Celebrate Pi Day “π” ~ 3.14

Friday March 14th is Pi Day.  Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14159.

According to wikipedia “Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π. Some schools hold competitions as to which student can recall Pi to the highest number of decimal places.”

While I don’t condone throwing pies, and I am not aware of any local challenges to recite Pi, there are some great places to get a slice of pie on Friday. Below are a few suggestions!

Pie Bird – Raleigh
Known for their sweet and savory pies, PieBird will be serving up dessert pie slices at a special $3.14 price all day long Friday.

Sugarland Bakery – Chapel Hill & Raleigh
Will be featuring numerous pies and tarts to enjoy at both their Raleigh & Chapel Hill locations this Friday.

Yellow Dog Bread – Raleigh
In addition to their great breads, pastries, and coffee, Yellow Dog will have yummy fruit hand pies for sale this Friday.

Scratch – Durham
Scratch is “the place” to get an awesome piece of pie in Durham. They not only have exquisite pastries and pies but also serve excellent Intelligentsia coffee and espresso. Slices of pie will be $3.14 this Friday!

Pie Pushers Pizza at Cocoa Cinnamon – Durham
Not interested in a sweet pie? Stop by Cocoa Cinnamon  Friday evening 4-10pm for “Pi Night”. The Pie Pushers Pizza truck will be parked outside the shop slinging slices of gourmet pizza pie. If you still want something sweet you can always find some excellent locally made baked goods in Cocoa Cinnamon’s pastry case!

Sola Coffee & Cafe’ Introduces New Dinner Menu!

Sola for Dinner ~ Assorted Meats & Cheeses

If you follow me on instagram and twitter then you know I am no stranger to Sola Coffee & Café. They are one of my “go to” places for great coffee and espresso drinks in Raleigh. Yet my pictures of coffee and cool latte art only tell half of the story at Sola. Over the past year Sola has blossomed into a great café with a creative and ever growing food menu that now offers great options for the dinner crowd in addition to their already well known breakfast and lunch offerings.

Earlier this fall Sola introduced a new dinner menu featuring additional menu items diners can enjoy at their café after 5pm Mon-Sat. The new dinner menu features small plate items like meat and cheese boards with fresh fruit, nuts, olives and local honey, bruschetta, and new fresh salads and artisan pizzas. This is all in addition to their already fantastic menu of homemade soups and sandwiches that Sola continues to offer (along with their famous mini doughnuts which are always available!)

White Garden Pizza

If you follow Sola on facebook you will often catch updates about the homemade soups they offer, like this weeks vegetarian chili! My current favorite new menu item at Sola is the White Garden Pizza (pictured above) with mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, spinach, pesto, basil and a flavorful balsamic glaze. As with all their menu items, the ingredients for the new dinner options are always fresh in addition to locally and regionally sourced whenever possible.

Local Beers & European Wines

With the addition of new food items, Sola has also started offering a select menu of locally brewed craft beers and several great European wines. I love the local beer scene in the Triangle and am thrilled to see Sola offering brews made by some of my favorite local places like LoneRider Brewery and Big Boss Brewery. If you are more of a wine drinker they have a nice selection of whites and reds to enjoy with dinner. I’m a big fan of gruner veltliner wines out of Austria. I find the spicy fruitiness and dry finish of a gruner makes for the perfect white wine to enjoy during the colder fall months.

Mixed Green Salad

If you have been following my blog recently you know I have been writing a bit about upcoming marathons and half marathons I am preparing for. Part of my training is about eating better and that includes eating more healthy salads. Fortunately I have found lots of great salads at Sola. I particularly enjoy their mixed green salad (shown above). It has a healthy portion of mixed greens along with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, almonds, red onion, and garbanzo beans. The homemade dressing is fantastic and is made using a secret recipe!

Of course, just because I am eating healthier these days doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a treat now and then. There are several sweet options to enjoy at Sola including yummy affogatos (espresso shot poured over a scoop of ice cream) or a slice of cheesecake or chocolate cake. They also now offer a gluten free apple crisp desert which I think is great. It is very yummy and I appreciate the fact they provide options for people with dietary restrictions looking for gluten free items.

Live Music at Sola

If you are looking for a fun date night location in North Raleigh check out the Live Music scene at Sola. They typically have live music each Friday and Saturday night starting around 7:30pm. I’ve heard everything from bluegrass and Jazz to Celtic music played at sola. It is great to see the community support great local artists and I love that there is a great place to grab dinner and hear live music in North Raleigh now on the weekends. Visit their events calendar to keep up to date on the live music schedule.

Of course no matter when you visit Sola you can always enjoy a great coffee or espresso drink. My current drink of choice is the cappuccino. I always make sure I leave room for coffee after dinner! To learn more about Sola and keep up to date on their special events and new menu items visit their website and follow them on facebook.

Make sure you stop by Sola this week and pick up your free invite to their “Thank You Raleigh” celebration scheduled for this Sunday, November 17th. The invite is good for one free drink at the event – donations will be accepted to support the Friends of Guardian ad Litem Program of Wake County and the children they represent.

The folks at Downtown Durham Inc. are reporting that Lilly’s Pizza, one of the most beloved pizza joints in Raleigh, is planning to open a new location in Downtown Durham in 2012. Word is it will fill the location previously occupied by Pop’s (Next to Morgan Imports). This is great news for pizza fans in Durham as the Lilly’s Pizza in Raleigh’s Five Points area is one of the most popular pizza joints in the Triangle.  Not only are they a fan favorite for lovers of gourmet pizza toppings, they are also well known for being one of the few places in the area that offers a gluten free pizza.  Check back here in the coming months updates on progress and the grand opening date.

Triangle Area Pizza: Super Bowl Sunday Options!

I always enjoy eating a nice pizza while watching the Super Bowl. Despite online discussions on review sites like yelp debating the issue, there are actually some really terrific pizza offerings in the Triangle. So where do you plan to get your pie for the big game?

Some options I am considering are (in no particular order) are Klausie’s Pizza, Pie Pushers, Zpizza, and Bella Italia (all pictured below). I may need to flip a coin to decide! I’ve provided links to their websites below if you want to check out their menus and any specials they may be running Super Bowl Sunday. Feel free to post your recommendations for great pizza in the comments section below!

Klausie’s Pizza

Klausie’s Pizza is a pizza truck out of Raleigh that is open for Super Bowl Pizza pickup this Sunday! They will be doing full bakes and take-and-bakes on Sunday from their truck located on 230 Newton Rd off Six Forks Road from 3-6:30pm. Call-in your orders to 919-880-1087. Bella Italia

Bella Italia is located in North Raleigh near the intersection of Falls River Avenue and Durant Road. It is a nice little local Italian Restaurant and they make a good pie that reminds me of the pizzas I use to get at local pizzareia joints up in New Jersey. For more info and to view their menue online visit their website: http://bellaitaliaraleigh.com/

Zpizza is the one chain I would recommend in the area. The reason I favor this chain is that they use organic ingredients in their pies and even have gluten free and vegan options. Their are three Zpizza location in the area. One is on Falls of Neuse in the Falls Pointe Shopping Plaza noth of I-540, the second is located in downtown Raleigh’s City Plaza, the third one is located in Stone Creek Village in Cary. For more info and menu options visit their website: http://www.zpizza.com

Where To Find Gluten Free Pizza In Raleigh

Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. With that, things like regular pizza are usually off the menu for those with Celiac but fortunately there are “gluten free” pizza options in the Triangle.

So far I am only aware of places in Raleigh that sell gluten free pizzas, but I will update this post in the future if I discover any others. The three pizza establishments that currently sell gluten free pizza in Raleigh are Lily’s Pizza, Zpizza, and Bella Monica. I have tried the pizza from the first two and they are quite good (gluten free Zpizza pictured above).  I have not yet had the Bella Monica GF pizza but I hear it is quite good.

You can check out  local blog Gluten Free Raleigh for more information about living gluten free in the Triangle.
