The Rialto – A different kind of movie experience in Raleigh

This past weekend my wife and I went out to see the Jeff Bridge’s movie “Crazy Heart”.  We enjoy going to the movies and one of our favorite places to go in Raleigh is the Rialto Theater in the Five Points area on the fringe of downtown Raleigh. The Rialto offers a different movie experience than what you typically get at one of the big multiplex cinemas. It only has one screen and typically shows independent and art house style films. Because it is a smaller theater they don’t have a lot of staff, but what they lack in numbers they make up for in service. It isn’t uncommon for the person working the box office to be the same person to help you at the concession stand. Oh yeah, make sure you stop by an ATM on your way because they don’t accept credit cards at theater.

The Rialto may be an older theater, but they have comfortable new seats that have those handy drink holders. The seating is not “stadium style” but more like a traditional theater with a gradual slope and a movie screen set up on a stage in the front (pictures). There is some interesting recessed lighting that gives the theater a unique ambiance while you are waiting for your movie to start. You can buy the typical movie candy and popcorn at the concession stand in the small quaint lobby but the great thing is you can also purchase beer and wine at the theater to enjoy with your movie. They have several different beers in bottles and on tap. Often times more than a few are brews made in North Carolina if not from a local brewery located right here in the Triangle. On trip there this weekend I had pint of a Shotgun Betty from the local LoneRider Brewing Company.  I’m not usually a huge fan of wheat beers, but I found this one to be very good

One of the great thing about catching a movie there is that since it is located in the heart of Five Points you can easily grab at bite to eat at Lily’s Pizza or The Point before your show and then just walk over to the theater. Or after the movie you can drop into Third Place for a late night coffee of the Haye’s Barton Cafe for one of the famous pieces of cake. Parking can be a little tight on Glenwood on weekends, but I find there is always ample parking in the school parking lot just around the corner on Fairview Road (you are allowed to park there during the evenings and weekends).  Oh, and remember, if you go to the last show on Friday night, you might be lucky enough to see the folks headed to The Rocky Horror Picture show, which screens every Friday at midnight.

Take A Free Ride On The Downtown Raleigh R-Line Circulator Bus!

If you are headed to downtown Raleigh  be sure to check out the free R-Line Circulator Bus. This free bus service loops around downtown connecting the central business district and its ample parking with the restaurants, bars, and venues along Glenwood Avenue South and the lower portion of downtown by the new Convention Center and Moore Square.

The two bus system runs loops every 15 minutes with multiple stops at points of interest along the way (map). Hours of operation for the service are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. While the stops aren’t very far apart, make sure you know which one is closest to you final destination. The bus will not just stop just anywhere for you (I’ve seen people ask and get denied).

My wife and I took the bus a few times this past summer when we were visiting downtown to attend concerts in Moore Square. It was really easy finding a place to park in the big vacant government building lots along Peace Street and take the quick bus ride down to Moore square were parking can be tight and cost you a few dollars. It is also kind of fun to ride because you essentially are getting a mini-tour of downtown Raleigh and meet other folks who are out for a night on the town.

According to a recent news and observer article the R-line carried over 150,000 passengers between its inception last February 13, 2009 and December 5, 2009.  While it may not be used as often as it could, I think this is a step in the right direction for downtown Raleigh and a sign of more good things to come. I’ll see you on the bus!

2nd Annual Cuegrass Festival Returns to The Pit ~ April 17, 2010

The word on the street is that the second annual ‘Cuegrass Festival will occur on the afternoon of Saturday April 17th on the street outside The Pit at 328 W. Davie Street in downtown Raleigh.

Last year’s  Festival was  comprised of beers from LoneRider and Aviator breweries, three NC bands (Old Habits, Filmore Valley Boys and Town Mountain) as well as The Pit’s famous bbq and the “Pigs on Parade” silent auction (which features piggy banks from local artists sold to raise money for Feed the Farm, a local non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to N.C. farmers in need).

The Cuegrass Festival is a family-friendly event.  People of all ages make up the crowd and many bring lawn chairs and blankets to set up in front of the stage to relax with their kids and listen to an afternoon of great music.  You can heck the event website for more information.

Winterfest Ice Skating Rink in Raleigh’s Downtown City Plaza

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the new outdoor ice skating rink located in downtown Raleigh’s New City Plaza before it closes for the season on February 15th. The rink is situated directly across the street from the new Marriot hotel at the southern end of Fayetteville Street. It opened back on December 4th and will remain open through February 15th due to popular demand.  The rink itself is 45’ x 85’ in size and has maximum capacity of 140 skaters. The cost of admission is $6 and includes the skate rental. I spent some time in City plaza over the Holidays and was happy to see the rink getting a lot of use. It seems to be very popular with families and kids.

You can check out the Winterfest Website for special events. During the holidays they had “skate with Santa” night and also provided live music entertainment and outdoor movies some nights. They also have regular “date night specials” when Couples can show their receipt from local participating restaurants to receive a $4 discount for admission for two to the ice rink.  They also offer free carriage rides e from 6 pm-9 pm on date nights for anyone wearing their ice rink admission wristband.

On Valentine’s Day Sunday, February 14 complimentary rickshaw and carriage rides will be offered from 5 pm-9 pm to anyone who has paid for admission to the rink.  These rickshaw rides will begin in the 400 block of Fayetteville Street and will circle around the Capitol.  According to the Winterfest website, the rickshaws will provide romantic music, a rose, and a blanket to keep you warm.

Enjoy Wine and Art at Seaboard Wine Warehouse in Downtown Raleigh!

Recently I took an out of town guest to downtown Raleigh last night to check out some art as part of the local “First Friday” celebration. Usually we head to Artspace but decided instead to check out the artwork being featured at the Seaboard Wine Warehouse located in the Seaboard Station next to Logan’s Nursery. I love this wine store because they have agreat selection of wines, friendly staff, and they offer free wine tastings on Saturdays from 12-4 and also sell wine “flights” on Thursday and Friday evenings. They now even have some new tables set up in the tasting bar area where you can relax and drink a bottle of your favorite vino with friends.

Each month Seaboard features the photography or paintings of a local artists. During my most recent visit they were featuring the oil paintings and photography of Annelies Gentile. I highly recommend you check out Seaboard if you are in the downtown area and looking to pick up a great bottle of wine or just looking for something different to do. It is a great way to meet people if you are new to the area. You can read more about the Seaboard Wine Warehouse and its tasting bar and other events on their website here: Seaboard Website
