Weekend Picks: March 20-22nd

New Section of Neuse River Greenway

This weekend looks to be a little cooler than this past Monday and Tuesday, but there are still plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the day. Here are a few quick picks of things to check out the weekend. Happy exploring!

Thursday March 19th

Pharmacy Bottle + Beverage Grand Opening
Downtown Cary has a new craft beer bottle shop! Pharmacy Bottle + Beverage opens Thursday March 19th at noon. It is located downtown Cary at 120 E. Friday March 20th

Free Coffee Cupping at Counter Culture Coffee
Counter Culture Coffee will be holding their weekly FREE coffee cuppingat the training facility in Durham this Friday at 10am. The cuppings provide a great opportunity to learn more about the different flavors and profiles expressed by different coffee. The tasting is followed by a tour of the roasting facility. I’ve attended a cupping in the past and really enjoyed it. Here is my recap of the experience.

Full Steam Brewery “Fellowship of the IPA”
Starting Friday and lasting and all weekend long Fullsteam will host the “Fellowship of the IPA”, a celebration of rare and creative India Pale Ales. All brewed right here in North Carolina. They’ve been gathering 25 or so kegs and the pours will start at 2 pm on Friday and continue throughout the weekend. You can learn more about the event and see the full lineup of beers here.

Saturday March 21st

Sola PopUp Market
They were rained out last weekend so the PopUp Market was rescheduled for this Saturday 9am-1pm. Enjoy great coffee and local artisans selling their handcrafted wares. Ella’s Race
Are you looking for a 5K , 10K or 1 mile fun run this month and want to support a great cause in the process? Well lace up your running shoes for Ella’s Race on Saturday March 21, 2015 hosted by Chick-fil-A Capital Crossing and Falls Village in North Raleigh. The race will benefit The Cure Starts Now and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation to help pediatric research, aid, and support efforts for children with brain cancer & tumors.

Pittsboro Food Truck Rodeo

Sunday March 22nd

Explore the Neuse Greenway
A new section of the Neuse River Greenway was recently opened near Horseshoe Farm Park connecting the upper Neuse Greenway into one long uninterrupted stretch. It is now possible to travel from Falls Dam in North Raleigh to Clayton on 27.5 miles uninterrupted trail. You’ll encounter the newest section aroun mile 7 (pictured at the top of this post). Exploring the greenway is always a great way to spend a weekend afternoon. http://neuserivertrail.com/

NC Art Museum “Blue Loop” Trail


There are so many great events going on this weekend that I had to put a quick summary together with my suggestions. Whether you are looking for music, beer, or food trucks there is something fun going on each day this weekend. Below are my top pics. If you are just looking to get outside I recommend visiting the blue loop trail behind the NC Art Museum in Raleigh. I recently paid the trail a visit and snapped the picture above. It is a great spot for a short walk or run and enjoy this great fall weather! Have a great weekend of exploring!

Latte Art Throwdon at HQ Raleigh
Triangle coffee fans gather this Thursday at 7pm at HQ Raleigh to watch a friendly competition between the Triangle’s best baristas as they celebrate the local coffee community and go head to head to see who can create the best latte art. Free to spectate, $5 to compete. Event Details

Ponysaurus Beer at Beer Study in Chapel Hill

Find Your Cool Free Jazz Concert in Durham’s CCB Plaza

Big Wheel Race in Downtown Raleigh
 Like the idea of adults racing on big wheels? The Flow Mini of Raleigh Big Wheels Downhill Monster Race at Natty Greene’s this Thursday at 6:30pm to benefit Action for Healthy Kids. PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series
Watch the movie “Dirty Dancing” and music by the Nick River Band 5-10:30pm. For six Fridays this summer, the movie series is expected to attract over 6,000 attendees to City Plaza. This year, the movie series will feature films made in North Carolina. Prior to each movie, the event will host a variety of local food trucks, downtown restaurant offerings, and regional microbrew beer options. Event Details

Blues on the Plaza at Northgate Mall in Durham
Free Blues show 6-9pm by Jimi King Trio, Rocking Blues trio, specializing in danceable swinging Texas-style blues. This power trio from Raleigh features guitar, bass, drums and vocals, interweaving the sounds and styles of many of the great blues giants. (Food available for purchase from Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse and Deli-icous Food Truck; Beer available for purchase from Bull City Burger & Brewery) Event Details

Friday on the Porch at Carolina Inn
Vintage Jazz Band Tea Cup Gin will be putting on a Free show tonight in Chapel Hill. Fridays on the Front Porch (FOFP) is a popular end-of-the-work-week celebration that takes place every Friday from 5 PM until 8 PM. Tea Cup Gin will be performing tonight; delicious food, beer, wine will be offered, and enjoy our comfortable seating on the shady front porch and lawn. NC Hops and Roots Festival

25th Annual Piedmont Car Show
Free outdoor car show celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Chevrolet. The Show will be at Lake Wheeler Park, 6404 Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh.  Open Show to Cars & Trucks USA Makes 1990 or older.  Event Details

Sunday May 25th

Ornamentea PopUp Market
POP-UP Sunday is this Sunday from 12-5pm in the Ornamentea Parking Lot. The event provides local businesses, artists and the community a chance to mingle. This Sunday’s market will feature several artist vendors, Big Boss Beer, and Stuft food truck with their tasty gourmet stuffed potatoes. Always a fun time and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Belgian Waffle Truck at Deep River Brewing Company in Clayton
Staying in town? Make the short drive down to Deep River Brewing Company in Clayton and enjoy a cold pint in their cool taproom. They have plenty of seating at the bar and at picnic tables outside where you can enjoy a belgian waffle from the new Belgain Waffology food truck this Sunday from 1-6pm!

Weekend Picks! April 10-13th

Carrboro Open Streets

Spring is always a happening time in the Triangle and this weekend is no different. This week’s picks start with notable local beer news on Thursday followed by some fun outdoor and music events happening over the weekend. No matter what you end up doing I hope this list of things to do in the Triangle helps you discover something new about the area and get out side to enjoy this great warmer weather!

Thursday April 10th

Sam’s Bottle Shop Grand Opening – Durham
The people behind Sam’s Quick Stop are opening up a huge craft beer bottle shop on NC 54 in Durham. Grand Opening is this Thursday. Read all about it here.

Brueprint Brewery Soft Opening – Apex
The Triangle’s newest brewery launches this Thursday with a soft opening starting at 5pm. This brewery is the first one in the area to be located in Apex. Check out their story and list of beers on their website.

Friday April 11th
RTP Food Truck Rodeo – Durham
Each Friday 11:30 am-1:30pm at 800 Park Office Drive in RTP. They typically have between 4-6 trucks.  Outdoor seating is provided and you’re welcome to bring picnic blankets, frisbees or hackysacks.

Nasher Museum Archibald Motley Exhibit – Durham
Archibald Motley includes 42 works from each period of Motley’s lifelong career, from 1919 to 1960. Motley’s scenes of life in the African-American community, often in his native Chicago, depict a parallel universe of labor and leisure. His portraits are voyeuristic but also genealogical examinations of race, gender and sexuality.

Historic Boylan Heights Home Tour & Tunes – Raleigh
Ten homes in historic Boylan Heights will open their doors to the public to celebrate the neighborhood’s historic and artistic character as area musicians perform in homes along the tour in a nod to the neighborhood’s longstanding musical tradition. Ticketed event ($10/$15)

PopUp Market & Tea Cup Gin Jazz Music at Sola Coffee – Raleigh
Saturday morning Sola hosts 15 local artisans at their Spring PopUp Market. These events feature local artists and crafters selling unique locally made products. Market runs from 10am-2pm. Then Saturday evening Sola turns back the clock with some good old fashion jazz music with the band Tea Cup Gin. They play jazz and show tunes from early 20th century. Tea Cup Gin draws inspiration from performers such as Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, and Billie Holiday. Music starts at 7:30pm. Food, beer, and coffee served all evening.

Sunday April 13th
Rock-n-Roll Raleigh Marathon & Half Marathon – Downtown Raleigh
On Sunday 12,500 runners will descend on downtown Raleigh. It is always fun to watch these races and cheer on the competitors, but this race will have some added entertainment with musical performances scheduled in the morning and afternoon at the Red Hat Amphitheater.
