Picture of the Week – Cheese Plate from Vinos Finos y Picadas

vinos1

The subject of this week’s picture is a small cheese plate I enjoyed during a recent visit to Vinos Finos y Picadas located in the new Lafayette Village Shopping Center in North Raleigh off Falls of Neuse Road. Vino’s is a South American wine cafe’ that features wines primarily from Argentina and Chile.  They also offer a nice selection of meat and cheese plates in along and other “picadas” (an Argentine plate meaning “bites”) to accompany their wines.  This particular plate was $9 and came with five different cheeses along with fresh bread and a piece of dried pear, appricot, date, and fig. I plan to go back to Vino’s soon to enjoy some of the wine “flights” that they offer during the week.

The Art of Relaxation ~ Calm and Sense in Raleigh.

DSC07349

I don’t know about you, but the start of 2011 has been pretty hectic for me.  Between all the holiday travel and work commitments it is easy to pack each day with too many chores and other responsibilities.  One of my resolutions in the new year is to make time to relax and enjoy the moment.

Thankfully, my wife has introduced me to a store right here in Raleigh that is dedicated to stress relief and relaxation.  Calm and Sense seeks to help their customers achieve relaxation through exploration of the five human senses.  They do this by helping you find your personal stress relief triggers. Whether through sight, smell, sound, taste or touch.

Calm and Sense is located at the corner of Oberlin Rd & Glenwood Avenue next to the Harris Teeter (link to map) and features a wide selection of unique stress-relieving natural products and gifts, many from women-owned and local businesses.

The shop features stress relieving items like soothing eye masks, neck wraps, spa robes, bath salts, organic bubble baths, and soothing teas. If you prefer, you can purchase pre-made gift baskets or can create a personalized basket to give the gift of relaxation to someone special.

Calm and Sense also supports the community by serving as a central meeting place for stress relieving classes like weekly meditation circles and yoga.  You can view more photos of the shop in my flickr photo album.  To learn more about Calm and Sense and their upcoming specials and events you can visit their website or join their facebook fan page.

Original Update – September 20th, 2010

I grabbed these photos a few weeks ago when I stopped by the construction site of the new Whole Foods being built in North Raleigh. I am impressed with all the progress they have made.  I think they are on track for a December or January opening.  It will be so nice when this location opens and the residents of N. Raleigh don’t have to trek down to the Wade Avenue location to shop!

The North Raleigh Whole Foods broke gound back in February 2010.  The 40,000 square foot Whole Foods store will serve as the anchor for Regency Center’s proposed Market at Colonnade retail center.  The market will be located at Six Forks Road and Colonnade Center Drive in North Raleigh, just one mile south of I-540 (near the intersection of Six Forks & Strickland Road).  I’ll keep my eye on its progress and will provide additional updates and any news about its “Grand Opening” in the future.

A Trip To Escazu Chocolate – Downtown Raleigh Chocolatier!

Escazu3

Last weekend I made a trip to Escazu Chocolates at their new location on Blount Street  near the Historic Mordecai Neighborhood in Downtown Raleigh (map).  Escazu specializes in uniquely flavored handcrafted chocolates made from organic cocoa beans from Latin America.   They are a true chocolatier in that they actually make their own chocolate right there in the shop from beans they import from Costa Rica and Venezuela.   Escazu originally started out in New Bern, NC before moving  to Raleigh to open a boutique store on Glenwood Avenue South back in 2007.  They moved into their new location on Blount Street next door to The Market Restaurant in the spring of 2010 and have been well received by the neighborhood.

escazu1

It is a small little shop with a collection of wooden tables and impressive display case of their chocolates.  As you relax and savor their handmade creations at one of the tables you can actually see them making chocolate in the back through a window in the front shop wall.  Their chocolates resemble pieces of modern art and are almost too pretty to eat and range between $1.00 and $2.00 a piece.  This may sound like a lot, but after tasting one I assure you that you will be more than happy to pay for the quality and unique flavors they serve.  Regular chocolate candies found in the local drug store don’t even begin to compare with chocolate creations they produce at Escazu.

They offer a wide variety of flavors and always seem to be working on inventing something new.  In the past they have featured such worldly flavors as bourbon vanilla ganache, blueberry filled dark chocolates, and a balsamic vinegar white chocolate.  On this latest visit I sampled a dark chocolate made with goat’s milk, dark chocolate with basil, and a chocolate with chili and lime (pictured left to right in the above photo). All of them were quite excellent!

Escazu2

The picture above is a close-up of my favorite – the dark chocolate with basil.  You wouldn’t think these two flavors would go together, but they complement each other perfectly!  The amazing thing about the Escazu chocolates is how satisfying they are.  Instead of stuffing your face with handfuls of cheap candy that leave you feeling ill and unfulfilled, these handcrafted pieces of edible art dazzle your taste buds and fill your mouth with a flavor that is so satisfying you only need a few bites, and yet they still leave you longing for your next visit to try a new flavor.

In addition to their chocolates, the folks at Escazu offer baked goods prepared by the well known local baker Crumb and serve organic coffee from Raleigh’s own Larry’s Beans.  I’m sure I will be back again soon to try some new flavors, but I am also looking forward to visiting them later this winter to try some of their hot chocolate!  The next time you are in the Downtown Raleigh area be sure to check out this hidden gem.  Your taste buds will thank you!

The Best Panini Ever! Check Out Toast In Durham!

toast6

Last weekend while visiting Durham I finally had the chance to stop in at Toast to have lunch.   Toast is a “paninoteca” – an authentic Italian sandwich shop.  Their specialities include Paninis, Tramezzini, Bruschetta, and Crostini.  They also offer fresh salads and homemade soups and you can even buy an NC microbrew to enjoy with your lunch!    They are located in the Five Points area of Downtown Durham along West Main Street right next to Whiskey.  The bulk of their seating is indoors,  but they do offer outdoor seating with a few tables and umbrellas out of the brick sidewalk.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the food and was really looking forward to checking it out.  I was not dissapointed.  The folks at Toast made the best panini I’ve ever had!  I ordered the grilled chicken pannini with roasted peppers, mozzareall, and salsa verde.  It was delicious.   Easily the best pannini I have ever had the pleasure of easting!  My wife was equally impressed with her salad and homemade lentil soup.  From what I understand, whenever possible they try to use local suppliers of the produce, meats, cheeses, and bread they use in their sandwhiches.

If having great local food wasn’t enough, the fact that it was so affordable made it even better.  Lunch for two including a drink was just over $15.  If I worked in Downtown Durham this place would be my regualr lunch spot.  It looks like their good reputation is growing too.  I was really impressed with how busy they were on an afternoon during the weekend.  Many downtown lunch spots tend to see less traffic on weekends when the work crowd isn’t around, but Toast clearly has a loyal customer base that carries through the weekend.

Toast is open Monday – Friday from 8am-8pm and Saturday from 8am-3pm. Closed on Sundays.  For more info about their menu check out their website or follow them on their Facebook Fan Page.
