Wine 101 ~ Going For The Gold At The Beer Olympics!

DSC03687

Last night my neighbor and I made the short trip over to the “Beer Olympics” over at my favorite wine store, Wine 101 in Wake Forest. As I described in an earlier post, the event was held in honor of the lighting of the olympic torch kicking off the 2010 winter olympics in Vancouver. The field of competition consisted of a grand total of 30 different beers from six different categories (Hefeweizen, Lagers, Belgians, IPAs, Strong IPAs, and Stouts). Joe, the owner of Wine 101, and his right hand man Jason poured 2 ounce tastes of each bear from unmarked half-gallon growlers. The honorable “ tasting judges” (myself and the 50 other people there) would then score each beer in this blind taste test on a scale of 1-10.  At the end of the night the scores were to be tallied up and gold, silver, and bronze medals would be awarded in each category.

Although I didn’t plan on it, amazingly my friend and I made it through all 30 beers! This was in large part thanks to the dedicated staff at wine 101 who were working very hard to make sure everyone in the large crowd that came to the event had the opportunity to taste every beer. They were also incredibly consistent with their 2 oz. pours which went a long way to make sure you didn’t over do it and wouldn’t get worn out before making it through the catalogue of beers. As we worked our way through the many beers to taste I found that I was a big fan of the Hefeweizen and the Strong IPA’s but was not crazy about the Lagers and regular IPAs. The Jury is still out for me on the Stouts. I don’t think my palate is mature or fascinated enough to recognize a quality stout at this point! That is what year’s of drinking Coor’s Light and Corona will do to you I guess!

The “official” medal scoring is still being tallied and should be posted to their website soon,  but in the meantime I did hear that one of the Hefeweizen I liked was the locally brewed Shotgun Betty from Lone Rider Brewery. I recently had this beer on a visit to the Rialto Theater in downtown Raleigh and think a visit to the brewery is in my future.

My friend and I met some very friendly people throughout the evening as we shared our critiques of each brew and debated which beer we liked best.  As always, whether you’re looking for a bottle of wine for dinner, or just attending one of their wine or beer tasting events Wine 101 is at the top of my list of places to check out. It is not only a great wine shop (which sells great beers too), but Joe and his staff are so friendly and helpful which gives the shop a real social atmosphere with a “neighborhood store” vibe making it a great place to visit to get out and meet new people. Latest news is that the new Whole Foods on Six Forks Road in North Raleigh will open sometime during the week of March 14-18, 2011. Check back here for future updates. Or you can follow the North Raleigh Whole Foods Facebook Fan Page for the latest news and information about this store.

Update – February 9th, 2011

Sue Stock at the News and Observer is reporting that Whole Foods is holding a job fair this Saturday (2/12/11) in anticipation of the North Raleigh Whole Foods opening sometime mid March 2011 (next month!). Read her blog post here.

Original Update February 2nd, 2010

I received email confirmation today from the developer that construction on the long awaited Whole Foods grocery store in North Raleigh will break ground this Wednesday February 3, 2010 and is scheduled to open in early 2011. This project had been working its way through the rezoning process over the past year with the plan receiving approval from the Raleigh City Council back in October 2009. The 40,000 square foot Whole Foods store will serve as the anchor for Regency Center’s proposed Market at Colonnade retail center, which will include 17,000 sq/ft of additional retail space. The market will be located at Six Forks Road and Colonnade Center Drive in North Raleigh, just one mile south of I-540 (near the intersection of Six Forks & Strickland Road).

According to their website “Market at Colonnade will provide an upscale shopping experience for all of North Raleigh and will feature the first newly constructed Whole Foods in North Carolina complemented by 17,000 square feet of high-end shops and restaurants. Market at Colonnade will be Raleigh’s only LEED certified retail project, featuring lushly landscaped walking paths, outdoor seating areas, and stormwater cisterns and one of the region’s most innovative stormwater systems.”

This is big news for the residents of North Raleigh who prefer to shop at this grocer and have had no other option than to trek to the Whole Foods located on Wade Avenue all the way on the other side of the city. Having a Whole Foods in this central location of North Raleigh will no doubt be a welcome addition for those shoppers looking for another source of organic fruits, vegetables, and quality hormone free beef and poultry. With the recent opening of Trader Joe’s and now the planned future arrival of Whole Foods, the grocery shopping options in North Raleigh are only getting better. Check back here for future updates on the progress of construction and updates on the projected opening date!

Where To Find Gluten Free Pizza In Raleigh

Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. With that, things like regular pizza are usually off the menu for those with Celiac but fortunately there are “gluten free” pizza options in the Triangle.

So far I am only aware of places in Raleigh that sell gluten free pizzas, but I will update this post in the future if I discover any others. The three pizza establishments that currently sell gluten free pizza in Raleigh are Lily’s Pizza, Zpizza, and Bella Monica. I have tried the pizza from the first two and they are quite good (gluten free Zpizza pictured above).  I have not yet had the Bella Monica GF pizza but I hear it is quite good.

You can check out  local blog Gluten Free Raleigh for more information about living gluten free in the Triangle.

Take A Free Ride On The Downtown Raleigh R-Line Circulator Bus!

If you are headed to downtown Raleigh  be sure to check out the free R-Line Circulator Bus. This free bus service loops around downtown connecting the central business district and its ample parking with the restaurants, bars, and venues along Glenwood Avenue South and the lower portion of downtown by the new Convention Center and Moore Square.

The two bus system runs loops every 15 minutes with multiple stops at points of interest along the way (map). Hours of operation for the service are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. While the stops aren’t very far apart, make sure you know which one is closest to you final destination. The bus will not just stop just anywhere for you (I’ve seen people ask and get denied).

My wife and I took the bus a few times this past summer when we were visiting downtown to attend concerts in Moore Square. It was really easy finding a place to park in the big vacant government building lots along Peace Street and take the quick bus ride down to Moore square were parking can be tight and cost you a few dollars. It is also kind of fun to ride because you essentially are getting a mini-tour of downtown Raleigh and meet other folks who are out for a night on the town.

According to a recent news and observer article the R-line carried over 150,000 passengers between its inception last February 13, 2009 and December 5, 2009.  While it may not be used as often as it could, I think this is a step in the right direction for downtown Raleigh and a sign of more good things to come. I’ll see you on the bus!

Winterfest Ice Skating Rink in Raleigh’s Downtown City Plaza

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the new outdoor ice skating rink located in downtown Raleigh’s New City Plaza before it closes for the season on February 15th. The rink is situated directly across the street from the new Marriot hotel at the southern end of Fayetteville Street. It opened back on December 4th and will remain open through February 15th due to popular demand.  The rink itself is 45’ x 85’ in size and has maximum capacity of 140 skaters. The cost of admission is $6 and includes the skate rental. I spent some time in City plaza over the Holidays and was happy to see the rink getting a lot of use. It seems to be very popular with families and kids.

You can check out the Winterfest Website for special events. During the holidays they had “skate with Santa” night and also provided live music entertainment and outdoor movies some nights. They also have regular “date night specials” when Couples can show their receipt from local participating restaurants to receive a $4 discount for admission for two to the ice rink.  They also offer free carriage rides e from 6 pm-9 pm on date nights for anyone wearing their ice rink admission wristband.

On Valentine’s Day Sunday, February 14 complimentary rickshaw and carriage rides will be offered from 5 pm-9 pm to anyone who has paid for admission to the rink.  These rickshaw rides will begin in the 400 block of Fayetteville Street and will circle around the Capitol.  According to the Winterfest website, the rickshaws will provide romantic music, a rose, and a blanket to keep you warm.
