Picture of the Week: Salisbury Street Pedestrian Bridge

Untitled

This week’s picture is a familiar sight for me. It is the pedestrian bridge that links the government buildings of Halifax Mall to a parking garage located across Salisbury Street in downtown Raleigh. The newly renovated bridge has an interesting modern style and look. It even has small speakers installed the periodically play recordings of bird calls that sound more like howler monkeys. I’ve been told the sounds are used to scare away real birds from perching on the bridge. On the night I snapped this picture the sky was displaying a colorful sunset as I made the short journey to my car.

The Scariest Halloween House in Raleigh!

Untitled

Halloween is here and one of the best places to visit to see some scary decorations is located in the Historic Oakwood neighborhood of downtown Raleigh. There is a nice background story by the N&O from 2013 about the owner, Jesse Jones, and his inspiration for the the haunted house.

You can find the house on the corner of Oakwood Avenue and East Street. It’s fun to stop by during the day to check out all the detail, but I hear it is even cooler at night when it is lit up. There are even a few motion sensored gadgets that are sure to give you a scare. Apparently a zombie or two are known to show up on Halloween night and pose for pictures with onlookers. Here is a map to the exact location of the house. Happy Halloween!

Places to Get Pumpkins Around The Triangle

pumpkin1

It is finally October and once again I am on the prowl to find the perfect pumpkin!  There are several different local farms where you can go right to the patch and pick your own.  A few of my local favorites include Page Farms in Raleigh,  Ganyard Hill Farm in Durham, Green Acres Farm in Cary, DJ’s Berry Patch in Apex, and Vollmer Farm in Franklin County.  There are many other great farms in the area as well. If you have any specific suggestions feel free to share them in the comments section.

You can also pick up a great pumpkin at the Raleigh Farmer’s market (pictured above).   They have a wide variety of sizes and shapes and even sell white pumpkins!  A pumpkin decorating contest will be held at the market on Thursday October 9th with cash prizes for the best decorated pumpkin in each age group. Check out the Farmers’ Market website or download the contest announcement here for details on how to enter.

Picture of the Week: Big Boss Brewery!

Untitled

This week’s photo captures my three favorite things about hanging out at Big Boss Brewery in Raleigh. Great beer, good people, and food trucks! I like to run with the Big Boss Run Club each Tuesday at 7pm. After my three mile run it’s great to hangout with fellow runners at the brewery and enjoy a pint. My current favorite Big Boss selection is the High Roller IPA. On Tuesdays the Deli-icious Food truck is usually on hand with healthy sandwiches and sides including several vegetarian options. Whether you are training for an upcoming race or just looking to get some exercise and meet new people, Tuesday nights at Big Boss are a great way to get started.

Local Bloggers Take Over Not Just Icing Cupcake Truck at Big Boss Brewery August 5th!

Not Just Icing Cupcakes

Watch out Raleigh! This Tuesday, August 5th I’ll be working alongside local food truck blogger Art aka The Wandering Sheppard on the Not Just Icing cupcake food truck at Big Boss Brewing Company (249 Wicker Drive, Raleigh). The truck will be at the brewery from 5-8pm and we will be baking/selling several different flavors of cupcakes. That’s right, the cupcakes are made right on the truck! This will not only be a lot of fun since it will be my first time working on a food truck, but it will also help raise money for a great local cause. Not Just Icing will donate one dollar for every four pack of cupcakes sold and all tips Art & I earn that night will be donated to Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. So come on out and put us to work! Buy a cupcake or two and stick around for the Big Boss Run Club – the club meets at 7pm and runners of all levels are welcome.
