown Wake Forest for ten days in April running from April 16-through the 25th.  This is perfect timing considering in this area the last frost date is typically April 15th.

The festival features low maintenance, organically grown herb plants and organic vegetables along with live entertainment and educational seminars. Last year they even had a beer stand from LoneRider Beer Co. selling refreshments. While this is a small event by “festival” standards, the Herb Fest is recognized as the largest herb and perennial festival East of the Mississippi.  Parking is ample and relatively easy along White Street and the offer red rider wagons and other carts to load up your plants (or tote your children around in).

Many of the herb plants I purchased last year ranged in price from $3-$4. The Festival does have a website, but it appears to be under construction at this point, but I will plan on posting more information in April about the scheduled musical acts and confirm whether or not you can expect another local brewery to attend the festival.
