Triangle ArtWorks Connects Creatives in Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill

 TAW

A new organization has formed in the Triangle to connect the creative community in the area. Check out the press release below for more information about the Triangle ArtWorks orginization and how it can help you and other artists in the Triangle connect!

Triangle ArtWorks, Inc., a newly formed nonprofit organization, announced today the launch of its website, www.triangleartworks.org and a series of events to link the creative community of the Triangle area and the public.   Triangle ArtWorks website is a virtual platform to educate and connect the artistic and creative community in the Triangle region, their supporters and the public via discussion forums, articles, blogs, and a clearinghouse for regional resources.  The organization is hosting several launch events in the Triangle during the month of August to promote regional networking and collaboration.

Triangle ArtWorks’ charitable and educational mission is to provide services, support and resources to cultivate a vibrant creative community in the Triangle region of North Carolina.  From large corporate campuses in Research Triangle Park, to artist cooperatives in Chatham County, the Triangle region has attracted creative talent from across the nation.  In fact, the Triangle’s success in attracting artists and creative people has garnered national praise and attention.  Yet, the region has lacked a central resource for artists to come together for support, resources and education, for supporters to have an easier way to connect with and support artists and arts groups, and to promote the importance of this community to our region.
Founder Beth Yerxa started Triangle ArtWorks to “create a sense of cohesion for the Triangle’s creative community and its supporters.”  Yerxa explained, “The Triangle is made up of many separate towns and cities, with multiple arts councils, different governments, and different priorities for supporting the arts and the creative community.   The idea for the website is to have a regional resource for information, education and discussion about what matters to the creative community of the Triangle.  We need a better way to connect this community across disciplines and county lines.”
Triangle ArtWorks website includes opportunities to connect via discussion forums and blogs, as well as a directory of Triangle-area arts organizations and links to services and resources.  Triangleartworks.org plans to monitor and report on the economic and political news and activities that affect the creative community on both a regional and national level.  Local arts organizations will also have a place to connect and post topics for discussion among regional arts patrons, supporters and volunteers.

Launching the website is the virtual beginning of Triangle Artworks.  Yerxa has been meeting with members of the Triangle arts community for the last year to lay the foundation for the organization.  She has been able to build the framework for the organization from this direct feedback and from researching similar organizations like New York Foundation for the Arts, Artists Trust in Washington state and Springboard for the Arts in Minnesota.  Yerxa states, “ I saw the impact these organizations were having on their arts communities, and their regions as a whole, and believe our strong regional arts community would benefit from a similar organization.”

Michael Lowder, executive director of Artsplosure, Raleigh’s downtown arts festival, added, “I think Triangle ArtWorks could be the kind of resource that turns casual audience members into informed partners in advocating and supporting the arts in the Triangle. “The organization may also help the arts community think regionally in planning and programming, which will be a good thing.”

Triangle ArtWorks is sponsoring a series of public launch events throughout the Triangle in the month of August. In Raleigh, a launch party will be hosted by Visual Art Exchange from 6-9pm on Friday, August 6th, to coincide with the monthly First Friday Artwalk in downtown Raleigh. In Durham, Golden Belt will host a gathering on August 20th  from 6-9pm during that City’s Third Friday Artwalk.  The FRANK gallery in Chapel Hill will also be hosting an event on Thursday, August 19, from 5-8.

Looking for Organic Wine? Check out Sip … a wine store in Cary!

DSC06077

Last Friday my wife and I met up with some friends to check out a new wine shop in Cary called Sip …. a wine store.  They were holding a free tasting event that night which offered us the perfect opportunity to explore this uique shop.  Sip is special in that they are the only wine shop in the Triangle that only carries Organic and eco-friednly wines.

We are huge fans of wine but, whenever possible we try to buy organic, but most wine shops only have a handful of such offerings.  Not so at Sip, where you can find a wide variety of certified organic wines and other wines created using biodynamic farming practices that incorporate more earth-friendly techniques.  I appreciate the environmental aspect of organic agricultural practices while my wife is more interested in the fact that certified organic wines usually have no added sulfites.

The shop is located in Cary’s Preston Walk shopping center (map) and even though I live in N. Raleigh the trip over there was fast and easy.  I just took  I-540 to the Chapel Hill Road exit and was pulling up to the shop within a few minutes.  When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to see that in addition to having several great wines to tast and light munchies (including gluten free chips) that there was live music!  April, the owner of the shop, was very friendly and knowledgable about the wines and was happy to answer all of our questions.

In addition to the large variety of wines we were  also excited to see that  they offered wines from a wide range of price points with many great options in the $9 to $15 range.  Several of the wines we tasted that night were less than $10 and we had a hard time deciding which we liked most.

The cool thing about Sip is that in addition to the tastings you can purchase a 1/2 glass or full glass of wine, which we did and ended up spending an hour just relaxing listening to the live guitar music and chatting with the owner.  They also seel organic beers and ciders whcih you can buy by the six pack or by individual if you are looking to try something new.  They even have some of them cold so you can enjoy a beer in the store.  Hanging out there on Friday evening is easy enough since the shop has a warm country boutique vibe to right down to chalk board signs and the large rustic wooden “butcher-block” like tasting bar.

Another free tasting event is scheduled for tonight (7/30) where they will be tasting organic and biodynamic wines from Benziger from 4-8pm. Stop by if get the chance.  You will be glad you did!  For more information about Sip and to learn about future tasting events at their shop check out their website or join their facebook fanpage.

The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is bringing two TV stars who specialize in science entertainment — Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, hosts of the Discovery Channel television show “MythBusters” — to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of the North Carolina Science Festival in Septmeber. UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center coordinates the festival, with participation by museums, parks, community sites and other facilities throughout the state.

During the 90-minute program, Savage and Hyneman will share stories from behind the scenes of their popular show. They will also feature special video presentations of spectacular explosions and other “for fans only” outtakes.

The program includes a question-and-answer session led by Chancellor Holden Thorp, with opportunities for questions from the audience.

Tickets go on sale July 26, through www.tarheelblue.com. Lower-level seats are $28 per person, and upper-level seats are $18 per person.

A limited number of premium tickets are available at $100 per person. Each premium ticket includes a meet-and-greet reception before the event with an opportunity to have a photo taken with Savage and Hyneman, reserved seating in front of the stage and a North Carolina Science Festival T-shirt.

Both Savage and Hyneman are known for their work in special effects. Savage’s credits include more than a dozen feature films, including “Star Wars,” “The Matrix” and “Terminator” movies. Hyneman has produced effects for more than 800 commercials and designed fighting machines for “Robot Wars” and “BattleBots.”

In each episode of their TV show, Savage, Hyneman and their team of investigators apply scientific method to commonly held beliefs, testing myths with lava lamps, rockets, sharks, port-a-potties and other items not found in the typical science lab. Their experiments have included converting a vacuum cleaner into a jet engine, swinging 360 degrees around a swingset and floating on a raft filled with helium.

Savage and Hyneman have completed nearly 170 episodes and tested more than 700 myths for the Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters,” which first aired in 2003 and just received its second Emmy Award nomination for “outstanding reality program.”
