The Baker’s Dozen Donut Shop Now Open in North Raleigh

Donut2

If you live in Cary you may already be familiar with Baker’s Dozen Donuts. I haven’t been to that location yet, but last week I learned that a 2nd location had opened up in North Raleigh back in February. The Raleigh shop is located off Capital Boulevard in the Plantation Point Shopping Center (the strip mall with First Watch) right next door to Triangle Town Center Mall. It’s a nice little space that offers a wide array of donuts made fresh daily with a nice mix of both cake and yeast donuts.

Donut1

The donuts a very affordable in price ranging from about 85 cents to $1.50. A half dozen of their standard donuts cost $4.99 and a dozen is just $7.99. Special treats like their bear claws, cinnamon buns, and apple fritters are little more expensive at $1.25 to $1.50, but well worth the price. Everything I had was fresh and delicious. I believe this a donut shop that can hold its own when compared to other popular Triangle shops and I’m glad to see it in North Raleigh.

Donut3

Of course every donut shop offers coffee as well, but I was so busy picking out which donuts I wanted that I forgot to ask what coffee beans they use. I will be sure to find out on my next visit. Based on the positive reviews on yelp it is only a matter of time before this becomes a popular donut destination in North Raleigh so make sure you check it out soon. Baker’s Dozen is open every day from 6am to 7pm.

Compass Rose Brewery Grand Opening Celebration This Saturday

c8

Compass Rose Brewery opened this past May in North Raleigh. Now that they have been up and running for a few months and have their brewing operation underway they plan to celebrate with a Grand Opening party this Saturday, October 24th. To mark the occasion they’ll have live music, food trucks, and of course plenty of their own beers and guest brews on tap.

c1

I’ve been to the brewery several times over the summer and it has quickly become one of my favorite places to hang out and enjoy a pint or two. Part of the reason is it is located very close to my house in North Raleigh. The brewery and taproom is just off Gresham Road in an industrial park situated between Litchford Road and Capital Boulevard. But convenience is only one aspect of Compass Rose that makes it a great spot.

c5

Another big draw for me is that the taproom is very impressive. It’s around 5500 sq ft of open space with high ceilings, and reclaimed wood finishes with an industrial design look. There’s a ton of room with lots of seating including large picnic tables and long high-top tables making it the perfect spot to meet with groups of friends. There are several strategiaclly placed tvs including a large screen projector making it a nice option for watch games. They also host weekly events include Trivia, Open Mic Night, live music and a rotation of local food trucks. There are also board games and a large chalkboard wall for kids giving the space a family friendly vibe – and yes they are dog friendly too!

c2

Of course, the main attraction is the beer, Compass Rose is 10 BBL brewery offering a rotating selection of their own craft beers along with guest beers from other breweries from NC and beyond. They typically have around 16 beers on tap in addition to wine by the glass. There is large glass wall which provides a nice view of their brewing tanks from the taproom. This Saturday at the Grand Opening Compass Rose will have six of their own beers on tap Saturday including their Oktoberfest, Saison, Pale Ale, Pumpkin Hefeweizen, IPA and Agave Cream Ale.

c3

The party this weekend will also include live music and food trucks. “Fontaine”, a pop and rock band that recently moved to Raleigh from Boston, plays from from 1 to 4 pm followed by 80-90s rock band “Dispense As Written” playing from 7:30 pm until 11pm. Food trucks scheduled Saturday include Kat-n-Around (German Food) serving from noon to 6 pm along with Not Just Icing (Cupcakes) and Arepa Culture (awesome Arepas!) serving from 6 pm on.

Whether you plan to check out the Grand Opening Party this weekend or visit on another day I highly recommend a visit to Compass Rose. North Raleigh desperately needed its own brewery and with their great selection of beers and beautiful space Compass Rose has delivered a wonderful brewery and taproom to fill the need.

Gonza Tacos y Tequila Summer Menu Preview

Gonza Tacos - N. Raleigh

Gonza Tacos y Tequila ~ North Raleigh Location

Gonza Tacos y Tequila is one of my favorite local restaurants so I was pretty excited when earlier this month I had the opportunity to attended a media preview of there new summer menu specials. I live in North Raleigh so I visit the Gonza location on Lead Mine Road by Sola Coffee fairly regularly. Over the past year Gonza has also opened locations in Wake Forest and downtown Durham, and has a fourth location in the works on Hillsborough Street by NC State. The new summer specials will rotate throughout the summer months as weekly drink, appetizer or entree selections at all three locations. (note: the Hillsborough Street location is set to open in late August)

Ceviche

The tasting kicked off with some new ceviche offerings including a unique roasted red pepper citrus infusion with a side of spicy popcorn. Also new is the tuna & watermelon ceviche and “four citrus” ceviche with bay scallops & cucumber. I’m a bit new to ceviche, but I enjoyed exploring these complementary flavor combinations of citrus and spice and think they make a great summer addition to the menu.

Summer Tacos

Summer Tacos

There are also three new tacos (short rib, shrimp adobado, and smoked brisket) that will appear as entree specials this summer. I loved the tasty short rib taco with creme fraiche, charred poblano, and corn salsa. The marinated smoked brisket tacos with three chile salsa and carrot & cabbage salsita is also a flavorful new addition. Sadly I am allergic to shell fish so I could not try the pan seared shrimp tacos with avocado and tomatillo salsa but they got a thumbs up from my fellow foodies lucky enough to enjoy them.

New Summer Cocktails

Gonza already has an impressive bar setup and expansive drink menu, but they are offering some new signature drinks this summer that are well worth exploring. In explaining the new drinks, the bar manager expressed a desire to expose customers to the versatility of tequila beyond your typical margarita. New additions include the ginger tamarind made with fresh ginger, tamarind puree, tequila, triple sec, and sea salt. Also new are the pineapple cilantro, watermelon mint, and sage melon cocktails – all of which are sure to be refreshing on a hot summer day.

Dining Area at Gonza North Raleigh Location

For me these new summer menu items offer an opportunity to explore new flavors beyond my regular favorites at Gonza. I’m a bit of a creature of habit when it comes to ordering food, so I’m looking forward to changing things up and ordering these new items over the summer. No matter what you order I highly recommend visiting any one of their locations. I’ve been consistently impressed with the food, service, and atmosphere at all three locations and look forward to checking out there new restaurant on Hillsborough Street once its opens.

North Raleigh Gets A Cheese Shop!

Six Forks Cheese

Six Forks Cheese Shop ~ Lafayette Village

I made a quick visit to Lafayette Village last night to check on the progress of Six Forks Cheese. This is a new cheese shop opening up in North Raleigh that will offer a host of fresh gourmet cheeses with a focus on American and European cheese and a special selection of local small-batch and NC farmstead cheeses (Chapel Hill Creamery, Goat Lady Dairy, Looking Glass, Spinning Spider, Cultured Cow and more). The shop will also feature a full line of unique meats, relishes, accoutrements and charcuterie.

When I stopped by I was happy to see a sign on the door announcing they plan to open this Friday July 18th! I’m looking forward to checking out this locally owned and operated cheese shop and plan to return once they open and share additional pictures. In the meantime check out their facebook page here.

Parking Lot Party w/ Food Trucks at Taylor’s Wine Shop in Raleigh Saturday June 21st

Taylor's Wine Shop

Taylor’s Wine Shop

Taylor’s Wine Shop is a hidden gem in North Raleigh. Don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you. This is a top notch wine shop with a nice selection of wines & craft beers offered by knowledgeable and friendly staff. Join them this Saturday, June 21st 1-4pm for one of Taylor’s famous Parking Lot Parties. The event will feature live music by Velvet Goldfish, Free beer and wine tastings, and two awesome local food trucks: Sol Tacos selling gourmet southern tacos & Not Just Icing offering delicious cupcakes. You can learn a little more about both of these great food trucks below.

Sol Tacos

Sol Tacos

Sol Tacos serves tacos in soft hand made soft tortillas. Owner Andy Schaumann has worked in a kitchen his whole life and prides himself on using locally sourced southern organic ingredients whenever possible that compliment Mexican street food including herbs fresh from his own garden.

Sol Tacos Fish Taco

Buttermilk Fried Flounder Taco

I am a big fan of Sol Taco’s buttermilk fried flounder taco with cilantro sour cream, lettuce, and citrus radish salad. Other great menu offerings include the blackened chicken nacho taco, cheddar chuck burger and beer braised pulled pork tacos. I also here he may have a special side item this weekend. A stuffed avacado BLT with thick cut bacon, compari tomatoes, and maldon sea salt. You can read more about Sol Tacos in this great post about the truck by local food truck guru Art over at The Wandering Sheppard.

Not Just Icing

Not Just Icing

Not Just Icing is the Triangle’s first mobile cupcakery making their cupcakes right there on the truck. They are committed to providing made from scratch, baked fresh daily on the truck scrumptious treats throughout the Triangle area. I’ve had their cupcakes a several times now and they are fantastic!

Not Just Icing Cupcake

Strawberry Delight

Not Just Icing’s cupcakes are made using all-natural ingredients with real butter instead of oils and real fruit instead of fruit flavored extracts. Their cupcakes are free of preservatives so they are best eaten the day you buy them. My current favorite cupcake is their “Strawberry Delight”, a vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream icing topped with a fresh strawberry slice.

Hope to see you at the party – make sure you bring a lawn chair and stay a while to enjoy the music!
