Triangle Yarn Crawl
The Spring 2014 Triangle Yarn Crawl is a fun self-guided tour that connects fiber lovers who enjoy the adventure of discovering new local yarn shops in the Triangle. The crawl takes place during normal business hours on March 22-23, 2014 and includes nine local shops throughout the Triangle. Yarn crawl participants are provided with the means to develop their own self-guided itinerary for a weekend of exploration and fun and will receive a “Crawl Passport” to have stamped at each shop for promotions.

The crawl is sponsored by local retailers who are provided with a raffle prize that they fill with products. In addition to the raffle, each shop offers a different promotion and demonstration of their choice. Attendance is absolutely FREE. Yarn and other items in the participating shops are available for purchase, but purchasing items is not mandatory.

Registration
Registration opens February 24, 2014. Register here to receive your Crawl Passport! Be sure to present your Crawl Passport at each shop and have it stamped for promotions available to crawlers and to qualify for the Grand Prize drawing.

Plan Your Route
Check out the Yarn Crawl Map to plan your route. Don’t forget about lunch. Oh, and carpooling is highly encouraged and tons more fun.

Raffles
Each participating local yarn shop will have a raffle prize full of goodies. Just ask for your raffle ticket when you arrive at each shop. If you visit all nine participating shops and turn in your Crawl Passport at the last shop you visit, you’re automatically entered into the Grand Prize drawing.

FiberLove SWAP
Think secret santa full of yummy fiber, notions and more, but without the santa. FiberLove Swap participants must complete his/her profile by February 17, 2014. Profiles received after February 17, 2014 will be waitlisted and notified if someone cancels. Limited to the first 20 participants so sign up today!

Triangle Yarn Crawl Kickoff
Head over to The Twisted Knitter for the Crawl Kickoff Saturday morning between 9:30-10:30 am. Mingle with fellow crawlers. Exchange FiberLove SWAP goodies with your partner. Fuel your crawl Saturday with baked goods, coffee and more.

Carolina Fiber Fest 2014

Carolina FiberFest
Carolina FiberFest announces its annual event, taking place April 4-6 at Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds in Sanford, NC. Drawing over 1,500 fiber enthusiasts from the surrounding area and beyond, Carolina FiberFest is sure to delight festivalgoers of all ages. This family-friendly event features over 40 vendors selling fiber-related tools, wool, alpaca and cotton fiber, pottery and more; 20+ classes taught by experienced teachers like Donna Druchunas and Esther Rodgers; and free demonstrations from sheep shearing and herding to weaving and carding.

“Carolina FiberFest is a great event for all ages to learn the tradition of fiber arts, meet others who are passionate about the fiber arts, and stock up on supplies and tools,” says Michelle Odgers, co-director.

Valentine’s Day Ideas ~ February 14, 2014

I know things are getting down to the wire but I wanted to share some resources to those of you still working on your Valentine’s Day plans. Andrea Weigl, the awesome food writer at the News & Observer, has put together a great list of Valentine’s Day offerings across the Triangle here. The folks at WRAL Out & About have also shared a great list of suggestions.

I share a few of my own Valentine’s picks below. Whatever you end up doing I hope it is a great one!

    The French bakery in Cary is offering a special four-course dinner on Feb. 14 and 15 (menu below). They are offering seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 14 and at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15. Costs is $75 per couple. Limited reservations are available. Call 919-657-0657 for reservations.

    Local Chocolatiers 

    • Videri Chocolate Factory – viderichocolatefactory.com
      Videri Chocolate Factory in downtown Raleigh will be open on Valentines Day until 11pm. They are offering a complimentary glass of Champagne to enjoy while browsing their shops for chocolates to purchase. Videri also has great chocolates and a special Valentines gift pack offer. If you plan to buy chocolates, make sure you stop by early this week to avoid the rush on Friday.

    • Escazu Chocolates – http://www.escazuchocolates.com/
      Escazu is another great bean to bar chocolatier in Raleigh that has wonderful dark chocolate bars and confections. Here is a post I did about Escazu back in 2010. Again, if you plan to buy some of these great local chocolates make sure you stop by before Friday as I garuntee there will be a line out the door for last minute shoppers!

RAW Presents A Night of Local Art, Fashion, & Music in Raleigh – February 6th

The people at RAW:natural born artists are getting ready to kick off the 2014 season featuring some of the hottest indie talent in Raleigh this Thursday February 6th at the Lincoln Theater.

About RAW
RAW:natural born artists is an international independent arts organization that hand-selects and spotlights independent creatives in visual art, film, fashion, music, hair & makeup artistry, photography, models and performing art.

RAW’s mission is to provide up-and-coming artists of all creative realms with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity so that they might be seen, heard and loved.

Every other month they select approximately 30 up-and-coming Raleigh creatives to feature in a collaborative art showcase including musical performances, fashion shows, performing arts, visual artwork, photography, a host, DJ, and more.

What Can You Expect
RAW events are multi-faceted artistic showcases. Each event features a film screening, musical performance, fashion show, art gallery, performance art and a featured hairstylist and makeup artist. These artists are all local, hand-picked talent who have been chosen to feature at RAW.

RAW events feature a cash bar for cocktails while you enjoy the night. Dress code is cocktail attire, so dress the occasion and get ready for an artistic circus of creativity!

I know it is still November but Christmas events like the 2013 Raleigh Christmas Parade and the North Hills Tree lighting are set to kick off this Saturday (Nov. 23rd). Weekend Picks! Nov. 15th-17th

This week we have some live music in Raleigh on Friday night and a massive food truck rodeo in Durham on Sunday. Saturday rounds things out with suggestions for a cooking class in Cary and a visit to the Life & Science Museum in Durham. No matter how you choose to spend it, I hope you have a great weekend!

Live Music & Dinner at Sola Coffee & Cafe’– North Raleigh
Sola Coffee regularly hosts live music each Friday & Saturday around 7:30pm. This Friday they play host to a great local band performing live folk & bluegrass music . Museum of Life & Science – Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys – Durham
The new Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys exhibit opens up this weekend at the Museum this Saturday. Press a button or crank a wheel, and with a whirring hum, the sculptures of New York-based artist and tag sale purveyor Steve Gerberich come to life!  Constructed from recycled and found materials such as old machine parts, kitchen utensils, lighting fixtures, toys and carnival figurines, this highly entertaining exhibit offers museum-goers a unique way to interact with contemporary sculpture and explore the principles of simple mechanical motion.

Sunday November 17th

Pop-Up Sunday at Ornamentea – Downtown Raleigh
POP-UP Sunday is this Sunday from 12-5pm in the Ornamentea Parking Lot. The event provides local businesses, artists and the community a chance to mingle. This Sunday’s market will feature several artist vendors, local Beer, Food Trucks. Always a fun time and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Durham Food Truck Rodeo – Durham Central Park
This is the last large scale food truck rodeo scheduled for 2013. They will have over 60 trucks in attendance. These events are always a lot of fun and make for good people watching while trying food from local trucks. As always try to get there early to avoid the lines.
