Ali Rudel launched the East Durham Pie Company out of her certified kitchen in Durham back in October 2015 and her pies have been a huge hit across the Triangle ever since. You might have come across her delicious pies at businesses around Durham or maybe you’ve seen her at at one of the regular Pop-Up Slice Shops at Ponysaurus Brewing Company every Tuesday evening. I was lucky enough to catch her selling pies at a weekend market in North Raleigh at Sola Coffe a few months ago. I liked the pie so much I made a special trip to Durham a few weeks later to buy some more. I’m not alone. Sometimes the pies sell out within just a few hours at the weekly Pop-Ups.
In order to keep up with growing demand East Durham Pie Company is planning to open a cafe and bakery in the commercial district of Old East Durham. They’ve launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help offset equipment costs and some of the expenses associated with up-fitting the space. Once open the plan is to offer locally roasted coffee, tea, the seasonally-inspired handmade sweet pies, savory meat and veggie pies, breakfast pies, simple salads, soups and other baked goods. Even better, launching the cafe will create more jobs and East Durham Pie Co. is a Durham Living Wage Project certified employer committed to paying their employees a living wage.

Bull City Ciderworks produces delicious modern ciders from locally sourced NC apples. The renovated auto garage they operate out of in Durham has become a popular destination for the public to come try their ciders and enjoy local food trucks on weekends. Unfortunately the ciderworks has hit an unexpected bump in the road. The Durham police department has purchased the property on which they currently reside and they’re forced to relocate their business in order to make way for the new police headquarters.
The timing of this is very unfortunate as the scheduled date they must be out coincides with next seasons apple harvest. In order to keep the cider flowing they must vacate much sooner rather than later and rebuild the cidery from scratch. This is where you can help. Please check out their kickstarter campaign and consider becoming a backer to help support this local business as they make the best of a tough situation and work hard to upfit a great new location in Durham. The founders of the mobile business bikeCOFFEE are looking to raise money to help them launch a brick-and-mortar shop in Durham called Cocoa Cinnamon. This wouln’t be your run of the mill coffee place. Cocoa Cinnamon will be a community space built around coffee, chocolate, spices and teas.
The husband-and-wife team behind the business, Leon Grodski de Barrera and Areli Barrera de Grodski, have launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $20,000. This money will be put towards purchasing equipment and plumbing & electrical work needed for their planned location at 420 Gear Street in downtown Durham around the corner from Fullsteam and Motorco.
