The Beaver Queen Pageant is one of Durham’s marquee events and is rich in the history and culture of the community. Started in 2005 by members of the Duke Park neighborhood in order to protect beavers from a potentially harmful road construction project; it has grown into a large scale event that attracts hundreds of people from all over the Triangle who are interested in protecting wetlands and want to give a helping hand to beavers. It is a free, family-friendly beaver ‘beauty pageant’ that is a creative outlet for both the contestants and the audience.

As with every pageant there are the gowns, the interview, and the talent shows- no swim suits since all beavers are slippery swimmers! The judges are anything but impartial as the audience ‘bribes’ them to support the performer they like the best, adding to the entertainment value of the event. WUNC’s Frank Stasio will serve as emcee for the third straight year.

This annual event in Duke Park is a hit with kids of all ages due to the outrageous costumes and audience engagement. More than just being fun, it honors diversity, supports community, promotes creativity, and adds to the uniqueness of Durham. Food trucks on site will include Only Burger, Sympathy for the Deli, Pie Pushers, and The Parlour. There will also be a Locopops cart and a Scrap Exchange booth where people of all ages can make their own beaver tails!

The purpose of the spectacle is to raise awareness of our community’s waterways and pockets of nature, and to raise money to help protect and restore these precious resources for all to enjoy. The Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA) is grateful for the support it has received from the Pageant over the years.

ECWA encourages community involvement with Ellerbe Creek and the land alongside it, through workdays, nature hikes, and outreach into schools and neighborhoods that border the creek. Long-term goals for the organization include creating an interconnected network of trails and nature preserves linking downtown to Falls Lake, restoring water quality and habitat in Ellerbe Creek, and creating spaces for people in the community to enjoy.

Belgian Waffology Food Truck

Untitled

Thanks to a tip from my friend Art over at The Wandering Sheppard I recently caught up with a new food truck I have been looking forward to experiencing for quite some time. Now this is no ordinary food truck. This is the Triangle’s very own waffle truck called Belgian Waffology. It is operated by owner François Kerckhof of Belgium and features both sweet and savory Belgian waffles! If the crowd around this truck last week is any indication, I’d say it is a huge hit!

Now, a little about the waffles. Liege waffles are waffles made from a dough containing pearl sugar. This waffle is thicker, heavier and chewy. Brussels waffles are what most people think of when they think of a Belgian waffle. They are made from a batter and are typically light, crusty, golden and rectangular.

Toppings offered for both range from fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream to nutella, bananas, cinnamon, and honey. There are also savory options like goat cheese, walnuts, apples, tomatoes and mozzarella. I am a huge fan of liege waffles so I tried one of those with fresh strawberries. I loved the crispy outside and chewy inside. Absolutely perfect.

Francois and his crew make all the waffles from scratch on the truck using waffle irons from Belgium. A plain waffle (a treat in itself) runs $4. Prices range up to $8 depending on the various sweet and savory topping combos. You can also grab a drink to wash the waffle down including coffee roasted right here in the Triangle from Carrboro Coffee.

To keep tabs on where the waffle truck will be next (the truck’s name is “Freddy” by the way) check out the schedule on belgianwaffology.com. You can also follow the truck on twitter to get updates on their daily location. If you plan to be in town the Memorial Day weekend you can find the waffle truck at Deep River Brewery in Clayton this Sunday 5/25 from 1-6pm. Belgian Waffles and local NC beer sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday!
