Bull City Burger & Brewery in Durham – A “Must Go” for Burger Lovers!

Bull City Burger & Brewery 508

If you are looking for one of the best burgers in the Triangle then you need to get yourself over to Bull City Burger and Brewery (BCBB) located at 107 Parrish Street in Downtown Durham (Map). BCBB has been open a little over a year but for some crazy reason I have only recently had the opportunity to eat there. Actually, these photos are from my visit back in April for my Birthday. I’ve been back since and have been meaning to post this review for some time but one thing lead to another and I am only now getting around to sharing my thoughts on this great place.

Bull City Burger & Brewery 505

BCBB serves lunch and dinner seven days a week and offers ample seating with approximately 90 seats inside in addition to 50 seats of outside patio dining. The interior has an old fashioned looking stamped tin ceiling, with warm LED lighting, and natural light spilling in from large front windows providing a great view of the sidewalk of Parrish Street. The dining area features open seating with communal style picnic tables made of reclaimed wood. Or if you prefer, you can grab a stool at the bar and order / eat your food there. I enjoyed sitting at the bar. It has a large mirror along the length of the bar wall behind the taps and glasses providing a great view dining room and steel fermenters in the brewery situated behind you while sitting at the bar.

Bull City Burger & Brewery 503

BCBB is not your run of the mill burger joint.  The food served there is high quality – from the burgers all the way down to the toppings.  The restaurant can be best described as “farm-to-fork,” as they work closely with local pasture raised beef farmers supplying beef with no hormones added and antibiotic-free meat. This is a HUGE plus in my book. It is important to me that not only do the burgers taste amazing, but that I know where my food is coming from and what it has and doesn’t have in it. These burgers are locally sourced and made of high quality beef. The beef is grinded daily to make their hamburgers and all-beef hotdogs.  BCBB also works with other local farmers growing produce to be used in their burger toppings, such as tomatoes, cucumbers for pickles, and lettuce.  In fact, most of the items on the menu are produced on-site including the house made buns, sauerkraut and bacon.   They do not use artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, or hydrogenated oils.

Bull City Burger & Brewery 510

With all the great offerings on the menu, I have to admit I am pretty traditional when it comes to what I want on a burger. I just want quality beef, cheese and some pickles along with mustard and ketchup all situated on a fantastic bun. In addition to the traditional burgers offered, BCBB also has an extensive specialty burger menu for those looking for something extra special. Like the The Over Easy with bacon and fried egg, and the Green Monster with Gruyere Cheese, Raw Onion and Roasted Poblano Peppers.  They also serve all beef, hotdogs, chili, and a non-meat three bean burger. Their fries are equally amazing and come two different ways. You can get “dirty” fries done in peanut oil, or “duck frites” made using duck fat and fresh rosemary. Both are amazing! You can view the full menu here.

Bull City Burger & Brewery 501

BCBB is also a working brewery and they brew their own beer. They usually have eight beers on-tap at any given time rotating seasonally throughout the year. Beer is available by the pint, pitcher, sampler and Tower of Beer Power in the restaurant, as well as to take home in growlers and kegs. I love the idea of samplers when it comes to beer. This allows you to try three or more different beers in small four once pours for $1.35 per sample. On my visit back in April I selected four beers to sample: Bryant Bridge Gateway Golden Ale, Full Frame “Reel” Amber Ale, Parrish Street Pale Ale, and the “Stonewall” Jackson Brown Ale. I was very pleased with all of the beers I tried and think BCBB doesn’t get as much attention as they deserve regarding their well crafted brews. It is my opinion that they are some of the best beers made right here in the Triangle.

The is beer is indeed awesome, but the folks at BCBB take wine seriously too and feature a great selection of estate grown wines from around the world, which are served on-tap via the Enomantic self serve wine dispensing machine.

Bull City Burger & Brewery 514

So, while it has taken me a while to share my thoughts on BCBB, let me close by saying this is place is a “must go” on any foodies list. It is a double whammy offering the best in locally sourced burgers and some of the best beer made in the Triangle.  You can read more about Bull City Burger and Brewery on their website or follow them on facebook and twitter for updates to their menu and details about future events.

The Bar at Bull Coty Burger & Brewery

Sadly, I have yet to eat one of their burgers but I hear they are fantastic. They use locally sourced meat that is hormone and antibiotic free. They also brew their own beer onsite and serve up some incredible “dirty” fries. I stopped in Bull City to sample some of their beers (pictured above). You can sample 3 or more of their beers for just $1 each and full pints are only $4.22.

Seating at Bull City Burger & Brewery

Seasting consists of chairs at the bar and large community tables on the main floor where groups can sit together. You place your order at the counter and are given a number to display on your table and a server will bring you your food. Bull City Burger has been well received by the burger loving crowd and plays a strong role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Durham. Cafe’ Prost of Wake Forest: German Pretzels Arrive in The Triangle!

DSC02046

Cafe Prost Gourmet Pretzel Truck out of Wake Forest

I’ve been following this Cafe Prost for some time now and happy to see they are now out on the Streets of the Triangle on a regualr basis adding to the local foodie scene!  Their truck is based out of Wake Forest and serves up the most incredible German pretzels I’ve ever had. They keep it simple by focusing on gourmet German pretzels but also offer some amazing oatmeal walnut raisin cookies and fresh brewed coffee as well.

DSC02042

Today's Menu

Last week I caught up with the Cafe Prost truck while it was parked at the Star Mart Service Station at 818 South Main Street in Wake Forest across the street from the blue Aqaurium Outfitters building (Link to Map). You can typically find the truck parked in this spot Wednesday through Friday from 8am to noon throughout the month of February. On Saturdays they are usually set up across the street from the Durham Farmers’ Market and they are starting to make regular appearances at Fullsteam Brewery.

Pesto Romano Pretzel from Cafe Prost

When I stopped by their truck last week in Wake Forest they were offering three kinds of pretzels: traditional Swabian-German pretzels topped with sea salt, pesto romano pretzels, and jalapeno provolone pretzels.  They were just pulling a tray of freshly bakes pesto roman and jalapeno provolone pretzels out of the oven when I arrived so I bought one of each and a coffee. The pretzels were amazing!  The pretzels are soft and fluffy on the inside with warm toasted exterior that provides a synergistic texture on your tounge.

Jalapeno Provolone Pretzel from Cafe Prost

The pesto romano pretzel was my favorite with just the right balance of herb and cheese. I would have never thought of adding peppers as a topping to a pretzle, but I found the jalapeno provolone pretzel to be delicious as well. The jalapeno was not too hot and went incredibly well with the toasted cheese to compliment the pretzel.  Both pretzels were so flavorful I found I didn’t even need mustard (which I love) and instead enjoyed them both “as is”. I would recommend trying both of these pretzels and look forward to having more of them and other pretzle offerings from Cafe Prost in the future.

Cafe Prost

Cafe Prost accepts both cash and credit cards as methods of payment.  To keep posted on where they will be each week you can follow them on twitter @cafeprost.  If you are interested in having Cafe Prost park their pretzel truck at your place of business or special event or buying their pretzels for resale you can contact them through their website for more information. I think they  would make a great addition to the food truck rotation at both Fullsteam and Big Boss brewery as well as the soon to open White Street Brewery in Wake Forest. I mean who out there doesn’t like warm soft pretzels and beer?

LoneRider Brewing Company – Beer So Good It Should Be Outlawed!

Lone Rider 1

Ok, I know I have had a lot of posts about beer lately and this blog really isn’t all about beer, but I finally got over to the LoneRider Brewing Co. with a friend of mine this past Saturday and want to share my thoughts.  I have no idea why it has taken me this long to check out such a cool place.  Afterall, it did open up well over a year ago right here in Raleigh and  is not all that far from where I live. The Brewery itself is situated in a warehouse located just off of Westgate Boulevard near where I-540 connects with Glenwood Avenue in the vicinity of Brier Creek.

The story behind LoneRider is inspiring. The three owners are friends who connected through their shared interest in home brewing. Each works an 8-5  job yet they somehow found the time to pursue their dream of opening and running a great local brewery.  I met one of the owners, Steve, on my visit and enjoyed learning about the brewery’s history. Steve and the other staff at LoneRider were very friendly and gracious in answering my various newbie beer questions. I left there knowing a whole lot more about how good beer is made than before I had entered their “Hideout”.

DSC03775

LoneRider holds brewery tours on alternating Fridays and Saturdays and also have a tasting room that is open Thursday-Saturday (check their website for tour info and tasting room hours). I haven’t been on a tour yet, but I hear they can draw quite crowd.  The tasting room is fantastic in its simplicity. It is comprised of an inviting little bar with taps for all of their beers and in what appears to be the loading bay for the brewery complete with a loading dock door opening to the parking lot giving the tasting bar a “drop in and say hello” feel.

While my friend and I sat at the bar drinking our pints I was intrigued by the number of people who dropped by to get their “growlers” filled up. One guy even drove up in his Harley and pulled two empty growlers out of the saddle bags on his bike. In addtion to the regualr draught beers, they also offer their beer on a “Nitro Tap” meaning the beer is served using compressed nitrogen instead of CO2 . Apparently this gives the beer a different texture and tast. I didn’t try that on this visit but may experiment with it on a future visit.

DSC03776

When we stopped by they had their Shotgun Betty (hefeweizen), Peacemaker (pale ale), and Deadeye Jack (porter) on tap. They also have a tap for Sweet Josie Brown, their brown ale, but they were out of it on my visit but should have more within the next day or two.  I am very new to the beer tasting scene and don’t pretend to have a sophistacted palate so take my comment on the beers with that in mind! That being said, I found the Shotgun Betty to be a very tasty wheat beer. It had that nice orange cloudy look of a hefeweizen but a unique somewhat sweet flavor with a hint of banana and citrus. My friend tried their Porter which had the classic rich dark look and a taste dominated by coffee and roasted chocolate.

My friend and I both had a couple of pints of the Peacemaker Pale Ale and agreed it was extremely good. As I sit here writing this, I can’t quite find the words to describe it. It was very different from anything I’ve ever had before. I guess I will just have to go back and try it again to develop an adequate review! Let’s just say it was one of the best beers I have had in a while!

DSC03773

In the end, off the three beers I tried, my favorite is the Peacemaker pale ale with Shotgun Betty coming in as a close second. I’m sure my appreciation of the Dead Eye Jack will grow as my beer palate matures.  It certainly seemed popular with the other people there that day! In addition to getting a pint at the bar for a very reasonable $3 or filling up a growler ($13 for a new one, $9 for a refill) they now sell six-packs if Shotgun Betty and Deadeye Jack. Word has it that in addition to picking up a six pack at the brewery, you should now be able to find six-packs in the local Harris Teeters and Whole Foods. I know they are already carrying it at Taylor’s BP in North Raleigh.

You can also find LoneRider Beers on tap at various bars and restaurants around the Triangle (around 80 so far) including places like The Pit, The Flying Saucer, and Brixx Pizza.  As I mentioned in my previous post about the Rialto, the Theater now offers Shotgun Betty as one of the beers you can enjoy while catching a movie.

DSC03778

LoneRider also holds  a cool annual event called “Brew it Forward” where local home brewers compete to have their beer selected to be brewed at Lone Rider for a limited time. I think last year’s winner was a Pilsner that is due to be ready later next month.  There were around 85 homebrews submitted for consideration in 2009 so I’m sure the 2010 competition will be fierce.  This year’s Brew it Forward event is scheduled for March 27th. For more info about the event and instrcutions on how to submit a beer to be juedged  check out the event website.

From top to bottom LoneRider is a great addition to Raleigh and the local beer scene.  Not only do they make some great beers there, but their tasting room is a unique and fun place to visit and I look forward to stopping by there as often as I can. For more information about the guys behind LoneRider and the inspiration behind starting their own brewery check out this article from Know Your Brewer.
