Dog Parks in the Triangle

After living in Raleigh for a while I have come to realize that there are a lot of people here who have dogs.  There are several dog parks located across the Triangle where pet owners can let their dogs run free safely and legally without a leash.

Most of the locations offer separate play areas for big dogs and little dogs. Check out each town’s dog park website for specific details. Below is a quick list the current dog parks located in the area.

The Durham Performing Arts Center DPAC

If you are looking to see a Broadway musical, concert, or comedy act check out the event schedule for the new Durham Performing Arts Center known as “DPAC”. Since opening in November 2008 the art center has presented more than 150 with over 250, 000 guests in attendance. Last year the DPAC sold out over 30 shows including musical acts Leonard Cohen, Steely Dan, and Harry Connick Jr., comedians Bill Cosby and Robin Williams and an entire week of Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple. Their schedule this year includes over 175 events throughout the upcoming year.

The venue is 100,000 square feet and has 2,700 seats. There are currently 10,000 season ticket holders and gets a lot of popular shows. Recently I purchased tickets for my wife and I to see Wicked there later this spring. Although the tickets went fast and it took a lot of tries through Ticketmaster online we were finally able to nab some tickets for the upper balcony. Fortunately the layout of the theater was designed to put you close to the stage, with no seat further than 135 feet away from the action. I am looking forward to both seeing the show and getting a look at the interior design of this modern theater. Some other interesting acts coming to PAC thsi year include Chicago, Paula Deen, The Ringo Star All Star Band, and Harry Connick Jr.

If you are in the Durham area and want to take a free tour of the venue, DPAC offers a public tour the first Monday of the month. The public tour will be given by DPAC staff and begin at 11:00 am. Tours include sights of the theatre from all levels, an extraordinary view from the Mildred & Dillard Teer Stage, and a city skyline panorama from the star terrace lobby. Tours will also get a chance to see where the stars prepare for show time. For more information, check out the DPAC website here: Link

The Broad Street Cafe in Durham ~ Great Music and People!

Last night my wife and I made a visit to the Broad Street Café in Durham. Its website describes the café as a “full-service restaurant, bar and entertainment venue”. In many ways the café feels like community anchor as its customer base seems like a great mix of people of all ages. The crowd regularly includes people from older couples, college aged students, to families with young children. We have been to the café before and were really looking forward to grabbing some drinks and catching some live music. They serve many local beers on tap including Raleigh’s own Big Boss brews as well as Durham’s local Triangle Brewery beers. My personal favorite is the Triangle Winter White (a traditional Belgian Wheat Beer). They have a full menu of salads and sandwiches and they specialize in wood fired pizzas that come from a brick oven you can view from the bar.

Broad Street typically has music performances 5 nights a week ranging in styles from bluegrass to Jazz. They have a nice size stage for the performers and seating is spread out enough that you have your choice of being closer to the stage or in the back of the restaurant where you can more easily have a conversation. A regular on Sundays, and performing on the night of our visit was the Aaron Mills Project. A jazz/funk trio group featuring keyboard, drums and Aaron Mills on the electric Bass. Listening to their funky jazz jams was great. Later in the evening they welcome other musicians from the audience to join them onstage to jam so bring your instrument along if you go on a Sunday!
