I was driving home from work last Thursday when I spotted local artist Dan Nelson with his easle set up on the sidewalk at the intersection of Peace & Person Streets in downtown Raleigh. I pulled over and snapped this picture of him capturing the local Krispy Kreme shop on his canvas as the sun was setting. Dan is an incredible artist and is well known for his live art performances were he creates amazing works right in front of the audiences eyes. You can learn more about Dan’s work and find out were he will be next by following him on facebook. According to his most recent post, the painting he was creating above is now complete and on display and available for sale at PieBird.

Picture of the Week – Morning visit to Yellow Dog Bread Company in Raleigh
I snapped this week’s photo yesterday during my early morning visit to the new Yellow Dog Bread Company. Yellow Dog is located in the redeveloped strip mall located at the corner of Franklin & Person Street in downtown Raleigh. This area is undergoing an incredible revitalization and is quickly becoming a hot spot of local activity downtown. While I typically pick up a baked good during my visits, on this particular morning I stopped in for a quick cappuccino made by my friend and local coffee aficionado AJ. Yellow Dog uses beans from Lamplighter Roasting Co. out of Richmond, VA and the drink AJ crafted for me with their espresso was fantastic.
I’ve made several visit to Yellow Dog in recent weeks to try their various breads, cookies, and other baked goods and plan on sharing a full overview in a featured post on the blog in the very near future. In the meantime make sure you check this place out. It is quickly becoming one of my weekly “must visit” spots!

Picture of the Week – Abbots Creek Trail in North Raleigh
These past few months I have found myself spending a lot of time on the Raleigh Greenway System as I get ready to run my very first Marathon this November. I will be running in the City of Oaks Marathon right here in Raleigh and I’ve been training all summer to meet this new challenge. I live close to the new Neuse Greenway Trail and one of my favorite routes takes connects me with the nearby Abbots Creek Trail (pictured above). I love running on this trail and enjoy the view from the pedestrian bridge as I run over the marshy terrain in that area. It is amazing to run on this trail and take in the natural surroundings in an otherwise highly developed suburban area of Raleigh. It is particularly stunning in the fall as the foliage begins change color. I hope you get a chance to get outside and enjoy it this weekend. It is going to be a great one!

Picture of the Week – Falls Lake Dam
This week’s picture was taken during a fun bike ride along the Falls Lake Dam this past Sunday. I’ve been doing a lot of running as I train for the City of Oaks Marathon and biking the day after my long runs is a great way to shake out the kinks in my legs. One of my favorite places to bike is along the dam with great views of the lake on one side and the Neuse River on the other. You can also easily connect to the Neuse Greenway which provides for a great 6.5 mile ride along the river from the dam to the WRAL soccer park on Reedy Creek Road.

Picture of the Week – Iris inside NCMA!
This week’s picture comes from my very first visit to the North Carolina Museum of Art this past Friday for the weekly “Art in the Evening” event. I had no idea that inside the museum I would find Iris, a full service restaurant serving american fare with an international flare. According to those who have eaten there has some really great food. I’ve been told the brunch menu in particular is something to check out. Of course being inside the museum means the dining setting is picturesque as well. I look forward to heading back soon to dine there. You can view their full menu on their website here.
