Drink Local: Fullsteam’s Coffee Pecan Porter

Fullsteam Coffee Pecan Porter

Fullsteam’s Fearrington Winter Coffee Pecan Porter

Thanks for following along on my travels in 2014. I’m already making my exploring plans for 2015 and look forward to sharing my photographs and thoughts about Triangle events with you in the new year! In the meantime, I wanted to leave you with one last recommendation as we near the Christmas holiday and the end of yet  another year. If you are looking for a last minute local gift or just a special local beer to enjoy over the holidays I recommend picking up this seasonal offering from Fullsteam Brewery in Durham. It was born out of a collaboration between Fullsteam and Fearrington Village in Chaple Hill. It is called “Fearrington Winter: Pecan Coffee Porter”. The label describes it as a “smooth and toasty porter brewed with southern pecans and Fearrington Village coffee beans.” It’s basically like Christmas magic in a bottle. I picked up this bottle at The Hop Yard in North Raleigh but you can find it in bottle shops throughout the area.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!! See you in 2015!

Shop Local: The Gift of Local Coffee

Untitled

Jubala Village Coffee in North Raleigh

If you have followed my blog for while you know I am a big fan of coffee and enjoy frequenting the many great local coffee shops we have here in the Triangle. As we approach the holidays I wanted to share that local coffee shops are also a great source of gifts for the coffee geek in your life. Most shops sell bags of fresh locally roasted coffee and home coffee brewing equipment like pour over cones, mugs, and coffee servers. If you aren’t sure what to get another convenient option is a gift card.  Your local coffee shop is a great way to shop local. Below is a quick list of some of my “go to” places for local coffee, home brewing gear, and gift cards.

Local Coffee Shops – Gift Cards Available
Brew Coffee Bar – Downtown Raleigh
Bean Traders – Durham
Cafe’ de los Muertos – Downtown Raleigh
Caffe Driade – Chapel Hill
Cocoa Cinnamon* – Durham
Jubala Village Coffee* – North Raleigh
Open Eye Cafe* – Carrboro
Sola Coffee Cafe* – North Raleigh
Well Bean Coffee – Wake Forest

* = Home coffee brewing equipment also available.

The Not So Normal 5K + Weekend ~ Carrboro & Chapel Hill Family-Friendly Festivities

nn5k

The minds behind Mom in Chapel Hill bring you the inaugural Not So Normal 5k + Weekend. A weekend long celebration of Community and Philanthropy, with a little exercise thrown in. It will be fun, it will be memorable, and it will be anything but predictable.

Not So Normal 5K & Weekend Celebration
This three-day celebration of community and philanthropy, kicks off Sept. 12 and introduces a family-friendly lineup of activities in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, all culminating with a festive 5K race and outdoor country music concert Sunday, Sept. 14. From date nights for parents to babysitting options and pajama parties for the kids, there will be a variety of events for the community to enjoy all while helping raise money for deserving charities. The best part, unlike other races, 100 percent of proceeds from all 5K registration fees goes directly to nonprofits. Learn more about each event and the nonprofit beneficiaries.

EVENT DETAILS

  • Friday and Saturday Night (Sept. 12 and 13)
Kids’ parties each night, babysitting options, restaurant specials, comedy shows, outdoor movie and a Carrboro Art Walk, “Meet the Merchants.”
  • Sunday Morning (Sept. 14)
The Not So Normal 5K race…well, not quite 5K. We shortened to 2.95 miles to make it flatter and a little easier. Why? Because it’s not so normal! Active families will run or walk this fun run, and strollers are welcome on the course. Registration is just $25 and all proceeds go directly to charity. Participants are also asked to bring one book for Book Harvest and/or two canned goods for local food distribution organizations, TABLE and PORCH. Kids’ races, obstacles, face painting and tons of family-fun activities. Children 8 and under are free!
  • Sunday Night (Sept. 14)
Frankie Ballard Live Presented by 94.7 QDR and The Not So Normal 5K + Weekend. Hosted at University Mall in Chapel Hill, the outdoor concert will feature rising country music star Frankie Ballard, and opening acts Casey Jamerson, Stereosparks and The BuzzTown Band, and DSI Comedy Theater getting the crowd ready to rock. The concert benefits The ArtsCenter, NC Children’s Promise and Kidzu Children’s Museum. Tickets are $9.47 and can be purchased online here.

CONCERT TICKET GIVEAWAY

  • The organizers of this event have been kind enough to offer two free tickets to Triangle Explorer readers for the outdoor concert Sunday Night featuring country music star Frankie Ballard presented by 94.7 QDR. To enter this free drawing simply leave a comment below or share this post on twitter and I will randomly select and email the winner on Friday August 29th.
