Electric Beanz Coffee Bar – More Than Just Great Coffee!

I’m always on the lookout for places that have great coffee and free live music and I prefer to support local businesses whenever possible.  With that in mind, my wife and I headed out Friday night to check out the Electric Beanz Coffee Bar located in Raleigh next to the Harris Teeter in the Kings Grant shopping center at the intersection of Ten-Ten Road and 401.

As soon as we arrived I knew we had found what we were looking for. The shop has an inviting vibe which was complimented that night by the presence of a four piece band tucked away in the back corner playing mellow jazz tunes.  My wife and I ordered our drinks and chatted with the friendly owner who explained their weekly specials and upcoming events.

The coffee bar offers everything from your regular cup of coffee to fancy cappuccinos and lattes. They also serve fruit smoothies made with real fruit. On this occasion I had my favorite, a mocha, and my wife had a decaf latte, both of which were excellent. We both like that they use organic fair trade coffee from local roaster right here in Raleigh and only use hormone free organic milk.

While the coffee takes center stage, Electric Beanz also features some tasty looking baked goods from some of the best local bakeries. They have traditional and gluten free cheesecakes from Miss Taffy’s Cheesecakes in Apex and other baked treats like muffins, danishes, and scones from both Heavenly Scents Bakery and Sweet Jane’s Bakery. They also offer a little South American flare with spinach and feta empanadas from Espiga Bakery in Raleigh.

While there, we learned that Electric Beanz is a regular participant in a local event called “Art after Dark” where on the second Friday of each month they feature the work of local artists and have live jazz music performed by the Dave Reitmeyer and his Jazz Band. This month’s featured artist is Jo Cicci. She was on hand Friday night exhibiting her work and doing a little painting right there in the coffee shop.  Several of her pieces will be on display in the shop for the rest of the month .

My favorite piece was an acrylic canvas painting of red shutters opening out to a lush green landscape. It gave me the impression I was looking through the painting to the outside world as if through a window. I couldn’t help but think how something like that would brighten my dreary windowless office!

What I really liked about this coffee bar is that it has a “neighborhood place” kind of feel you get from a business that has strong ties with the surrounding community. Of course the offer free wi-fi access and you can spot the occassional game of chess bing played, but the also support the local art and music scene which is a rare thing these days. In addition to the Art after Dark events, Electric Beanz features other local musicians on a regular basis, holds poetry readings, and even offers teen open mic nights for budding musicians.  Electric Beanz is also a popular networking location and serves as one of  the sites for Inside 919’s weekly Tuesday morning “coffee break” networking meet-ups.

I’m really glad we discovered this neighborhood coffee bar and I look forward to visiting it again in the future.  To get more information about their upcoming events check out the calendar on their facebook page or you can follow them on twitter.  To view the rest of the photos from my visit, please check out my flickr photo album.

Picture of the Week – “Plant a Row” event at Logan’s Trading Co.

DSC04198

This week’s picture was taken at the “Plant A Row” event at Logan’s Trading Company on Saturday. Mayor Meeker and the radio hosts from the “Weekend Gardener” show, Mike Raley and Anne Clapp, were on hand to help kick things off.

“Plant a Row” is an movement to encourage gardeners to plant an extra row of produce each year and donate their surplus to local food banks, soup kitchens and service organizations to help feed America’s hungry. The people at Logan’s were encouraging people to participate by providing a free bag of compost and a packet of seeds. You can still swing by this weekend to pick up your starter kit while supplies last. Then when you have some veggies to donate swing back by Logan’s to drop off your donation for the Interfaith Food Shuttle to pick up.

You can read more about Plant a Row for the Hungry here.

Wine Tasting at the Twisted Vine in Wake Forest

Twisted Vine 2

My wife and I love to discover new places to try wine. Whether it is going on trips to vineyards or simply finding a cool local wine shop that holds tasting on the weekends. If they have wine, we want to check it out.  Two weeks ago we were in downtown Wake Forest on a Saturday afternoon and we stopped by a little place called Twisted Vine.  It is located on the second floor of an old brick building on White Street adjacent to the area where the farmers’ market is held in the spring and summer.  The neat thing about the building it is in is that there is  also a nice little coffee shop on the first floor. To get to the Twisted Vine you actually need to enter the coffee shop first and then go up stairs to enter the wine shop.

The wine shop has a nice little selection of wines at a range of prices and offers free wine tasting on Saturdays from 12-4.  They were tasting four wines the day we stopped in. One was from NC and the remaining three were from Spain. The striking thing about this place is its ambiance. It has exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors, and wine barrel tables set up by windows overlooking white street. I’m pretty sure they serve wine by the glass and on occasion even have music. They also feature art from local artists and photographers. This is hidden gem in Wake Forest. It’s quiet atmosphere and historic surroundings makes this another one of those places that allows you to relax  feel  worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the modern-day Triangle!

Twisted Vine 4

For more information about Twisted Vine and their scheduled tasting events check out their website. And don’t forget that every second Friday is “Art After Hours” where you can discover the Arts in Downtown Wake Forest! This monthly event runs 5-9pm on the second Friday of each month and many of the local businesses like Twisted Vine stay open late for this event and feature artist openings, receptions and live music.

Picture of the Week – Art in the Park

DSC04031

This week’s picture comes from my weekend jaunt to Chapel Hill to take a walk along the Bolin Creek Greenway Trail. There is a nice little park at the entrance to the greenway complete with art and a large rose garden. I found this statue particularly interesting! I should have a post with more pictures from the greenway trail later up this week.

As always, if you would like to submit a picture for consideration please email me at triangleexplorer@gmail.com

Discover Caffé Driade in Chapel Hill – A Coffee Lover’s Dream

Caffe Driade 1

On Sunday my wife and I made the most of the beautiful weekend weather by taking a trip over to Chapel Hill. The highlight of our day was a visit to Caffé Driade for a relaxing cup of coffee. The café is tucked away in a private woody setting just off of E. Franklin Street and is probably the most unique place to enjoy coffee in the Triangle and is widely regarded as having some of the most skilled baristas around. In addition to their drink menu, which also includes beer and wine, they feature fresh baked goods from the Guglhupf Bakery in Durham.

The quirky looking exterior of the café resembles something you might expect to find in the desert of Arizona. The interior is small with a cool funky ambiance and includes a few tables tucked away by the coffee bar. There are also a few tables inside a temporary enclosure as you enter from the front porch area. I believe they take the enclosure down after the winter months. Seating outside is spectacular and plentiful with both a front and rear patio surrounded by a garden area and woods with additional seating set down amongst the trees behind the café. My wife and I sat on the back patio overlooking the trees that lead down to the Bolin Creek greenway trail. I had delicious a large frothy mocha while my wife enjoyed one of their hot teas.

The café cleary has a strong following and can be quite busy at times.  The gravel parking lot was almost completely full when we arrived. For a minute I was actually thinking we weren’t going to find a place to park, but they have additional parking in a lot next door. Like most coffee shops there are plenty of people working on their laptops. I read online somewhere that with wifi access is not free there, but I don’t know for sure you may want to look into that before heading over there if that is an issue. It looked like a pet friendly place as I noticed a few dogs relaxing on the patio.  I understand that occasionally they have music performances or DJs at night on the weekends.

I think the combination of skilled baristas, quirky ambiance, and natural outdoor setting is what keeps people coming back to Caffé Driade. While my wife and I sat on the patio we really felt like we were a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Triangle. I noticed they had strands of Christmas lights strung across the trees above the patio and think it would be neat to come back on a summer night to have a glass of wine under the patio lights while listening to some live music. I’m looking forward to our next visit!
