Blueberry Pickin’ at Snikroc Farm in Durham!

blue2

I’ve never picked my own blueberries before but have always wanted to do it. Seems like every year I miss my chance (prime blueberry pickin’ in this area is early to mid June). Although it is a little late in the season and despite the oppressive heat we have been experiencing, last Saturday I made a trip to Snikroc farm over in Durham County to get some blueberries. The small family owned Snikroc farm isn’t all that far from where I live in North Raleigh. It is just a short ride up Creedmoor Road and then head west on Highway 98.  Here is a map of their location (Google Maps).

As you enter the property you will pass a small trailer that they use to sell soft serve ice cream on warm summer evenings. Further down the gravel drive is an area to park next to a small shed that has a scale and basic supplies like plastic bags and baskets to use when pickin the blueberries. Upon my initial inspection of some of the plants I confirmed that I was a little late in the season for prime blueberry pickin. I also noticed that the extreme heat we’ve been having has taken a toll on the blueberry plants. However, as I wandered a few rows in, I was able to find some bushes that had some plump albeit small berries ready to be picked!

Above is a quick shot of some of my berries. They are a little smaller than what I am used to buying in the store, but they are packed with flavor.   I think next year I will plan on visitng the farm earlier, like sometime in mid June. I would love to get several pounds next year. On this trip I only managed to pick 1.5 pounds. My small haul didn’t discourage me though, since I love having locally grown fresh blueberries on my cereal in the morning and now I know where to go next year!

Purchasing at Snicrok farm is done on the honor system. Just weigh out your haul and leave your payment at the shed (prices per pound are listed on the wall). For more information check out the Snikroc Farm Facebook Page.

Sola Coffee & Café in North Raleigh

Sola Coffee and Cafe 101

Sola Coffee & Cafe

I love coffee and buying local so it should come as no surprise that I was excited to hear that a new neighborhood coffee shop serving locally roasted Counter Culture Coffee was opening in North Raleigh. Sola Coffee & Café opened its doors a little over four weeks ago and I have been by several times to check it out and try different items from their food and drink menu and think Sola is a fantastic addition to the growing Triangle coffee scene.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 107

Pour-Over Coffee

Sola breathes new life into a re-purposed building that use to be a small bank branch in the Greystone Village on Lead Mine Road (Google map). The interior has been completely transformed into a community oriented space that provides an inviting environment with earth tone colored walls decorated with artwork, and warm and natural lighting. The cafe has ample indoor & outdoor seating perfect for individuals or larger groups. The exterior of the building has a unique look with large river stone masonry along the main entrance wall, while the focal point of the interior is the rustic looking coffee bar built with reclaimed wood from a 107 year old barn.

Indoor Seating

The open atmosphere of Sola makes it a great space to relax or hangout to do work while enjoying your coffee or a bite to eat. I particularly enjoy the natural light that pours into the space from the numerous floor to ceiling windows. I also appreciate the multiple electrical outlets strategically placed in the seating areas and the free WiFi making it easy to use a laptop. The seating options range from stools at the coffee bar and cozy booths to both small & large tables for groups. They even have a nice red couch and comfy chairs by the corner a windows if you are looking for a good spot to spread out and relax with your coffee.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 102

My first cappuccino at Sola!

Speaking of coffee, Sola serves coffee made from some of the best coffee beans around.  They serve locally roasted coffee from Counter Culture Coffee out of Durham and use milk from Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC. They offer coffee by both drip and the pour-over method and feature a full range of espresso and signature drinks and teas. In addition to hot beverages they also serve fruit smoothies and absolutely delicious specialty shake called the “Sola Shake” which is made with espresso and ice cream.

Espresso Machine at Sola

So far I have enjoyed several great cappuccinos and iced lattes at Sola. On my most recent visit it was quite hot out so I had the Sola shake and my wife had a strawberry smoothie. Both of these cool treats were excellent and really hit the spot on such a warm day. The baristas at Sola are very friendly and knowledgeable about the drinks they make and the counter is always well staffed keeping things running smoothly.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 104

Mini Donuts

With regard to the food, if you stop in for breakfast they have everything from breakfast sandwiches to croissants, bagels (from Raleigh’s own New York Bagel), and muffins. Their “soon to be famous” cinnamon mini donuts are my favorite and are available all day and made to order in house. You can get an order by the 1/2 dozen, baker’s dozen, or double dozen. They are served on a small metal tray lined with a paper coffee filter which is a neat idea presentation wise.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 203

Sola’s Mixed Green Salad

Sola also offers various sandwiches and salads that use many locally sourced ingredients. My wife and I recently stopped in on a Friday night for a late dinner and tried a sandwich salad combo together. We started by sharing the Mixed Greens salad with fresh mixed greens, cherry tomato, garbanzo beans, almonds, red onion, cucumbers, parmesan cheese. The dressing homemade from a secret recipe and is amazing! In addition to the salad we had they also offer a Southwest salad and a Spinach Strawberry salad that was just added to the menu.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 204

Sola’s Southwestern Chicken Sandwich

We also ordered the Southwestern Chicken sandwich made with Boar’s Head oven roasted chicken stacked between locally baked bread from the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Raleigh. The sandwich was topped with a generous helping of mixed greens, tomato, red onion, pepper jack, avocado and salsa sour cream spread and served with a side of tortilla chips and homemade salsa. You also have the option to get a side of arugula salad. Additional sandwiches on the menu are the Sola Turkey, Roast Beef, Sola Veggie, Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, and the recently added Pimento Cheese sandwich.

Sola 602

Sola’s Inviting Interior

Another unique aspect about Sola  is that the building has a drive-through window (from its previous use as a bank) and will be in operation later next month to offer service to customers on the go.  Also, in keeping with the re-use theme, the baristas at Sola bag up the used coffee grounds daily and neatly stack the bags by the entrance where customers can grab a bag for free to add to their gardens or compost piles at home.

Sola Coffee and Cafe 304

Outdoor Seating at Sola

On our last visit, my wife and I took advantage of the outdoor seating and enjoyed the nice weather as we sipped our drinks. As we watched the customers come and go stop and greet each other we got a real sense of the strong community vibe of Sola and could tell it has already become a welcome member of the neighborhood. Sola is a great addition to the Triangle coffee culture and I highly recommend you check them out whether it be for a quick cup of coffee or a great bite to eat. I know we are already looking forward to our next visit!

What is a Locopop?

DSC08714

Enjoying my first Locopop outide of Fullsteam in Durham

Locopops are special frozen treats known as “paletas” (Mexican popsicles) made right here in the Triangle by a local business started in Durham by Summer Bicknell back in June 2005.  The frozen pops come in both traditional Mexican flavors, such as mango-chile and tamarind, and quirky ones like honeydew-lavender and chocolate-rosemary. Locopops can be broken down into two groups: dairy based or non-dairy based. In addition to their regular flavors they are constantly introducing weekly “guest stars” (like blueberry buttermilk) available for a limited time only based on the availability of their seasnonal ingredients.

I had my first Locopop last year while attending the a street festival in Durham. I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Locopop street cart set up along Rigsbee Avenue outside of the Fullsteam Brewery. The first pop I had was one of their more traditional falvors (Pomegranate Tangerine). More recently I had a strawberry coconut flovred locopop which was equally fantastic. Locopops are typically sold for around $2 each and the number of places you can buy them continues to grow.

What started out as one small storefront in Durham seven years ago has now grown to three Locopops locations throughout the Triangle. Locopops are also now sold by over two dozen area merchants in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and can even be found in Pittsboro, Cary, & Greensboro! (full list here)

Local Flavor ~ Lumpy’s Ice Cream in Wake Forest!

Lumpy's Ice Cream 110

Lumpy's Ice Cream

Wake Forest just got a whole lot more flavorful.  Lumpy’s Ice Cream has been serving up some of the best locally made ice cream at events around the Triangle since 2001, but this weekend they make the leap to opening up their first brick and mortar location in downtown Wake Forest. Their grand opening celebration is scheduled for this Saturday, March 24, 2012 with an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 11am.

Lumpy's Ice Cream 101

Lumpy's Ice Cream ~ 306 Wait Avenue, Wake Forest, NC

Earlier this week I was lucky enough to be invited to attend a food blogger preview of Lumpy’s to sample some of their flavors and meet with the owner Buck Buchanan. Buck is a great guy who clearly has a passion for what he does and supports the community by using all natural ingredients from local producers to create his ice cream. All of the ice cream at lumpy’s is made using hormone free cream from Maple View Farms in Hillsborough, NC and contain no artificial coloring, flavors, or corn syrup.

Lumpy's Ice Cream 107

Lumpy's Ice Cream

Lumpy’s currently produces over 200 gallons of ice cream a week and makes over 200 different flavors. At any given time they feature 14 different flavors in the case at their shop with 6 or more flavors offered off their mobile cart at events.  One of their operation goals is to maintain a proper balance of production vs. demand so their ice cream is always as fresh as possible.

Of the various flavors I tried on my visit two of my favorites were “Baklava” (with cinnamon, honey, and walnuts) and “Drunken Berry”, a celtic flavor inspired by the Highland Games that features vanilla ice cream with rasberries that have been soaked in 12 year old scotch.  Lumpy’s also offers more traditional flavors including “Sally’s Silly Strawberry”, “Kickin’ Kenny’s Chocolate” and “Bernie’s Butter Pecan” (made with real butter).

Seating Inside Lumpy's

I found that I really enjoyed the unique texture and consistency of Lumpy’s ice cream. It isn’t soft serve, but it also isn’t hard like the typical ice cream you buy at the grocery store. Buck  explained that they strive to serve their ice cream at just below 5 degrees. Once you get over 5 degrees ice cream begins to start melting, but just below that it is the optimum temperature at which the flavors of the ice cream are fully expressed.

In addition to serving ice cream, Lumpy’s future plans include offering hamburgers and hot dogs made from locally sourced beef supplied by Harris Robinette Farms out of Pinetops, NC.  This is a family farm that has been managed by the same family for over 100 years and practices sustainable and environmentally friendly practices to raise 100% grass fed cattle free of hormones and pesticides.  The hamburger and hot dog samples I had were very juicy and  flavorful. The hot dog is not your traditional type of hot dog but more of an Italian sausage made with flavorful spices.

Lump's Ice Cream Pints

In the future Buck  hopes to sell Lumpy’s ice cream through grocery stores throughout the Triangle, but in the meantime you can purchase their ice cream by the pint at the store and find it for sale by the scoop at local restaurants, sporting events, and concert venues (full list of location here). To learn  more about Lumpy’s check out their website or watch this cool Hartford Insurance commercial below that features Lumpy’s story as one of their small business clients.
