Beat the Heat – Ice Cream at Turkish Delights in Downtown Raleigh!

DSC05933

The next time you are in Downtown Raleigh and need to cool off, duck into Turkish Delights.  It’s hard too miss this the striking purple house located on the corner Glenwood Avenue.  They serve great ice cream, shakes, and smoothies as well as Turkish pastries like Baklava, Kadafai, and Bourek. You can also grab a coffee or tea if that is more your style.  They have both indoor and outdoor seating.  The outdoor tables have nice umbrellas and are situated  in the front yard which is slightly raised above the sidewalk along Gelnwood Avenue making for a nice view of the activity along the street.

From the looks of the interior, it appears that the business takes up the entire first level of the building. It has a cool eclectic interior with several different seating areas with small tables and chairs and small pillows strewn about. It was really hot out the day my wife and I stopped by so we opted to get something cold.  I got a a scope of caramel cheescake ice cream.  It was very rich and tasted amazing.  My wife got some sort of smoothie which was also very good.

Their offerings are a little on the expensive side ($4.99 for double scoop of ice cream) but the quality makes it more than worth it.  The flavors of ice cream they have range from your typical chocolate and vanilla, to more adventurous flavors like their popular “Garbage Can” ice cream which is made up of vanilla ice cream with pieces of seven different candy bars mixed in!   This place is a unique expereince in downtown and as far as I know it is the only ice cream parlor around Glendwood Avenue.   I’m looking forwad to going back soon and trying some of their baked goods.  There several people buying Baklava when we were there and I’m itching to try some.

Picture of The Week: Carriage Rides in Downtown Raleigh

DSC05961

I took this picture Sunday afternoon in front of the NC Museum of Natural Science.  I’m not sure how much they charge, but you can take a short carriage ride around downtown. They also had a miature pony out in front of the Museum. I sure hope they don’t expect that little guy to cart people around too!

Chubby’s Tacos is Coming to Falls River Towncenter!

DSC05960

It looks like residents of N. Raleigh will have reason to celebrate very soon. Chubby’s Tacos is opening up a fifth triangle location in the Falls River Towncenter located along Durant Road.  This location is within easy walking distance of the Falls River neighborhood and just down the road from Bedford.  Chubby’s will take over the location previously occupied by From NY with Love which sadly has now closed.

This latest addition to the shopping plaza is slated to open by early August. It will be a welcome addition to the area and is sure to be a hit with nearby residents. For more information about Chubby’s check out their facebook fan page. I’ll post a review here once they open.

Durham Food Truck Rodeo – Sunday June 27th from 4-7pm!

DSC02457

A second Durham Food Truck Rodeo is scheduled to take place today Sunday, 6/27 at Durham Central Park, 4-7 p.m.  You can sample some of the amazing traveling food in the Bull City! All in one spot!

This was a huge hit when they had a simialr event at Sam’s Quick Shop earlier this month. Don’t confuse these with the old “Grease Trucks” that usually come to mind when most peopel think of mobile food vendors. Most of the owners of these mobile businesses have extensive experience in the culinary arts and are highly regarded for the food they serve.  I’m hoping I can sneak over there for a bit to eat later today! You can read more about some of the mobile vendors in a recent Independent Weekly article. (Link)

See you at the Rodeo!
