Gardening Season Arrives To The Triangle!

 DSC04661

I made my first trip of the year  to the Raleigh State Farmer’s Market today and was happy to see loads of vendors selling vegetable plants like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, corn, watermelon, lettuce, squash ect. They also had tons of herbs on hand and various spring and summer flowers.  Not yet  as many food (veggie vendors) yet, but I suspect that their numbers will grow in the upcoming weeks as more things come in season.

I found a guy selling herbs in 4-plant packs for $1.50.  I picked up cilantro, oregano, english thyme, dill, and chives. I also bought a nice spearmint plant for $2.50.  There was tons of basil and other herbs as well.

I’m looking forward  to planting them all in my square foot garden later this week!

Picture of the Week – Person Street Pharmacy

DSC04610

This week’s picture is a shot of the side entrance to the Person Street Pharmacy in downtown Raleigh. They have been open since 1910 and are the only pharmacy in Raleigh with an old fashioned soda fountain. They have milk shakes and malts too! I plan on doing a full blog post on them in the near future!

As always, if you have a photo you would like to submit for consideration as picture of the week please email it to me at triangleexplorer@gmail.com.  If your picture is selected I will of course properly credit you and provide a link to your website or blog so people can see more of your work!

Durham Bulls 2010 Baseball Season Starts Today!

DSC02352

The Durham Bulls open their 2010 season with a “Spring Training Showdown” game against the Tampa Bay Ray’s today, Saturday April 3rd at one o’clock.  After today’s season opener they will hit the road for two weeks of away games in Virginia and Georgia before returning to Durham to play the Norfolk Tide at home on April 15th.

If you live in the Triangle you need to go to at least one Durham Bulls game for the experience.  Even if you aren’t a huge baseball fan it is still a great way to spend the afternoon.  Ticket prices are very affordable ranging from $7 to $9 and can easily be purchased the day of the game at the box office.  A popular option is to head to the game a little early and hang out at Tyler’s Taproom across the street to grab a few pre-game beers.

The games are fun to watch and they have min-events between innings with thing like fan summa wrestling and kids racing Wool E. Bull around the bases.  The food at the stadium is pretty good (my wife claims to have had the best bean burrito she ever had there) and not as expensive as pro-events.  Beers go for around $5 and $6 and hey even have some good NC Carolina beers on tap.

During the summer home games on Friday nights include a free fireworks show after the game.  It’s actually a really good little show and worth sticking around a few extra minutes to see.  They also have a special fireworks show for the 4th of July celebration.  Those games are usually the most popular and probably the only time you really need to think about buying tickets in advance since they do sometimes sell out.

I tend to favor evening games.  The temperatures during the spring games in manageable but it can get quite hot during the summer.  If I do catch a game during the warmer summer months I try to get tickets in a section that has a portion of the stadium roof overhead to provide some shade and protection from the sun.  You can view the stadium seating chart here

I’m looking forward to catching several games this season and I highly recommend you check one out if you get the chance.  You can view the full 2010 Durham Bulls schedule here.

Picture of the Week – PieBird in Downtown Raleigh

DSC04545

This weeks picture was taken on Person Street in Downtown Raleigh earlier this week.  It looks like a new pie shop called PieBird will fill the location previously home to Conti’s Italian Market.  No word yet on exactly when they plan to open, but I look forward to stopping in when they do and getting a pie on the way home from work! I hope to get some more pics when they open to share in a future blog post!

B.sweets Chocolate Returns to Raleigh!

DSC04305

The Market at Ravenscroft is an annual spring shopping event held at the Ravenscroft School in North Raleigh. The 5th annual event was held earlier this month from March 18th through the 20th. The Market draws over 70 vendors from across the country that travel to Raleigh to sell unique art, clothing, jewelry, women’s accessories, candies, and home and garden items.

A fan favorite at the Market is B.sweets, a family-owned candy business started by two sets of sisters from Southwestern Pennsylvania that makes decedent chocolate covered treats smothered in rich milk chocolate, like chocolate covered pretzels, graham crackers, and marshmallows.

The students at Ravenscroft like to gobble up the free samples of these tasty treats and drop subtle hints to their parents that these chocolates goodies would look great in their Easter baskets. My personal favorites are the chocoalte covered cookies and chocolate covered marshmallows, which are also sold on lollipop sticks and called “Pillow-Pops” (one of my favorites!).

A portion of the proceeds from the event at Ravenscroft are donated to support the WakeMed Children’s Hospital.  B.sweets also supports The Breast Cancer Research Foundation by donating a percentage of sales from designated products sold on their website.

For those of you with a sweet tooth who missed the Market at Ravenscroft don’t despair! B.sweets is running an Easter special with a 25% discount on online orders placed through March 31, 2010.  Just use the promo “BUNNY” to receive 25% off when you place your order online.

To learn more about B.sweets you can join their Facebook Fan Page.
