Picture of the Week – Wine Bottle Garden!

photo (27)-001

Wine Bottle Garden!

This week’s picture comes from a backyard garden experiment I am working on. I started a square foot (raised bed) garden a few years ago to avoid having to dig through all the clay soil I have in my backyard in Raleigh. Only problem I had was the wood frame I built around it to hold the soil in started to rot from all the exposure to the elements. So, I decided to get rid of the wood and repurpose empty wine bottles to create a new boarder around my garden. The only problem is I don’t drink that much wine these days!

Fortunately my friends at Vinos Finos y Picadas, a wine & tapas bar in Lafayette Village, had lots of empty bottles they were kind enough to donate for my project. I still need to add a few more bottles to round out the boarder and then plan to add some deer-resistant flowers and ornamental plants. I’ll post a follow up picture later this summer once it is all in full bloom.

Picture of the Week – The Neuse River!

photo (23)

The Neuse River – Taken June 23, 2013

I went for a run along the Upper Neuse River Greenway last night and snapped the picture above right by the parking and canoe launch area. This spot is located just below the dam and the recently opened Falls of Neuse Bridge. Water levels have dropped since the heavy rain last week, but there was still a nice flow to the river. I noticed several people enjoying the river, taking pictures, fishing, and even a few kayaks. I love walking along the Upper Neuse Greenway and enjoying the great waterway. A real gem of North Raleigh!

Picture of the Week – ELF!

DSC08301

This week’s picture was taken while I was over in Carrboro a couple of weeks ago. I spotted this little guy while walking down Weaver Street.  It is called the “ELF”.  The ELF is a One person pedal/solar hybrid commuter vehicle invented by the people at Organic Transit in Durham. They design and build “Organic Transit Vehicles” or OTVs. They are billed as the “perfect solution for people who want to get out of their cars but need or want more than a traditional bike can offer.”

Here is more about the ELF model from the Organic Tranist website:

“The ELF is designed with the busy commuter in mind. The ride height puts you in sight of other drivers while the body is still slim enough to navigate bike trails. There is plenty of room to stash your laptop case and pick up several bags of groceries on the way home. Recharge the removable battery pack by parking your ELF in the sun or by plugging it in to a standard outlet. Upgrade to a more powerful solar panel to stay off grid or add a NuVinci 360 hub to ease your ride.”

Picture of the Week: Yarn Bomb!

photo23

I snapped this week’s picture last Friday while walking back to which was parked by the Oak City Cycling Project on Franklin Street in downtown Raleigh. I had just picked up my race packet for the Krispy Kreme challange at the Krispy Kreme shop on Person Street and caught a glimpse of this sneaky cat out of the corner of my eye. While amusing myself with the cat’s antics I noticed this colorful creation known as a”yarn bomb”.

In case you didn’t know, a “yarn bomb” is a type of street art that uses colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber rather than paint or chalk. You see them most often in downtown urban areas though they sometimes appear on traffic signs out in the suburbs. Either way, I thought it was a nice addition to the streetscape and I plan to keep an eye out for other examples around downtown.

Picture of the Week ~ Beautiful Weekend in Downtown Raleigh!

photo of week

View of Peace Street / Blount Street area of downtown Raleigh

I snapped this week’s photo on Sunday. The weather this past weekend was incredibly warm for this time of year making it the perfect time to explorer downtown Raleigh. Of course the beautiful weekend already feels like a distant memory in light of the dreary cold wet weather we have today. So I like to look at this picture to remind myself that the weather in Triangle is full of surprises and there is always hope for a warmer day to enjoy from time to time even during winter.

The picture above was taken from the Archdale building overlooking the Peace Street & Blount Street intersection of downtown Raleigh. There has been a lot of work going on in that area in recent years with sections being cleared and historic homes being moved to new locations. I hope to take another picture from this perspective a year from now for comparison and see what has changed over the course of a year.
