Shop Local – A Visit To The Wake Forest Farmer’s Market!

WFFM8152010

Last weekend I found myself in Wake Forest to get some  new tires put on my car.  On my way to the auto shop I decided to swing by the Wake Forest Farmer’s Market  located on South White Street in Downtown Wake Forest.  The market is held every saturday April through November from 8am – noon.  It is probably the best small Farmer’s Market in the Triangle in my opinion.  Yes, the Durham and and Carrboro markets are great, and the State Farmer’s Market in Raleigh is fantastic, but for folks in Wake Forest and North Raleigh the Wake Forest market offers a great selection of local produce at a convenient location.

The market regulalry hosts 20 to 25 different local vendors.  The offerings range from seasonal fruits and veggies to local chicken, beef, and pork along with farm fresh eggs and goat cheese.  More often than not someone is on hand with local honey and the folks selling homemade jams are regulars there.  There is also usually a booth selling cut flowers and a few artisans with pottery and woodwork art.  Every time I go there is some sort of musician on hand entertaining the crowd.  Parking along South White Street is pretty easy and you can be in and out of the market in a jiffy if you need to, though it is easy to kill 20-30 minutes chatting with the friendly vendors if you aren’t in a hurry.

One thing to keep in mind is that due to a recent change in policy dogs are no longer allowed at the Market.  It seems that the liability is an issue as well as concerns from the local health department.  I’m pretty sure dogs are not allowed at most if the other Farmer’s Markets in the area as well.   So if you are off to the market make sure you leave the furry little guy at home.  While the market typically comes to an end in November keep an eye out for special market events around the holidays and later in the winter.  I hear they are going to try to open on a limited schedule, maybe once a month, during the off-season.

When you visit the market I recommend you stroll a block up the street and grab some coffee at the Wake Forest Coffee Co.  They serve great coffee and have a lot of indoor seating and of course offer free wi-fi access.  There is also a wine shop located on the second floor in the same building as the coffee bar.  Between the market and the shops located along South White Street it is real easy to find an excuse to spend your Saturday morning and afternoon in Downtown Wake Forest.  For more information aboiut the Wake Forest Farmer’s market check out their website or check out their facebook fan page.

My first Only Burger!

OnlyBurger1

Last Saturday I had a craving for a great burger and felt like doing a little exploring.  That’s when I hopped on twitter and saw the tweet that Only Burger truck would be staioned in the parking lot of Sam’s Quick Shop in Durham for the afternoon.  I hopped in my car and headed on over to take advantage of this perfect opportunity to try Only Burger for the first time and check out the extensive beer selection at Sam’s that I’ve heard so much about.

OnlyBurger2

I got a single burger with a side of fries and a diet coke for just over $7.  The burer and fries were excellent.  My mouth is watering right now just thinking abut how good they were.  I really like how they toast the bun giving it that little something extra that compliments the burger oh so well.  The shoestring type fries were tasty too. They weren’t too oily or salty like they are at most fast food places.  The folks at Only Burger make everything to order so it takes a few minutes for them to complete your order, but the short wait is more than worth it!

You can follow Only Burger on their facebook fanpage and track where they will be located each day by following them on twitter at @onlyburger.

Raleigh Wide Open 5 – Fayetteville Street Comes Alive!

RWO4

This past Saturday marked the 5th Raleigh Wide Open Festival since it began in 2006 after the Fayetteville Street pedestrian mall was opened up traffic.  As it has in the past, the event featured local musicians on multiple stages and a host of food vendors that line the street from the Capital building all the way down to the new City Plaza.  I hit the event twice during the course of the day.  I went down in the early afternoon to hear some of the first music acts and returned later in the evening to have a few drinks at The Mint and catch the fireworks finale.

RWO2

It is estimated that this year’s event drew around 60,000 people.  While still a success, this is about 40K people shy of last year’s record attendance of 100,000.  I think the smaller crowd was due to two things this year. The first being the overcast weather with constant threat of rain.  The sesond being the fact that while there was tons of music, there was no headline act or “main” stage that draw in a huge crowd.  I think that is one aspect of the festival I would like to see return in the future. Without that main act at the end of the festival things felt somewhat disjointed and incomplete.

RWO6

It felt like the crowd actually thinned out as the day wore on instead of things picking up and getting busier as the event transitioned into the evening hours. Sure, the Barenaked Ladies had a concert at the new amphitheater a block away, but I don’t really consider that a part of Raleigh Wide Open because it was physically separated from Fayetteville Street and you needed a ticket for the concert (prices ranged from $35-$58).  That being said, we did have a lot of fun and I look forward to future festivals in downtown.  You can see the rest of my photos from Raleigh Wide Open Five in my flickr photo album.
