Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Race 13.1 Durham Half Marathon Race Recap

oimg_20161210_133504

I’ve never run a half marathon this late in the year, so when I signed up for the Race 13.1 in Durham, a December race, I knew I was likely looking at a cold run. The morning of the race it was a crisp 22 degrees. When I arrived there were about people near the starting line listening to a DJ Pdogg and doing warm ups lead by an instructor from O2 fitness. It was certainly a cold morning, but I liked the positive energy. I even saw Santa in the mix taking time to pose for pictures with runners.  Just before the start I scanned the crowd it looked like a nice showing of runners. Ultimately I think the cold may have kept a few runners at home that day, but according to the final results there were roughly 870 half marathon runners, 276 10k runners and 150 5K runners.

The race started from the North Gate Shopping Mall off of Guess Road a little north of Downtown Durham. The course itself winded through a combination of streets bordering Duke’s East Campus and some extended jaunts along the Ellerbe Creek Greenway. I didn’t have a time goal in mind for this race. I just really wanted to enjoy the experience. Ultimately I decided to stick with the two hour pace group as I figured that would be a good steady pace I could realistically maintain and enjoy the run while at the same time making me working hard enough to work up a good sweat and keep my body warm.

The pace group I hitched up with was great and they kept us right at the 9:08 minute per mile pace the entire time. I was surprised as the race wore on that I was in fact quite comfortable with the temperature. It was actually so cold that at a few of the aid stations the water had begun to freeze. It never really got above freezing and I was expecting to be cold, but had dressed just right and felt great that morning. After the second mile we jumped on to the Ellerbe Creek trail and I settled in for the long run and took in the natural surroundings.

The out and back on the trail went by quickly and before I knew it we were already at the 7 mile marker making our way back to the streets of Durham. A word of caution, all races in Durham involve hills, and this race is no different. The final 3 miles of the race includes a nice little loop through one particular Durham neighborhood that felt like it had a hill at each turn. I enjoyed the challenge, and honestly they aren’t big hills. Just don’t expect a flat as a pancake course. Once that was behind us the final stretch of the race lead us down Guess Road and to a final lap around the mall to the finish line.

At the finish runners received their medals and were rewarded with a post race celebration that included free beer from local brewery Ponysaurus Brewing and food from Sassool Mediterranean Café. At the finish I caught up with my friend Eric who had just completed his very first Half Marathon. He certainly picked a cold day to do it, but had a great time and was all smiles at the finish!

I think that Race 13.1 Durham did a fine job for a race only in  its second year. I think with a few tweaks to the course (maybe a few more miles on the streets of Durham vs. Greenway) and little more support along the route this could easily become another premier race in the Triangle and a fun holiday running tradition.

The next Race 13.1 Half Marathon will take place in Wilmington om February 19th. They will also be back in Raleigh holding a race on June 3rd. If you want to get a jump start on your 2017 race goals you can save $10 on your next Race 13.1 event with code Race2017  through January 2!  Visit their website here to check out all of the 2017 races that are open for registration so far. Arrow Haircuts Ridgewood Shopping Center Location Now Open

arrow1b

When Arrow Haircuts opened their first location in Cameron Village back in 2014 it quickly became my favorite place to get a cut. I mean where else can you get a great haircut and enjoy a beer while you wait? Fast forward two years and Arrow now has second location on Hargett Street, a shop on 9th Street in Durham, and just last week opened their third Raleigh location in the Ridgewood Shopping Center (by the Whole Foods on Wade Avenue).

They don’t take appointment over the phone but booking online is super fast and easy. You’ll want to get to the shop a few minutes before your appointment to check out some of the gear they have on display. Arrow carries some great products like White Whale cocktail mixers and locally roasted Raleigh Coffee Company coffee and Videri Chocolate. I recommend checking them out this week if you are looking for a haircut gift card or last minute stocking stuffers. You can read more about Arrow and book an appointment at one of their four Triangle locations on their website http://guaranteedshorterhair.com.

Back Alley Coffee in Wake Forest – Now Serving Espresso Drinks!

Back Alley Coffee Roasters ~ Wake Forest, NC

Back Alley Coffee Roasters is located in downtown Wake Forest on Brooks Street. It’s just around the corner from White Street Brewing. They are a local micro-roaster that also operates two coffee shops. Their flagship shop is located along with their roasting operation on Brooks street. Their second shop is in the Ledford Student Center on the Southeastern campus. Both locations started out serving pour over coffees, nitro cold brew and teas, but have recently added espresso drinks to the menu.

I stopped by the Brooks Street location last Saturday to try their espresso and had a fantastic latte. I also noticed that they have added some baked goods to their menu (supplied by local baker Strong Arm Baking). If you are looking for some great locally roasted coffee to give as a gift this holiday, or just want to check out a great new coffee shop highly recommend paying Back Alley a visit. Make sure you try their Nitro Cold Brew. It’s some of the best I have ever had!

The Grinch Brings the Holiday Spirit to DPAC

full-cast-wreath2

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is now at the DAPC with performances through this Sunday. If you’re like me your first introduction to Whoville and the miserly Grinch was probably from the 1966 cartoon. Most you probably know the story, but just in case this is the tale of a grumpy old Grinch who lives in cave up on mountain overlooking Whoville.  He has a heart two sizes to small and seeks to destroy Christmas, a holiday the residents of Whoville adore. Of course as the story plays out, the Grinch is redeemed and finds himself getting swept up in the holiday spirit and finds the true meaning of Christmas and his place among the Whos.

The theatrical production is features wonderful sets designed by John Lee Beatty and costumes designed by Robert Morgan, inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original book, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story. It was wonderful to see the storybook come to life on the stage, the sets and the costumes look like they jumped right from the pages of the book and the colors pop on stage.

The cast is just perfect. Philip Bryan dazzles as the green hairy Grinch. He plays the character in a delightful sarcastic way that has the audiences laughing and cheering for him while secretly yearning for him to find redemption. Danielle Guilbot is equally wonderful as the precious Cindy-Lou Who, with a voice beyond her years and does a fantastic job singing in several numbers. The supporting cast playing the residents of Whoville are spot on playing their parts and bring strong vocal performances as well.

One addition to the telling of the story you will notice is the use of a narrator, which I thought worked really well for the production. Bob Lauder is great as “Old Max,” an older version of the Grinch’s dog and serves as narrator of the story. You are first introduced to him at the start of the show where he is seemingly on his way to heaven when he overhears the Whos signing in the town down below and is reminded of the events of that fateful Christmas Eve long ago. It’s fun to see Old Max reliving those moments as he recalls the story of the Grinch’s diabolical plan and the joy of his ultimate redemption. There are also some cute interactions between Old Max and his younger self.

A few things to know before heading to the show. It runs about 90 minutes long which I found to be just the right amount of time to keep the attention of the younger audience members. Also, there is no intermission, which I also thought was a good idea to keep the story moving and allowing the evening show to end just a little past 9pm. I don’t want to give to much away but there is one particular number that involves a little audience participation which I thought was a very nice touch to the show.

Seeing the Grinch at the DPAC was just what I needed to kickoff the holiday season and get me into the Christmas Spirit. I hope it returns again next year as I can see it becoming an annual tradition for Triangle families. There is still time to catch the show this weekend with shows on both Saturday and Sunday.

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical plays at the Durham Performing Arts Center Tuesday, November 29th through Sunday December 4th. For more information and to order tickets visit https://www.dpacnc.com/events/detail/the-grinch.
