There are some exciting events going on this week. With the holidays quickly approaching several of theses events are not only fun, but involve helping those in need. Below is a quick summary of events I think are worth highlighting for the week of December 3rd through the 9th. The 19th Annual Jingle Ball will take place at Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh this Thursday. Attendees are in for a night of food, drinks and fun while helping to brighten the holidays for Wake County children in need.  Guests are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for a child (newborn to age 12) valued at $20 or a $30 donation by cash or check . All toys will be donated to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Cheer Program. An invitation is NOT required to attend the Jingle Ball; anyone 21 years or older is welcome. Dress for this event is cocktail attire. Ladies, wear your cute holiday dress you have been dying to wear. Men, dress with slacks, sweaters or even your most festive holiday tie. No jeans, please!

Guglhupf Winter Market – Saturday December 8th 10am-4pm
The patio at Guglhupf comes alive on December 8th for our 4th annual Weihnachtsmarkt (Winter Market). The event, now in its fourth year, will include artists (courtesty of Outsiders Arts & Collectibles), food and live music. In addition, Lakewood Avenue Children’s School will host a book drive for Book Harvest, happymess Studio will host a craft table for children and Cassandra from Character Paints will be doing face painting! Live music provided by The Lester Fricks Band, The Bull Town Strutters and more.

On December 8th the folks at Lonerider will be having a dock release for “The Beer with No Name” & debuting their brand new tasting area! Being strong is not a choice, it’s a requirement, and giving up your name is one of the strongest things you can do. The Beer With No Name is still their holiday ale, a Belgian style Dubbel brewed with a rare Belgian yeast strain, caramelized beet sugar and festive holiday spices. Expect hints of dark fruit, sweet cinnamon-apple and a warming finish. So, why do they call this “The Beer With No Name”? And yes it used to be “Belle Starr“. More information on that coming soon….

FCS Trio Performing at The Oxford Gastropub in Raleigh, NC ~ January 30, 2011

My wife and I took advantage of the beautiful weather this past weekend and made a trip to Downtown Raleigh on Sunday.  While there, we decided to pop into The Oxford Gastropub on Fayetteville Street to have a cocktail and enjoy the smooth Jazz sounds of the Fusion Collective South Trio.  They perform each Sunday during brunch at The Oxford from around 11am-3pm.   The FCS Trio features Michael Pelz-Sherman on keys, Charles Barchuck on drums, and Sean Geist on Upright Bass.  Check out the video below for a sample of their performance on Sunday.

Sean Geist also performs with Route 66, a trio consisting of two bassists and a drummer.  Route 66 will be performing at Electric Beanz Coffee Bar in Raleigh on Friday 2/18 from 7-9pm.   For details about other upcoming gigs visit the FCS Facebook Fanpage.

Picture of the Week – Music on the patio at Uncorked!

Uncorked

This week’s picture comes from my table on the patio at Uncorked, a wine shop located in North Raleigh in the Falls River Town Center.  They hold free wine tastings each Friday and often have live music on Saturday nights out on the Patio.  On the night this photo was taken, my wife and I were enjoying a great acoustic performance by Donnie Howard.  We returned to Uncorked the following week and saw another talented act called “Attic Orchestra”.  They were a four piece band made up of a flute, stand-bass, violin, and electric guitar.  If you want to know what bands are coming to Uncorked sign up for their newsletter on their website follow them on Facebook!

2nd Annual Cuegrass Festival Returns to The Pit ~ April 17, 2010

The word on the street is that the second annual ‘Cuegrass Festival will occur on the afternoon of Saturday April 17th on the street outside The Pit at 328 W. Davie Street in downtown Raleigh.

Last year’s  Festival was  comprised of beers from LoneRider and Aviator breweries, three NC bands (Old Habits, Filmore Valley Boys and Town Mountain) as well as The Pit’s famous bbq and the “Pigs on Parade” silent auction (which features piggy banks from local artists sold to raise money for Feed the Farm, a local non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to N.C. farmers in need).

The Cuegrass Festival is a family-friendly event.  People of all ages make up the crowd and many bring lawn chairs and blankets to set up in front of the stage to relax with their kids and listen to an afternoon of great music.  You can heck the event website for more information.
