Picture of the Week – Music on the patio at Uncorked!

This week’s picture comes from my table on the patio at Uncorked, a wine shop located in North Raleigh in the Falls River Town Center.  They hold free wine tastings each Friday and often have live music on Saturday nights out on the Patio.  On the night this photo was taken, my wife and I were enjoying a great acoustic performance by Donnie Howard.  We returned to Uncorked the following week and saw another talented act called “Attic Orchestra”.  They were a four piece band made up of a flute, stand-bass, violin, and electric guitar.  If you want to know what bands are coming to Uncorked sign up for their newsletter on their website follow them on Facebook!

Looking for Organic Wine? Check out Sip … a wine store in Cary!

Last Friday my wife and I met up with some friends to check out a new wine shop in Cary called Sip …. a wine store.  They were holding a free tasting event that night which offered us the perfect opportunity to explore this uique shop.  Sip is special in that they are the only wine shop in the Triangle that only carries Organic and eco-friednly wines.

We are huge fans of wine but, whenever possible we try to buy organic, but most wine shops only have a handful of such offerings.  Not so at Sip, where you can find a wide variety of certified organic wines and other wines created using biodynamic farming practices that incorporate more earth-friendly techniques.  I appreciate the environmental aspect of organic agricultural practices while my wife is more interested in the fact that certified organic wines usually have no added sulfites.

The shop is located in Cary’s Preston Walk shopping center (map) and even though I live in N. Raleigh the trip over there was fast and easy.  I just took  I-540 to the Chapel Hill Road exit and was pulling up to the shop within a few minutes.  When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to see that in addition to having several great wines to tast and light munchies (including gluten free chips) that there was live music!  April, the owner of the shop, was very friendly and knowledgable about the wines and was happy to answer all of our questions.

In addition to the large variety of wines we were  also excited to see that  they offered wines from a wide range of price points with many great options in the $9 to $15 range.  Several of the wines we tasted that night were less than $10 and we had a hard time deciding which we liked most.

The cool thing about Sip is that in addition to the tastings you can purchase a 1/2 glass or full glass of wine, which we did and ended up spending an hour just relaxing listening to the live guitar music and chatting with the owner.  They also seel organic beers and ciders whcih you can buy by the six pack or by individual if you are looking to try something new.  They even have some of them cold so you can enjoy a beer in the store.  Hanging out there on Friday evening is easy enough since the shop has a warm country boutique vibe to right down to chalk board signs and the large rustic wooden “butcher-block” like tasting bar.

Another free tasting event is scheduled for tonight (7/30) where they will be tasting organic and biodynamic wines from Benziger from 4-8pm. Stop by if get the chance.  You will be glad you did!  For more information about Sip and to learn about future tasting events at their shop check out their website or join their facebook fanpage.

Celebrate The “Beer Olympics” at Wine 101

This past weekend I stopped by to see my friend Joe, the wine aficionado and owner of Wine 101. Don’t let the name fool you, while grapes may be his first love, he also has a wide variety of specialty microbrews in the wine shop. I have even spotted a few growlers of local Lonerider brew in the cooler on occasion. In fact, Wine 101 is having a beer tasting event Friday February 12th called the “Beer Olympics”. For $10 you get to celebrate the opening ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic flame in Vancouver by sampling over 25 beers from around the world at Wine 101. (No, you don’t have to try all 25!). After an evening of beer swirling guests will vote on their favorites and in Olympic fashion award gold, silver, and bronze medals to the beer champions. (I’m pulling for the Belgians!). So if you like beer and are looking for a fun way to kick off the 2010 Olympics check out the wine 101 website for more information.

Enjoy Wine and Art at Seaboard Wine Warehouse in Downtown Raleigh!

Recently I took an out of town guest to downtown Raleigh last night to check out some art as part of the local “First Friday” celebration. Usually we head to Artspace but decided instead to check out the artwork being featured at the Seaboard Wine Warehouse located in the Seaboard Station next to Logan’s Nursery. I love this wine store because they have agreat selection of wines, friendly staff, and they offer free wine tastings on Saturdays from 12-4 and also sell wine “flights” on Thursday and Friday evenings. They now even have some new tables set up in the tasting bar area where you can relax and drink a bottle of your favorite vino with friends.

Each month Seaboard features the photography or paintings of a local artists. During my most recent visit they were featuring the oil paintings and photography of Annelies Gentile. I highly recommend you check out Seaboard if you are in the downtown area and looking to pick up a great bottle of wine or just looking for something different to do. It is a great way to meet people if you are new to the area. You can read more about the Seaboard Wine Warehouse and its tasting bar and other events on their website here: Seaboard Website
