Coffee & Community – A Visit to Raleigh Coffee Company

Raleigh Coffee Company

Raleigh Coffee Company Roasting Facility

Did you know there is a great local coffee roaster located right here in North Raleigh? It’s called Raleigh Coffee Company and they are creating some excellent coffee roasts and making a big impact on the local coffee community here in the Triangle. I first tried their coffee this past winter through the Raleigh Coffee Club and have since become a big fan of their roasts. Overtime I started following them on their social media feeds through twitter and facebook and grew to appreciate how they both support the local community and strive to educate the consumer about coffee in a friendly and approachable way.

Raleigh Coffee Company

The Coffee Roaster

Raleigh Coffee Company’s roasting facility is tucked away in very cool nook behind the retail space of North Raleigh Meat House in the Quail Corners shopping center along Falls of Neuse Road. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to stop by their headquarters and talk to Raleigh Coffee Company founder and owner Joe Bland. I went there hoping to learn more about the coffee he is roasting and his mission to bring great coffee to the community and foster the local coffee culture in the Triangle. I left there with my head filled with new coffee knowledge and feeling inspired by what this company represents.

Raleigh Coffee Company Owner Joe Bland Roasting Coffee Beans

Joe started Raleigh Coffee Company back in 2012 after spending years home roasting and tweaking coffee profiles in his spare time. He initially sold his coffee through an online store, but as his customer base grew he obtained the space at the Meat House to roast out of to increase production to meet the increased demand. Since then he has already started selling his coffee at various retail locations and restaurants & cafes throughout the Triangle.

It was great to hang out in this space surrounded by all the coffee equipment and get a better understanding of how a small local roaster operates. Joe was great and took time to explain to me the process he goes through to obtain quality beans and the nuances of working with the coffee roaster to get the timing and temperature just right to develop the desired flavor profile. But making great coffee is just part of the mission.

Pulling a Shot of Espresso

Pulling a Shot of Espresso

On the morning I stopped by Joe was roasting up some Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. This coffee can be described as complex with fruity notes. It is naturally processed coffee. Naturally processed coffees typically have heavier mouthfeel, lower acidity levels and intense, exotic flavor profiles. He also had some Tanzania coffee he had roasted the day before. The Tanzania is a bolder earthy coffee that makes a great espresso with bright notes of lemon and dark chocolate making for what Joe described as a multi-layered orange, lemon, and chocolate espresso shot.

Espresso & Pour Over Coffee

Espresso & Pour Over Coffee

Joe used some of these beans to create a pour over coffee as well as shots of espresso to demonstrate how the different methods highlighted the coffee differently. He also gave me a sample of the beans to experiment with at home and I made some incredible iced coffee with the Yirgacheffe using my AeroPress. In addition to the Tanzania and Yirgacheffee, Raleigh Coffee Company also roast coffee from Costa Rica, Guatemala, and even offers a Honduras decaf.

Raleigh Coffee Company is also very active in the community and spearhead different “Bean Projects” throughout the year. These projects are initiative designed to generate support for charitable causes through funding for inspiring ideas and needs locally, nationally, and globally.

In February Raleigh Coffee Company teamed up with Love Wins Ministries for a Valentines Day coffee and coffee bag special. $5 from each bag went to benefit the homelessness in Raleigh. This past June, Joe and his friends created Team RCC – a team of 20 athletes that competed in the Ironman Raleigh 70.3 triathlon. The team used the event to help raise money for the “We Build People” campaign for the Triangle YMCA to help fund scholarships, for kids of all ages, to attend a multi-sport summer camp.

There are also two future projects planned for later this year. This Fall Raleigh Coffee Company will serve coffee alongside some greatest local chefs in Raleigh at the American Cancer Society’s “Raleigh Roundup” event on October 19th at Marbles Museum. Then this winter they will have a Christmas Bean Project. A big initiative to help raise money for Help One Now. The funds will go towards a playground for a community in Haiti.

I truly enjoy the Triangle’s great local coffee scene and feel fortunate to have a great local roaster in our community like the one Joe has created with Raleigh Coffee Company. I highly recommend you pick up a bag of their beans or stop by one of the local cafes & restaurants serving their coffee and give it a try.

DSC06331

Matthew & Jane of Triangle Raw Foods

Do you like to eat healthy and enjoy the benefits of organic raw food and vegan and gluten free options. These are not always the easiest types of food to find, but we are lucky enough to have a business like Triangle Raw Foods (TRF) here in the Triangle to help meet this need. Triangle Raw Foods was started by Chef Matthew Daniels and Jane Howard Crutchfield out of a mutual love for health and good food.  They embody the raw food movement by providing organic, gluten-free, vegan raw food options to our community using as many local, organic ingredients as possible, and really value the importance of supporting our local economy.  TRF has steadily grown over the past two years from a weekly delivery service to a food truck, and they are now looking to expand and open their very own prep kitchen and café space where they can prepare and serve their raw-food, vegan, and gluten-free offerings.

The TRF food truck has been a huge part of thier growth, but they are ready to grow and take things to the next level. Their long-term goal is to be able to serve freshly prepared raw food meals in a small cafe setting. Matthew and Jane plan to host pop-up dinners and raw food prep classes in their new café, and envision TRF becoming a place for community members to swing by for a quick healthy bite or pick up food to go. Before they can do that, they will need to build and equip a commercial kitchen. TRF has set up a community fundraising campaign online with Indiegogo with the hopes of raising the necessary $25,000 needed to cover the basics of the expansion. To learn more about TRF’s vision or to contribute to their campaign, check out their video below and visit their Indiegogo fundraising site here.

Jitters Coffee ~ Local Coffee On The Go In Cary!

photo9

Jitters Coffee ~ Cary, NC

Update: Jitters is now closed. The owners have opened up a coffee shop at a new location called  Racin Java in Fuquay Varina. Visit their facebook page here.

I love to explore locally owned coffee shops in the Triangle and recently my coffee adventures took me to a unique little drive thru coffee shop in Cary called Jitters Coffee. Jitters is located in the entrance to the Food Lion shopping center parking lot off Kildaire Farm road just outside of downtown Cary. There are two things that make this little coffee shop so unique. The first is that it is a drive-thru coffee business that operates out of what I would describe as a coffee “hut”. You pull up to Jitters in your car and a friendly barista takes your order, creates your drink and hands it to you through a window. The second thing is Jitters is the only place in Cary that serves locally roasted Carrboro Coffee.

photo8

Jitters Latte made with Carrboro Coffee

Don’t let the small size of Jitters fool you. They offer a full selection of coffee and espresso drinks that rivals the menu of any larger coffee shop. They even have fruit smoothies and a host of flavored shots to add to your favorite hot or cold beverage and offer various seasonal specialty drinks throughout the year. Their menu even features a frozen espresso drink called a “Granita” which is similar to a frappe but has a lot less calories. I had a sample of their Granita on my first visit and it was delicious. Of course my two favorite coffee drinks are lattes and cortados, and on this occasion I had a perfectly crafted latte (pictured above) and it even had some cool latte art action going on.

The Drive-Thru Window at Jitters

Jitters has been serving the faithful coffee crowd in Cary for several years now but is under new Management as of October 2012. That’s when local residents Jennifer Vaaler and Brett Coleman took over the business. Since taking the reigns, Jennifer & Brett have brought new inspiration to Jitters by offering locally roasted Carrboro Coffee, which is one of my favorite coffee roasters – their espresso is amazing! They have also been updating the landscaping around the coffee hut by planting a cool little garden out front surrounding the larger than life coffee mug fountain. They even added some cool tropical banana plants along the backside of the hut making Jitters feel and look like a little coffee oasis.

Jitters ~ A Coffee Oasis!

When it comes to great coffee spots, it is the little things the count. For example, while I was at Jitters taking pictures I saw several regulars pull up, Jenn & Brett knew them by name and began making them their “usual” drinks without even having to be asked. A neat little finishing touch on each hot drink is an easy to remove lady bug sticker on the “to go” cup lid to keep the steam in and the coffee warm. I highly recommend local coffee fans check out Jitters if you are looking for a new place to grab your coffee on the go or just want to try something new. I think you will be glad you did!

(Jitters is open 6:30am until 4pm Monday through Friday, 8am-3pm Saturday, and closed Sundays.)

Linacucina Brings Italian Inspired Cakes and Baked Goods to Raleigh!

305

Samples of baked goodies from Linacucina of Raleigh, NC

Linacucina, a local bakery specializing in Italian inspired baked goods was founded by Raleigh resident Lynn Taddeo. Lynn grew up in Montreal as part of a large Italian family and has many fond childhood memories of spending time in her mom’s kitchen watching her relatives bake. When Lynn moved to Raleigh she missed her food and traditions and decided to bring those Italian specialties to the Triangle. Linacucina specializes in custom order cakes, cupcakes, pastries and wedding favors. I recently received a few samples of goodies from Linacucina and they were so yummy I wanted to share my review.

103

Pizelle

I should point out that my family owned and operated a wedding reception hall in New Jersey for over 50 years. I started working there as a dishwasher when I was just twelve years old and continued to work there as a bartender through my college years. During that time I have had my fair share of wedding cakes and Italian pastries. With that little qualifier out of the way, I’ll get right to it. Linacucina ranks right up there with the best of them!

Of the three samples I tried I particularly enjoyed the Pizelle (pictured above). A Pizelle is best described as a simple waffle cookie. Tradition is to make them with anise (giving them a hint of liquorice) but Linacucina’s Pizelle are made with vanilla which I liked even better. These cookies are thin and light, but have a great buttery and vanilla flavor. They are pretty much melt in your mouth good and can be enjoyed as a stand alone treat, but I also enjoyed nibbling on one while I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

405

Chiacchiene

Chiacchiene is a lemon scented fried cookie with powdered sugar. These cookies were incredibly light and airy. Although they are dusted with powdered sugar they are not overly sweet. In fact I found that the sweetness of the sugar and hint of lemon compliment each other very well. There were several Chiacchiene in the sample bag sent to me by Linacucina and I shared them with my wife (these were her favorite). We found them to be the perfect treat to enjoy with our evening coffee and tea.

304

Taralli

Taralli is an Italian hard bread sick make with anise and chili flakes. They are known by some as an “Italian Pretzel”. These were my absolute favorite of three samples I tried. The mild spiciness of the chili flakes was unexpected and made for a very tasty flavor. I also liked how the pretzels were firm and crisp, while not being too hard. I have aconfession to make about my experience with the Taralli as well. They were so fresh and tasty when I first opened the sample bag that I ate them all in one sitting before I had the chance to take a picture of one of them close up!

All in all I really enjoyed all three samples of the baked goods from Linacucina and highly recommend them for people looking for locally made baked goods for their next wedding or party. The samples I received were packed in nice little gift bags and containers with ribbon which would make for great wedding favors. As I mentioned above, Linacucina also creates custom wedding cakes and cupcakes for wedding celebrations. To view photos of her wedding cakes and the other baked treats check out the Linacucina website and facebook page. You can also find a selection of their tasty treats for sale at the Electric Beanz Coffee shop in Raleigh.

Rise in Durham – A Donut & Biscuit Lover’s Paradise!

DSC07347

Rise

For the past few months now I’ve been eagerly following the progress of a new donut and biscuit shop that just recently opened in Durham. It is called “Rise” and is located in the Renaissance Village shopping center just behind Southpoint Mall. The guys behind Rise are the masterminds who introduced the Triangle to the insanely popular OnlyBurger food truck, so expectations have been high. Rise has only been open a few weeks now, but already seems to be off to a great start and regulalryl draws large crowds each morning. I stopped by during their first week open and immediately realized that I was not the only one eagerly awaiting their arrival!

DSC07332

The menu & ordering at the counter

Rise features a host of both donut and biscuit options that changes almost daily. You can keep up with the daily menu by following their facebook page where they post a picture of the menu each morning. The biscuit sandwich menu the day I visited included old favorites like a biscuit with eggs, bacon, and locally made peanut butter and jellies. I noted they get their peanut butter from Big Spoon Roasters peanut butter (out of Durham) which is a favorite of mine. They also had some more involved biscuits with things like southern chicken salad, country ham, creamy mac & cheese, and pork chop.

DSC07350

Bacon Biscuit

I opted for one of their more basic biscuits that simply had two nice crispy bacon strips. I also made a quick decision and bought a raspberry jelly donut and a big apple fritter. The biscuit was nice and buttery and just flaky enough without being to hard or too soft and doughy. I was thrilled to see the bacon was nice and cooked as I prefer my bacon to be on the well done side. I enjoyed my biscuit with a nice cup of locally roasted coffee. I was happy to see that Rise is using coffee from locally owned Bean Traders Coffee which operates just down the road from their location.

Saturday morning crowd

Of course, I couldn’t make a trip to Rise and leave without first trying a few of their awesome looking donuts. Like their biscuits the donut menu is constantly changing so they post an update each day on their facebook page. I am a little old school when it comes to donuts. I grew up eating my way through the offerings at dunkin donuts and kripsy kreme. I’ve also been to gourmet shops like Vodoo donut out in Portland so I’ve had my share of creaive donuts. I tend to shy away from donuts that are just glammed up with sugary toppings like cocoa puffs or fruit loops abd instead gravitate towards the basics like an old fashioned plain and jelly donuts. I am also a sucker for anything with apple or cinnamon so I opted for Rise’s raspberry filled donut and their honey crisp apple fritter.

DSC07366

Raspberry Jelly Donut

I found the raspberry jelly doughnut to be extremely fresh and tastys. It perhaps could have done with a little less powdered sugar on top but it was easy enough to brush off. The raspberry jelly filling was spot on. I’m not sure if they make the jelly in house or get it locally made, but it tasted great. I also like that the donut wasn’t over stuffed with jelly which can sometimes overpower the flavor of the dough in a lesser donut. It had just the right amount of filling making it enjoyable but not messy.

DSC07358

Honey Crisp Apple Fritter

I was won over by the Honey Crisp Apple Fritter as well. I enjoyed the light sugary honey glaze and how I discovered actual chunks of real apples as I pulled  apart the fritter.  Like the jelly donut the fact that it was soft and fresh made the fritter stand out among others I have had elsewhere in the past. I look forward to getting back to Rise soon to try some of their other donut offerings. I would very much like to try their maple bacon bar and chocoloate cake donuts! I read that they have also slowly begun to introduce some gluten free or “nearly” gluten free donut options. Check out their facebook page for more information as their menu evolves.

DSC07341

Take a number!

The crowd at Rise can grow pretty large fairly quickly in the morning rush so I think it is wise that they have employed a “take a number” system. When you first enter you grab a number and wait to be called on to place your order. When I was there the ticket dispenser was up by the counter and donut display case but I hear they have moved it next to the front door so you see it right away and know what to do as you first enter. Either way, they tend to have a lot of people working the kitchen and the counter so even with a crowd things moved along fairly quickly on my visit.

photo (21)

Seating options

The interior is not too big and given the large crowds they regularly draw it isn’t they type of place I would plan on sitting down inside to eat. There is some limited seating along one of the walls inside and several tables outside that can be enjoyed during warmer months. In general it is more of a pick up and go type operation but perhaps the crowds will slim down in the coming months making it possible to sit down and relax inside to eat in the future.

For more information about Rise and to keep updated on their daily menu I suggest you follow them on facebook. Rise is definitely a place worth checking out. If you have been there already please let me know what you think and of course I am open to suggestions about what donut to get from them next!
