2013 – My Year of Running in the Triangle

Shelley Lake North Raleigh

Trail at Shelley Lake in North Raleigh

I will always remember 2013 as the year I became a “runner”. Just a year ago the longest distance I had ever run was 5 miles and that was a challenge. Back then the thought of running a full marathon seemed inconceivable to me. Somewhere along the way I was bitten by the run bug and got serious about my training.

Big Boss Beer Run Club

Big Boss Run Club

While I enjoying running solo, I also had a wonderful time this year running with social run clubs like the Big Boss Run Club and River Run Club. Both are excellent free weekly social run clubs that welcome runners of all levels.  I learned so much from running with these groups. It was nice preparing for races with others who were going through the same process and getting advice from more seasoned runners along the way.

2013 Race Medals

2013 Race Results
As year draws to a close I am proud to look back on 2013 and the three races I completed:

Tobacco Road Half Marathon – March 2013
Tobacco Road was my first “real race”. The course was nice and flat with crushed gravel the majority of the way along the Tobacco Road Greenway. My training program capped out at 10 miles and it took everything I had just to finish and I was starting to fade at the end of the race. Afterwards I knew that if I was ever going to run a full marathon I would have to train smarter.

Time: 1 hour 53 minutes 32 seconds

Tar Heel 10 Miler – April 2013
I ran my fastest of all three races in the 10-miler. Not so much because it was the shortest distance of the three, but because I didn’t have a GPS watch yet and ran with a 8:30 min/mile pace group that actually ended up running a faster 8:00 min/mile. I knew it felt fast but I hung with the group and finished with a much better time than I expected. The hills were tough but running through downtown Chapel Hill was beautiful.

Time: 1 hour 21 minutes 20 seconds

City Of Oaks Marathon – November 2013
As my first ever full marathon, the City of Oaks was by far my most challenging race. I took my training seriously and followed a six month training program I cobbled together after researching several popular beginner marathon programs online. I went into the race injury free and excited to take on the challenge. The day of the race was beautiful and I will always remember the sense of accomplishment I felt when I crossed the finish line.

While I had trained hard, ultimately I found I was slightly unprepared for the numerous  hills along the marathon course – don’t ever let anybody tell you Raleigh is not hilly! After feeling good for the first 3 hours of the race I hit “the wall” around mile 21. I needed to take a few walking breaks by mile 23 but was able to punch through and finish strong with a time I am very proud of.

Looking back, I learned several valuable lessons about training and nutrition from the experience of preparing and running in my first marathon. With the benefit this experience I have a new perspective and look forward to coming back even stronger in 2014 with the goal of finishing the marathon in under 4 hours.

Time: 4 hours 9 minutes 6 seconds

Raleigh Krispy Kreme Challenge

Running in the Krispy Kreme Challenge on Hillsborough Street

Looking Ahead
I took it relatively easy during the months of November and December following the City of Oaks Marathon, but now I am looking ahead to the Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon in Raleigh on April 13, 2014. There is a full marathon option too, but I plan on running 2-3 halfs in 2014 followed by a return to the City of Oaks full marathon in the fall of 2014. By the way, if your new year’s resolutions include plans for signing up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh race you can save $10 off registration by using the discount code “TRIEXPLORERAL10”. This code will work as long as you register before April 6, 2014 and is good for both the full and half marathon.

My 2014 Running Goals
1. Earn my Big Boss Run Club t-shirt! (Need to run 15 times with the club)
2. Run 1,000 miles by December 31, 2014
3. Complete a Half Marathon in under 1 hour 50 minutes
4. Return to the City of Oaks Marathon and finish in under 4 hours.

Thank You
As I turn the page on my 2013 running experience and look forward to 2014 I’d like to give a special thanks to Jon Odgers of the Big Boss Run Club for the many helpful training tips he shared over the year. If you are a runner and enjoy craft beer I highly recommend following his blog and posts on twitter at @beerandracing. I would also like to thank the great people at the River Run Club in North Raleigh @riverrunclub. They are a fantastic group of fun people to run with. I look forward to many runs with both groups in the new year. Happy running in 2014!

A Home Chef’s Paradise – Learning to Cook at Whisk in Cary

Cooking Class at Whisk

Earlier this month I attended a soup making demonstration class at Whisk, a new locally-owned cookware & bakeware shop located in Cary’s Waverly Place shopping center. Whisk is more than just a retail store offering just about everything a home cook needs, they also host numerous cooking classes throughout the week. The classes offered include skill building, demonstration and hands-on participation style formats with trained professional instructors who have a passion for food and cooking.

photo

Class Participation

I was at Whisk to take a class to learn how to make soup. The cooking classes are held in a full sized kitchen located in the back of the store with students sitting right in on the action. There are several chairs located around the kitchen counter where the instructor works in addition to several high-top tables with director like chairs providing a nice view for students to watch.

Soup Making Class at Whisk

The class setting and interaction with the chef makes it feel like you are attending a fun and intimate cooking show complete with small cameras installed in the kitchen ceiling that capture the chef at work from multiple angles that is then displayed on a flat screen tv on the kitchen wall. This allows the entire class to see what is happening during each step no matter where you sit making sure you don’t miss a thing.

Italian Sausage, White Bean, and Kale Soup – Porcini Bisque – Pasta Fagiole with Pancetta

The soups we learned to make in class were Porcini Bisque, Pasta Fagiole with Pancetta, and Italian sausage, White Bean, and Kale soup. The instructor took us through each step of adding the ingredients and provided helpful tips along the way. The classes are very social and interactive with the chef answering questions as they prepare the dish and inviting students up to the stove to help cook. It is a very comfortable learning environment and I felt like I was learning to cook from a friend while they worked in their home kitchen.

Sampling the Results!

Throughout the class students can sip on complimentary glasses of wine and enjoy light hors d’oeuvre. Of course once the soups were done we also had the chance to try each turning the evening into a fun tasting party as the class wrapped up.

photo_1

Trying the Soup

There was plenty of soup for the class to try and you could pour yourself a bowl, cup, or just a small sample. I wanted to try them all and enjoy some of the salad prepared to accompany the soups so I opted for the smaller sample serving. All three were excellent by my favorites were the Pasta Fagiole and the Italian Sausage, White Bean, and Kale Soup. I liked that the classes provide a printed handout that includes the recipe and cooking instructions making it easy for you to then go home and recreate what you learned.

Retail area of Whisk

After the class ended I had a chance to browse the retail area of the store.  Whisk has diverse array of merchandise that covers everything from food preparation to presentation. For me the most important  aspect of Whisk is that they have a friendly and knowledgeable staff that can help you find what you are looking for and explain how to use it.

photo_8

Kitchen Supplies

I enjoyed browsing all the fun go-to gadgets, and one-of-a kind items you can find at Whisk and I really liked that the items were competitively priced too. I found quite a few gift ideas. I was looking for a Christmas gift to get for my father. He recently installed a bar at my parents house and was excited to find Whisk had the “King Ice Cube Tray”. This specialty ice tray makes large square ice cubes prefect for the home bartender. I also noticed they had a nice lineup of coffee equipment and even sell locally roasted Muddy Dog Coffee beans. That will be my next purchase!

Cooking Supplies

Dan Saklad along with his wife and business partner Diana, opened Whisk with the hopes it would be “a destination for cooks, foodies, chefs and gadget hounds in the Triangle.” I think they have succeeded in their goal. I encourage you to support this locally owned store and consider them the next time you need something for your home kitchen or a gift for a foodie friend. The cooking classes are a lot of fun and also make for great gifts too. For more information about Whisk and to view their upcoming cooking class schedule, visit www.whiskcarolina.com.

Zinburger Now Open at The Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham!

ZinBurger Logo_4C

Earlier this month I was invited to attend a early preview of the new ZinBurger Wine & Bruger Bar at the Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham in advance of its Grand Opening on December 10th.

The sneak peek featured samples of most of their menu items including slider sized versions of their signature burgers as well as samples of their salads, fries, deserts, and cocktails. There were several other local bloggers in attendance that evening and I was lucky enough to run into and dine with my friend and fellow travel and foodie blogger The Wandering Sheppard.

Zinburger ~ Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham

The Zinburger restaurant fills the space formerly occupied by the Rockfish Grill. They have updated the interior to have a casual yet modern and upbeat flare featuring rich wood and earth tones. There is also an interesting mural of cows grazing in a green pasture under a cloudy but blue sky along one wall of the dining area that provides a splash of bright color. The restaurant has 11 HD televisions located throughout the space features a nice open air patio with an outdoor fire pit with lounge seating and dining tables to enjoy during the warmer months.

burger3

El Diablo Burger

As you can imagine  Zinburger is known for its gourmet burgers which range from $9-$15. Each is made with either Certified Angus Beef or American-style Kobe beef ground fresh twice a day right there at the restaurant. Their Signature burgers include the Zinburger with manchego cheese & zinfandel braised onions and the Kobe Burger with vermont cheddar & wild mushrooms. I enjoyed the El Diablo burger (pictured above) with its fire roasted jalapeños, pepperjack cheese, caramelized onions & chipotle mayo.

burger8

Napa Salad

If beef isn’t your thing they have other menu offerings like a veggie or turkey burger, ahi sandwich, and five different salads ranging in price from $5-$12. My favorite was the Napa Salad which has organic greens, dried fruit, marcona almonds & goat cheese vinaigrette. Chicken and ahi can be added to any salad for an additional charge.

Weekly Specials

One thing I always look for at restaurants is the weekly food and drink specials they offer. Zinburger has done a nice job of offering some great deals throughout the week.  Wednesdays they offer half-price bottles of wine and “Happy Thursdays” provide an all day happy hour with  $5 “Plain and Simple Burgers”, half-price sides and discounts on cocktails.

burger12

Kentuck Smash Cocktail

Zinburger has  a full bar with cocktails, 17 beer selections including 8 on tap and a wine menu that includes 23 varieties priced from $5 to $15 a glass.   I tried some of their sangria and a drink called the “Kentuck Smash” (pictured above) made with Jim Beam Bourbon, Mint, Angostura, Lemon. The drink was quite nice and went down smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. I did notice a few local beers on tap, and hope they consider adding a few more to feature additional local brewers.

burger10

Bar Area

In addition to the main entrees,  side selections include hand-cut fries, sweet potato fries, zucchini fries, onion rings, coleslaw, cottage cheese and double truffle fries. I had the opportunity to try the regular and truffle fries. While tasty they were fairly typical of fries I have had at similar venues. The truffle fries were my favorite. The dessert menu features old fashioned, hand-dipped shakes, floats and malts as well as banana cream and chocolate cream pies. I had samples of each with my favorite being the salted caramel shake.

burger6

Outdoor Patio Seating

As mentioned above, there is a cool outdoor seating area complete with comfy chairs and fire pits to warm you on cool nights. I think Zinburger serves up a solid burger and is an excellent addition to the mall. They are open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 10 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 11 pm. You can view their full menu here.
