Picture of the Week – Boulted Bread!

Boulted Bread

Boulted Bread – Coming Soon!

This week’s photo captures a new Triangle bakery is in the works. Boulted Bread is in the process of renovating a site located at 614 W. South Street in downtown Raleigh. This is over by the historic Boylan Heights neighborhood. Note the “Bread” sign on the left. The pictures of their test batches of bread on their facebook page look amazing. I’m really looking forward to their opening and will plan to do a full post once they open for business later this summer. In the meantime you can follow them using the links below for updates and pictures of their great looking bread!

Big Mike’s BBQ at View Bar in Downtown Raleigh

Untitled

The View – Raleigh, NC

I recently attended a media event with a group of my fellow foodie blogger friends to sample some great food from Bike Mike’s BBQ. Big Mike’s started as a food truck and while they still have the mobile aspect of the business, their food can now also be found in its permanent location at View Bar on Glenwood Avenue in downtown Raleigh. This was my first visit to View and I was excited to check out the space and enjoy an evening of great food with friends.

Tasty Chicken & Pork

Big Mike kicked the evening off explaining how we would get a chance to sample some of his signature creations paired with locally brewed beer from Triangle Brewing Co. out of Durham. This was an added bonus as I am a big fan on Triangle Brewing and find they don’t get as much recognition as  they deserve on the local beer scene.

We started the evening off with a healthy serving of chooped chicken and pork (boston butt) that was dry rubbed and smoked. The dish was accompanied by several dipping sauces which ranged from “Crazy Stupid” hot all the way down more mild vinegar based sauces. I am pretty tame when it comes to levels of food hotness so I opted for the weaker sauces. Of course the Habanero Pale Ale paired with the dish had a little bite to it as well making for a great start to a night of excellent eating.

Best Chicken Wings Ever!

Next up were some incredible smoked dry rubbed crispy chicken wings. These babies are flash fried.  This process that keeps the flavor trapped in the meat and makes the wings nice and crispy.  I loved these wings and am already looking forward to going back to get some more. I believe they are offered on the menu for $1 a wing. I could easily make a nice lunch out of 5 or six of these succulent yet crispy wings.

Big Mike’s BBQ “Meatup”

One dish that got a lot of attention was the “Redneck Nachos”. They are comprised of Fritos topped with Eastern NC pulled pork, baked beans, blue cheese coleslaw and a dab of sweet hot mustard. At this point I was already getting full so I dialed things back a notch, enjoyed some more Triangle Beer to wash down the BBQ goodness and snapped a few pictures my friends tearing it up on Instagram.

Another fan favorite of the evening  was beef brisket and collards paired with a Belgian Abbey beer.  The brisket drippings are used to cook the garlic and onions for the collards / kale making for a flavorful side.  I’m usually not a fan of collards but this dish won me over!

Brisket & Fries

From there we sampled some of  Big Mike’s “fatty” fries, served as a bed of steak-cut fries underneath a layer of brisket, pimento cheese, and jalapenos piled high on a plate. Plates like these make eating Big Mike’s fare family style very easy. At this point I was getting really stuffed so I only took a few flavorful bites of the fries and threw in the towel allowing my fellow diners to finish off the plate and rescue me from my food induced coma.

Triangle Brewing IPA

Throughout the evening Doc from Triangle Brewing did a great job introducing the beer pairings he had selected to accompany each of Mike’s dishes. I’m a big fan of their IPA and it remains my solid favorite to enjoy with food.  All in all it was a great night filled with some of the tastiest BBQ I have ever had. I was also very impressed with the vibe of View. It’s a nice space to enjoy some food, have a drink and catch a game on the TV. Now that I have been there I look forward to going back during March Madness to catch a few games while dining on Big Mike’s addictive crispy chicken wings. Who’s hungry?

Picture of the Week – Beer with a View!

Sitti Downtown Raleigh

Beer with a view in Raleigh

After a few brutal weeks of cold and wet weather we finally had a few beautiful days to enjoy this past weekend. My wife and I took advantage of this welcome change in temperature and headed out to explore downtown Raleigh. The picture above was take while enjoying lunch at Sitti, a great Lebanese restaurant. We had  seats located by the windows looking out to activity on the sidewalk and intersection of Hargett & Wilmington Streets. The green building in the background is Holly Aiken’s shop “Stitch” with patrons from Raleigh Times Bar enjoying some rooftop dining.

Arrow Haircuts – Cameron Village

Untitled

I’ve lived in Raleigh for almost nine years now and have found the Triangle to offer almost everything I need. Yet, in all that time calling Raleigh home the one thing that has eluded me is finding a great place to get my hair cut. I am happy to report that my search is over now that I have discovered Arrow Haircuts.

Untitled

Arrow is located in the space formerly occupied by the Professional Barber Shop on Woodburn Avenue in Cameron Village. Owner Pete Phipps openeded Arrow to provide an alternative to the national chains and expensive salons. I like Arrow because they serve both men and women providing an excellent cut by friendly staff for a great price in a modern and friendly environment. As an added bonus patrons can enjoy a free beer and snacks while they wait. Their is even a nice display of locally made products (like White Whale cocktail mixers) to browse. These unique added touches and attention to detail make a trip to Arrow feel like a unique experience and the type of place you would want to visit even if you don’t need a cut.

Untitled

Adding to the community feel, Arrow also holds free special “Arrow University” education events on a monthly basis to bring together people looking to learn “the finer points of being an even better adventurer, connoisseur, and trendsetter. Recent classes included lessons on how fly fish, and tips for the backyard BBQ season. Their next class will be held March 18th at 7:30pm with local sports radio host Joe Ovies. Joe will instruct people on how to fill out brackets for the 1st Annual Arrow March Madness Pool. Winner gets complimentary haircuts for the rest of 2014.

After nine years of bouncing around from place to place trying to get a decent cut I was really happy with the haircut I received at Arrow. I will definitely be a regular there. Arrow offers men’s, women’s and children’s cuts. Prices range from $15 for a men’s buzz cut to $36 for  ladies long cut. My cut was $18 because I went for a regular cut with both buzzers and scissors.  They also offer shampoos for $3, and shaves with a hot towel and straight razor at $25 (I want to try this!).  Discounts are provided to students and those who serve in the military, police and fire departments. I highly recommend you try them for your next cut. If you do visit Arrow be sure to let me know what you think!

RAW: Natural Born Artists “Awakenings” Local Artist Showcase

Raleigh RAW 5

Earlier this month I attended an event organized by Raleigh chapter of RAW:natural born artists. The RAW “Awakenings” event showcased 30 great local indie talents in Raleigh with a fun filled night of art, music and fashion at the Lincoln Theater.

Raleigh RAW 1

RAW’s mission is to provide up-and-coming artists of all creative realms with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity so that they might be seen, heard and loved. RAW events are multi-faceted artistic showcases. Each event features a film screening, musical performance, fashion show, art gallery, performance art and a featured hairstylist and makeup artist. These artists are all local, hand-picked talent who have been chosen to feature at RAW.

Raleigh RAW 3

This was my first visit to the Lincoln Theater and I didn’t know exactly what to expect. I found it to be a great venue for such a cultural event. Artists had their paintings, photos, and handmade jewelry on display throughout the club while models, dancers, and musicians shared their talents from the main stage. The crowd circulated and mingled throughout the club and the upper mezzanaine provided a birds eye view of all the action.

Raleigh RAW 2

I had fun mingling and chatting with many of the artists with work on display. RAW’s work to highlight the creative talent of Raleigh helps provide them with the resources and exposure to provide a creative atmosphere where artists can find opportunities to take their talent to the next level. With such great turnout I think this is a great way for local talent to help get their work and name out there.

Raleigh RAW 4

If you are a local artist looking to join a future Raw showcase submissions are now being accepted for their April 30th SPECTRUM show.  To see additional photos from the February RAW Awakening event check out this great set of photos from the official Raleigh Raw photographer Leigh Moose.
