Luchadoras 3 – Lady “Lucha Libre” Wrestling Returns to Motorco Music Hall in Durham ~ February 25th!

This Saturday lady wrestling in “lucha libre” fashion returns to the Motorco Music Hall in Durham. The previous two events have been sell outs so get there early to get your tickets. This is a family friendly event. Check out the video at the bottom of this post for scenes from Lucharodas II back in January.

From the Motorco Website:

  • Date: Saturday, February 25, 2012 Show Starts: 12:30 pm
  • Cost:$5.00
  • With: Las Jarrochitas Taco Truck & bikeCoffee

LUCHADORAS have taken a firm stranglehold on the Triangle, selling out consecutive shows with a dizzying display of tactical wrestling and acrobatics. The growing buzz and widespread fanfare are evident each time the expanding team of masked female wrestlers take the ring.

Each Luchadora has committed to further researching the history of lucha libre to ensure a proper tribute is issued each time they put on their mask. “LUCHADORAS 3” is sure to be another installment of memorable excitement as Motorco Music Hall welcomes veteran and incumbent Luchadoras. The exuberant Mexican wrestling spectacular that marries astonishing acrobatics and exhilarating aerial maneuvers with flamboyant masked characters and outlandish story lines will be on display, Saturday, February 25th at noon.

In Mexico, lucha libre (free wrestling) rivals soccer in attendance, and boasts a 75-year history of imaginative, family-friendly entertainment. The tradition of wearing masks dates back to the Aztecs and the designs are meant to evoke the power of animals, gods and other ancient heroes. The “luchador” or wrestler takes on that identity and the mask is so sacred that to wager and lose one’s mask in a battle is considered a disgrace.

Like the first two events, LUCHADORAS 3 will bring the well-loved Mexican tradition to Durham with a slight twist – only female wrestlers will be permitted to compete. The 3-hour daytime spectacle will feature numerous one-on-one matches, tag team bouts, and entertaining intermissions involving crowd participation. Additionally, patrons will have an opportunity to consume authentic Mexican street fare from famed area taco truck Captain Ponchos Tacos, drink some “Los Luchadores” coffee from Counter Culture prepared by bikeCOFFEE, and to meet and greet their favorite Luchadoras after the event.

The Luchadoras’ costumes have been assembled using recycled materials from Durham’s beloved Scrap Exchange, while Fanaticmasks of Carrboro camouflages many of the athletes with their authentic, North Carolina-made lucha libre masks.

LUCHADORAS 3 will benefit the NC Dream Team and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

NC Dream Team, is an organization composed of undocumented immigrant youth and allies dedicated to the creation of a sustainable, community-led immigrant rights movement in North Carolina. The group aims to help undocumented youth recognize their individual and collective power to activate their communities, working to achieve a just reform that is acceptable to–and guided by–the voices of those directly affected by our broken immigration system.

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, is an organization committed to pioneering innovative, transformative solutions designed to end hunger in our community.

World Beer Festival Returns to Raleigh April 14, 2012

Beer Taps at Tugboat Brewery in Portland, Oregon

Late last week All About Beer magazine announced the dates for the Raleigh World Beer Festival. The 2012 event will be held April 14 in Moore Square.

Tickets will go on sale to subscribers of All About Beer Magazine on February 27, 2012.  Tickets will go on sale to the general public on March 5, 2012.  The festival offers two four-hour sessions.  Standard admission to a single session is $40 in advance.  Admission gets you an event program, tasting glass, and access to sample literally hundreds of different beers from all over the word, including all of local breweries from right here in the Triangle. There are also special VIP tickets available for $75 that give you access to certain beers not made available to the other event attendees. As in the past, the event is broken up into two sessions. The first session (afternoon session) runs from 12-4pm. The second session (evening session) runes from 6-10pm.

Tickets can be purchased online here  or etix.com and at select retail outlets in the Triangle area.

If you plan to go this event I highly recommend you plan on getting your tickets as soon as they go on sale. This event has been known to sell out quickly in the past.  If you wait too long you will find your only option is surfing craig’s list for tickets at inflated prices.

Note: The pictures above and below were taken on my recent trip to Portland Oregon where I was fortunate enough to sample many fine local brews.

Cafe’ Prost of Wake Forest: German Pretzels Arrive in The Triangle!

Cafe Prost Gourmet Pretzel Truck out of Wake Forest

I’ve been following this Cafe Prost for some time now and happy to see they are now out on the Streets of the Triangle on a regualr basis adding to the local foodie scene!  Their truck is based out of Wake Forest and serves up the most incredible German pretzels I’ve ever had. They keep it simple by focusing on gourmet German pretzels but also offer some amazing oatmeal walnut raisin cookies and fresh brewed coffee as well.

Today's Menu

Last week I caught up with the Cafe Prost truck while it was parked at the Star Mart Service Station at 818 South Main Street in Wake Forest across the street from the blue Aqaurium Outfitters building (Link to Map). You can typically find the truck parked in this spot Wednesday through Friday from 8am to noon throughout the month of February. On Saturdays they are usually set up across the street from the Durham Farmers’ Market and they are starting to make regular appearances at Fullsteam Brewery.

Pesto Romano Pretzel from Cafe Prost

When I stopped by their truck last week in Wake Forest they were offering three kinds of pretzels: traditional Swabian-German pretzels topped with sea salt, pesto romano pretzels, and jalapeno provolone pretzels.  They were just pulling a tray of freshly bakes pesto roman and jalapeno provolone pretzels out of the oven when I arrived so I bought one of each and a coffee. The pretzels were amazing!  The pretzels are soft and fluffy on the inside with warm toasted exterior that provides a synergistic texture on your tounge.

Jalapeno Provolone Pretzel from Cafe Prost

The pesto romano pretzel was my favorite with just the right balance of herb and cheese. I would have never thought of adding peppers as a topping to a pretzle, but I found the jalapeno provolone pretzel to be delicious as well. The jalapeno was not too hot and went incredibly well with the toasted cheese to compliment the pretzel.  Both pretzels were so flavorful I found I didn’t even need mustard (which I love) and instead enjoyed them both “as is”. I would recommend trying both of these pretzels and look forward to having more of them and other pretzle offerings from Cafe Prost in the future.

Cafe Prost

Cafe Prost accepts both cash and credit cards as methods of payment.  To keep posted on where they will be each week you can follow them on twitter @cafeprost.  If you are interested in having Cafe Prost park their pretzel truck at your place of business or special event or buying their pretzels for resale you can contact them through their website for more information. I think they  would make a great addition to the food truck rotation at both Fullsteam and Big Boss brewery as well as the soon to open White Street Brewery in Wake Forest. I mean who out there doesn’t like warm soft pretzels and beer?
