The concert ”Sounds of Justice & Inclusion: Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr”, will include music by African-American composers “Duke” Ellington, Scott Joplin and William Henry Curry, jazz selections with the John Brown ‘little’ Big Band featuring Yolanda Rabun, and spirituals with the Men’s Chorus from Shaw University. 100 Men in Black will perform Lift Every Voice and Sing. The concert grand finale will be a performance of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with all performers.

“We are pleased to be sharing the joy and importance of this special day with the community” Maestro Curry said. “The best music is without prejudice and speaks to our hearts about hope, love, community, and service to one another.”

Lucettegrace ~ Contemporary Patisserie in Downtown Raleigh

Untitled

Lucettegrace – 235 South Salisbury Street – Raleigh, NC

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the opening of Lucettegrace for the past few months and I’m happy to report the wait is now over! Chef Daniel Benjamin, the celebrated former pastry chef at the five-star Herons restaurant and Umstead Hotel in Cary has opened a contemporary patisserie in downtown Raleigh at 235 S. Salisbury Street and it is FANTASTIC!

The shop opened just over a month ago and I’ve already been by several times to check it out. I’ve been introduced to more wonderful pastry creations to behold and taste on each visit as the menu continues to grow. The word pastry really doesn’t really do justice to the baked goods sold at Lucettegrace. They are more like delicious edible works of art.

Seating

I also love the layout of the shop. The atmosphere is open and warm with a nice mix of old and new. The bright yellow stools lined up along the wood counter contrast well with the two toned hardwood floor and hanging lights against the exposed brick wall. Seating is plentiful with several tables in addition to the wrap around bar along the wall and the front of the shop has floor to ceiling windows making it the perfect place to sit with a coffee and croissant and watch the world go by.

The front counter space is sleek and modern with a large glass case used to beautifully display the days offerings making is challenge to decide what to try among the field of amazing treats. So far I have tried several of the different types of croissants and eclairs. I am committed to slowly working my way through the menu of offerings. There are certain items that you can expect to find daily, while they also plan to regularly introduce new and seasonal items to keep the menu fresh and full of exciting items throughout the entire year.

One of my favorite items is the Bourbon Pecan Pie croissant. It is so decadent and sweet. I think it is the perfect item to enjoy in the morning with coffee or later in the day after a meal as a dessert after a meal. Another popular item is the Dixie Cannonball which is filled with gravy! The shop serves organic locally roasted coffee from Larry’s Beans out of Raleigh. They offer a full menu of espresso drinks in addition to cold brew and traditional drip coffee. They also have a sipping caramel which I hear is incredible!

In addition to sweet treats, Lucettegrace has also just started offering a savory menu (available after 11am). I haven’t had a chance to try these new offerings but I am sure they are just as impressive as the pastries and I look forward to enjoying lunch there soon.

  • Basque Baguette: uncured ham, idiazabal cheese, pimenton butter, pepper olive jam
  • Focaccia Pizzette Chicago: butternut squash, pheta, maple bacon onion jam, pepitas, dried cherries
  • Roasted Mushroom Quiche: cremini, oyster, shiitake, brown butter, thyme, creme fraiche
  • Mixed Lettuces: griddled crouton, herbed yoghurt cheese, candied pecans, dried cranberries
  • Grilled Cheese: sour pain de mie, carolina moon, apple butter
  • Shepherd’s: Pieharissa scented lamb, local root vegetables, potato puree

You can stay up to date on all of their current offerings by visiting their menu online.

I believe Lucettegrace has hit a home run right from the start in terms of the menu, atmosphere, and service. I expect this beautiful little shop to become a popular destination for triangle foodies and out of town visitors alike. So whether you are looking for a fun place for a morning coffee & pastry, a delicious new lunch spot, or a special place for dessert on date night – I encourage you to pay them a visit. By the way, they will be OPEN on New Year’s Day 11am-7pm.

Local Coffee: Back Alley Coffee Roasters

Back Alley Coffee Roasters – Wake Forest, NC

Did you know there is a new coffee roaster in the Triangle?  Back Alley Coffee Roasters is a small batch roaster located just north of Wake Forest in Youngsville, NC. Back Alley was started by local resident Tracy McKenzie after 10 years of home roasting and sharing his coffee with friends. I recently had the pleasure of sampling three of Back Alley’s current offerings with coffee from (Kenya, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica). I enjoyed experimenting with all three using the traditional drip, pour over and the AeroPress method. All three coffees arrived extremely fresh (just roasted days prior) and I found each made for a unique and delicious cup of coffee. The Costa Rica made for a clean cup with a smooth finish, while the Ethiopian features I slightly earthier sweeter flavor. The Kenyan was the darkest of the three roasts and I found that in addition to a great pour-over it worked great for pulling shots of espresso to make a full bodied cappuccino.

So where does the name “Back Alley Roasters” come from? As Tracy explains it, after learning of his love for coffee and several requests from coworkers one day he did a little roasting demonstration for his colleagues at work. He set up in the alleyway between two office buildings at work and while the smoke billowed from the roasting beans, they talked about the finer points of roasting over pour over coffees. Someone came out of the building and warned them that the bass was going to hear all the commotion to which somebody replied “We’re just roasting in the Back Alley!” and hence the name of Back Alley Coffee Roasters was born!

For now Back Alley Coffee can be ordered through their online shop at backalleyroasters.com or by emailing Tracy directly at  tracy (at) backalleyroasters (dot) com. As an added bonus deliveries in the Wake Forest area are free and shipping is available to other areas. I suspect you will also soon be able to find their coffee in select retail locations in the Wake Forest area in 2015. In the meantime, to learn more about Back Alley Coffee Roasters and order some of their coffee beans visit their website here. Happy brewing!

Drink Local: Fullsteam’s Coffee Pecan Porter

Fullsteam Coffee Pecan Porter

Fullsteam’s Fearrington Winter Coffee Pecan Porter

Thanks for following along on my travels in 2014. I’m already making my exploring plans for 2015 and look forward to sharing my photographs and thoughts about Triangle events with you in the new year! In the meantime, I wanted to leave you with one last recommendation as we near the Christmas holiday and the end of yet  another year. If you are looking for a last minute local gift or just a special local beer to enjoy over the holidays I recommend picking up this seasonal offering from Fullsteam Brewery in Durham. It was born out of a collaboration between Fullsteam and Fearrington Village in Chaple Hill. It is called “Fearrington Winter: Pecan Coffee Porter”. The label describes it as a “smooth and toasty porter brewed with southern pecans and Fearrington Village coffee beans.” It’s basically like Christmas magic in a bottle. I picked up this bottle at The Hop Yard in North Raleigh but you can find it in bottle shops throughout the area.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!! See you in 2015!
