Boulted Bread in Raleigh

Untitled

A few weeks ago I finally made my first visit to Boulted Bread. They are a relatively new bakery located in downtown Raleigh near the historic Boylan Heights neighborhood that offers bread and pastries made with organic, heirloom and locally sourced grains. It was opened by Fulton Forde, Sam Kirkpatrick, and Joshua Bellamy, friends who grew up in Raleigh and reconnected later in life to find they shared a passion for baking and making an impact on their community through the creation of local sustainable food systems.

The bakery is a neat space. It occupies a small renovated storefront on W. South Street that has a rolling garage door on the front that can be opened during the warmer months. There is parking along the side of the building where you will also find a few raised bed gardens and picnic tables along the side wall of the building with a great mural backdrop. The inside space is small but cozy and has a warm vibe. The glass garage door ensures the seating area is basked in morning light. There are only a few tables inside but they are a perfect spot to enjoy a morning pastry and coffee while people come and go to pick up their baked goods for the day.

Boulted offers five primary breads:  Levain, Seeded Rye, Seeded Levain, Ciabatta, and baguettes. They also offer a rotating menu of croissants and other pastry, showcasing seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. On the day I visited I tried an excellent raspberry danish that was perfectly baked with a slightly crisp exterior contrasted by a light and fluffy inside with just the right amount of raspberry. It was the perfect accompaniment to my cup of Counter Culture Coffee which you can also get at the bakery. They had a nice display of other pastries and baked goods and I look forward to going back  to try even more of their great selection.

One unique feature about Boulted Bread is that they mill all of their flour and rye in house using a custom made mill they had made using stone from a quarry in Salisbury, NC. This specialized mill is what allows them to work with heirloom varities of the southern grains in their breads. To help fund the making of the mill Boulted obtained a low interest loan from Slow Money NC, a great organization that focus resources on the local community and works to “build resilience in the local food economy by catalyzing loans to local, sustainable food and farming businesses.” Slow Money NC has also played a role in funding other great local Triangle businesses like Big Spoon Roasters, and Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham. You can learn more about Slow Money NC at http://slowmoneync.org.

Boulted Bread is a cool place to check out and I am really impressed with their baked goods. I’d add this to the top of your list of places to visit in Raleigh if you are a fan of bakeries like me. To wet your appetite I highly recommend following Boulted Bread on instagram where they regularly share pictures of their delicious baked goods. Boulted Bread is open WednesdayFriday 7am-6pm,Saturday and Sunday 8am-5pm. They also sell their baked goods at the Western Wake Farmers’ Market each Saturday.

Drink Local: Fortnight Brewery in Cary

Fortnight Brewery ESB

Fortnight Brewery ESB

A few weeks ago I came a across a nice find in my local bottle shop. Although I had missed the news I discovered Fortnight Brewery in Cary had started canning their beers. In case you didn’t know, Fortnight has only been around for about a year and they focus on UK inspired brews. They have a taproom at the brewery, host food trucks each week (calendar),  and even do tours on the weekends. Fortnight is initially offering their X-Pat IPA, Blonde, and ESB in cans but may offer others in the future as well. I picked a can of the ESB (Extra Special Bitter) to drink at home. I like the copper color and the slight but well balance bitterness of this beer as it reminds me of the bitter style beers I came across on my trip to Australia many years ago. I haven’t been to the brewery yet but hope to stop by this spring. The taproom is open Mon-Thurs 4pm-10pm, Fri-Sat 12pm-11pm, and Sun 12pm-7pm. You can learn more about this local brewery at http://fortnightbrewing.com.

Durham Mardi Gras Celebration Tuesday February 17th!

DM 2014

One of my favorite events is coming up next week! The 2015 Durham Mardi Gras Celebration will be held next Tuesday February 17th! The parade departs the plaza at 201 Corcoran St (by the bull statue) at 7pm and follows a short route along Foster Street down to Geer Street. A printable version of the route can be viewed here. The parade will be preceded by an opening ceremony at 6:45pm when The League of the Tutu will adorn Major the Bull in his very own tutu.

This year event organizers are expanding the party by finishing the parade with an outdoor block party. They have added entertainment and activities on the closed section of Rigsbee Ave between Corporation and Geer Street. Paperhand Puppet Intervention will also be there to drum up some fun and folks are invited to jam in the streets.

Who doesn’t like beer and dogs? Join the Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina (TBR) at Lonerider Brewery in Raleigh on Sunday February 15th from 2 pm – 7 pm to raise money for the beagles! In addition to the usual Lonerider favorites guests will be able to sample some special beagle inspired brews. I hear there may a special keg of Lonerider’s Sweet Josie Brown Ale brewed with either peanut butter or chocolate and peanut butter. A portion of beer sales will go to support TBR.

About Triangle Beagle Rescue
Triangle Beagle Rescue is a breed-specific beagle rescue in the Triangle. They are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and are an all volunteer organization run by a Board of Directors. They do not have a shelter facility and operate solely out of foster homes.  This ensures that all of their beagles learn the skills that they need to be successful family members when they move to their forever homes.  TBR has been rescuing beagles since 1999 and, to date, have rescued more than 1500 beagles in North Carolina.  They are committed to bringing together humans and hounds for a lifetime of love and pleasure in each other’s company! Gift Ideas

Videri Chocolate Factory in Raleigh  – viderichocolatefactory.com
Videri Chocolate Factory in downtown Raleigh will be open on Valentines Day until 11pm. They are offering a complimentary glass of Champagne to enjoy while browsing their shops for chocolates to purchase. Videri also has great chocolates to give as gifts. If you plan to buy chocolates, make sure you stop by early this week to avoid the rush!

Escazu Chocolates in Raleigh – http://www.escazuchocolates.com/
Escazu is another great bean to bar chocolatier in Raleigh that has wonderful dark chocolate bars and confections. Here is a post I did about Escazu back in 2010. Again, if you plan to buy some of these great local chocolates make sure you stop by early this week. I guarantee there will be a line out the door for last minute shoppers!

IvyCottage Collections in Cary – http://www.ivycottagecollections.com/
Ivy Cottage Collections is a locally owned shop in Cary I recently learned about that specializes in unique gifts and home decor. They offer gifts like poetic monogram charms, bangles from Melinda Maria featuring 14 carat gold plated bands with clusters of turquoise stones in various designs and cashmere three-way wraps by Claudia Nichole.

Monuts Donuts in Durhamhttp://www.monutsdonuts.com/
This may sound like a strange suggestion, but I think getting a box of a dozen awesome donuts from Monuts would be a great alternative to a dozen roses. Ok, maybe it isn’t the best idea I’ve ever had, but I sure would appreciate it if I got it as a gift so maybe your significant other will too!
