World Beer Festival Returns to Raleigh April 24, 2010

 Aviator Beer

The World Beer Festival returns to Moore Square in downtown Raleigh on April 24, 2010. Tickets go on sale March 16th. The general admission tickets go for $40 plus a small processing fee. The admission gets you an event program, tasting glass, and access to sample literally hundreds of different beers from all over the word, including all of local breweries from right here in the Triangle. There are also special VIP tickets available that run a little higher which give you access to certain beers not made available to the other event attendees. As in the past, the event is broken up into two sessions. The first session (afternoon session) runs from 12-4pm. The second session (evening session) runes from 6-10pm.

Ticket information, a listing of all 250 beer vendors, and details about live music acts scheduled is available on the event website.

If you plan to go this event I highly recommend you plan on getting your tickets as soon as they go on sale. This event has been known to sell out quickly in previous years.  If you wait too long you will find your only option is surfing craig’s list for tickets at inflated prices.

Wine 101 ~ Going For The Gold At The Beer Olympics!

DSC03687

Last night my neighbor and I made the short trip over to the “Beer Olympics” over at my favorite wine store, Wine 101 in Wake Forest. As I described in an earlier post, the event was held in honor of the lighting of the olympic torch kicking off the 2010 winter olympics in Vancouver. The field of competition consisted of a grand total of 30 different beers from six different categories (Hefeweizen, Lagers, Belgians, IPAs, Strong IPAs, and Stouts). Joe, the owner of Wine 101, and his right hand man Jason poured 2 ounce tastes of each bear from unmarked half-gallon growlers. The honorable “ tasting judges” (myself and the 50 other people there) would then score each beer in this blind taste test on a scale of 1-10.  At the end of the night the scores were to be tallied up and gold, silver, and bronze medals would be awarded in each category.

Although I didn’t plan on it, amazingly my friend and I made it through all 30 beers! This was in large part thanks to the dedicated staff at wine 101 who were working very hard to make sure everyone in the large crowd that came to the event had the opportunity to taste every beer. They were also incredibly consistent with their 2 oz. pours which went a long way to make sure you didn’t over do it and wouldn’t get worn out before making it through the catalogue of beers. As we worked our way through the many beers to taste I found that I was a big fan of the Hefeweizen and the Strong IPA’s but was not crazy about the Lagers and regular IPAs. The Jury is still out for me on the Stouts. I don’t think my palate is mature or fascinated enough to recognize a quality stout at this point! That is what year’s of drinking Coor’s Light and Corona will do to you I guess!

The “official” medal scoring is still being tallied and should be posted to their website soon,  but in the meantime I did hear that one of the Hefeweizen I liked was the locally brewed Shotgun Betty from Lone Rider Brewery. I recently had this beer on a visit to the Rialto Theater in downtown Raleigh and think a visit to the brewery is in my future.

My friend and I met some very friendly people throughout the evening as we shared our critiques of each brew and debated which beer we liked best.  As always, whether you’re looking for a bottle of wine for dinner, or just attending one of their wine or beer tasting events Wine 101 is at the top of my list of places to check out. It is not only a great wine shop (which sells great beers too), but Joe and his staff are so friendly and helpful which gives the shop a real social atmosphere with a “neighborhood store” vibe making it a great place to visit to get out and meet new people. For more information about Wine 101 and future events check you can sign up for teir newsletter on their website or follow Joe on twitter.

The Triangle sees its first snow of 2010!

Today the residents of the Triangle woke up to a rare wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.  Some places like North Raleigh only received 3-4″ of snow while parts of Northern Durham and Orange County were blanketed with 6-10″. With all the coverage leading up to the storm, snow shovels and sleds were flying off the shelves at local hardware stores with parents waiting in line for over an hour to purchase them in some cases.  During a quick stroll through the Bedford this morning I saw lots of kids putting those new sleds to good use!

Along with the snow, we seem to have gotten a fair amount of sleet and freezing rain which has managed to pack down into a nice thick sheet of ice on most secondary roads. Given that the temps will remain below freezing for the next couple of days the road conditions will likely not be very good over the remainder of the weekend and may even affect the Monday morning commute. All the more reason to make it a three day weekend in my opinion!

Take A Free Ride On The Downtown Raleigh R-Line Circulator Bus!

If you are headed to downtown Raleigh  be sure to check out the free R-Line Circulator Bus. This free bus service loops around downtown connecting the central business district and its ample parking with the restaurants, bars, and venues along Glenwood Avenue South and the lower portion of downtown by the new Convention Center and Moore Square.

The two bus system runs loops every 15 minutes with multiple stops at points of interest along the way (map). Hours of operation for the service are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. While the stops aren’t very far apart, make sure you know which one is closest to you final destination. The bus will not just stop just anywhere for you (I’ve seen people ask and get denied).

My wife and I took the bus a few times this past summer when we were visiting downtown to attend concerts in Moore Square. It was really easy finding a place to park in the big vacant government building lots along Peace Street and take the quick bus ride down to Moore square were parking can be tight and cost you a few dollars. It is also kind of fun to ride because you essentially are getting a mini-tour of downtown Raleigh and meet other folks who are out for a night on the town.

According to a recent news and observer article the R-line carried over 150,000 passengers between its inception last February 13, 2009 and December 5, 2009.  While it may not be used as often as it could, I think this is a step in the right direction for downtown Raleigh and a sign of more good things to come. I’ll see you on the bus!
