Jubala Village Brings Great Coffee to North Raleigh!

Jubala Village Coffee Bar constructed with reclaimed wood

Coffee fans rejoiced last week as Jubala Village Coffee quietly opened its doors in the new Lafayette Village shopping center off Falls of Neuse Road in North Raleigh.  This new coffee shop fills a huge void in the North Raleigh local coffee scene and does it extremely well.  Although they have only been open a little over a week, I’ve already stopped by three times and continue to be impressed with each visit.

They serve locally roasted Counter Culture Coffee and have plans for a food menu that will focus on local suppliers of organic and sustainable farming products.  The folks at Jubala are easing into their new space by starting off with a limited coffee menu that features several single origin coffees and serving liege belgian waffles, with plans to expand the coffee selections and offer additional food items in the coming weeks.

Pour Over Coffee Method used at Jubala

One of the first things you will notice during your visit is the way the baristas prepare single cups of coffee at Jubala.  Individual cups are freshly brewed to order.  They grind the beans for each order and offer brewing either by “pour over” method or using a french press.  It is impressive to watch the care that goes into creating the perfect cup of coffee using the pour over method and also allows time to chat with the barista and learn about the brewing process.

The staff is very knowledgeable about what the shop offers, where the beans come from, the different farms that grow the coffee.  They friendly and eager to answer any questions you have. I get the nice feeling that they not only want you to enjoy your coffee, they also want you to understand who and where it came from.

My Cappuccino

Of course, they also have an espresso maker, and on my very first visit I had a cappuccino that was prepared to perfection and tasted delicious.  On my second visit I experimented a little by trying a vanilla latte made from vanilla purchased from their neighbors at the Savory Spice Shop.   The Latte was also fantastic with just the right amount of vanilla flavor yet not overly sweet.

Waffle

Liegen Belgian Waffle & Single Origin Counter Culture Coffee

My third visit was an early morning stop so I treated myself to cup of a single origin coffee from Bolivia. The cup was brewed using the pour over method and during the minute or two it took to brew they were able to quickly prepare my very first liege belgian waffle.

The waffles are made with yeast dough instead of batter and have the perfect balance of a toasty outside with a feather light inside with a wonderful slight crunch from the pearl sugar used. The waffles are made in various flavors including cinnamon, blueberry, and chocolate chip.  I believe they have plans to expand the food menu in the coming weeks to include things like sandwiches, mixed greens, and locally made desert pastries.

Spacious Seating Area

In addition to the great coffee, the atmosphere at Jubala is very inviting and spacious.  The coffee bar area has a high ceiling and a nice layout that flows well into the larger seating area.  The seating features cozy tables for two and larger wooden tables with stools that can seat larger groups.

A rustic looking bench constructed out of reclaimed wood that runs the length of one wall.  Some of this same wood is used along the coffee bar in the front which adds a lot of character to the space. You can tell the layout was designed with making Jubala a place not only for relaxing with a nice cup of coffee, but to also serve as a place for folks in the community to connect with one another.

Jubala is a great place to sit quietly and enjoy by yourself, run in to grab a quick cup to go, or stay to meet and make new friends. I plan on being a regular here and am already looking forward to my next visit. Picture of the Week – Cheese Plate from Vinos Finos y Picadas

vinos1

The subject of this week’s picture is a small cheese plate I enjoyed during a recent visit to Vinos Finos y Picadas located in the new Lafayette Village Shopping Center in North Raleigh off Falls of Neuse Road. Vino’s is a South American wine cafe’ that features wines primarily from Argentina and Chile.  They also offer a nice selection of meat and cheese plates in along and other “picadas” (an Argentine plate meaning “bites”) to accompany their wines.  This particular plate was $9 and came with five different cheeses along with fresh bread and a piece of dried pear, appricot, date, and fig. I plan to go back to Vino’s soon to enjoy some of the wine “flights” that they offer during the week.

Picture of the Week – Music on the patio at Uncorked!

Uncorked

This week’s picture comes from my table on the patio at Uncorked, a wine shop located in North Raleigh in the Falls River Town Center.  They hold free wine tastings each Friday and often have live music on Saturday nights out on the Patio.  On the night this photo was taken, my wife and I were enjoying a great acoustic performance by Donnie Howard.  We returned to Uncorked the following week and saw another talented act called “Attic Orchestra”.  They were a four piece band made up of a flute, stand-bass, violin, and electric guitar.  If you want to know what bands are coming to Uncorked sign up for their newsletter on their website follow them on Facebook!

Wine Tasting at Uncorked in North Raleigh!

DSC04614

Uncorked is a new wine shop located in the Falls River Shopping center just off of Durant Road in North Raleigh.  It opened up just before the Christmas holiday and my wife and I have been meaning to check it out.   A few weeks ago we met some friends there to take part in one of their free Friday night wine tasting events and we had a fantastic time trying new wines and meeting the owner.   The store has a warm rustic interior reminiscent of a tasting room you might experience at a vineyard in Napa Valley, complete with, rocks adorning the walls by the tasting bar in the back and decorative wood beams overhead with a large chandelier illuminating the shop.

While speakingwith the friendly owner and he explained that they typically have a free wine tasting every Friday night from 5:30-7:30pm.   These usually involve a mix of four to five red and white wines that you can sample with 2 ounce pours.  They also offer some great cheese plates that you can purchase to compliment the wines you are trying.  While my wife and I aren’t wine aficionados by any means, we really enjoy venturing out to these events because wine tasting is a great way to get exposed to new and exciting varieties of wines and discover new favorites.  It is also an excellent opportunity to meet new people as we have noticed folks are very friendly at these types of events and it is easy to strike up a conversation with strangers and share stories about favorite wines and vineyards you have visited.

In addition to their excellent wine selection the unique appeal of Uncorked is the fact that they have roughly 48 wines on hand that you can sample any day of the week.  They have these nifty automated sampling stations that dispense samples of their various wines in portions ranges from a “taste” to a half or full glass. You pay for the samples from these stations by using a pre-paid debit card that you can get at the store. Their is a digital display at each wine station with information on how much each taste costs and when you insert your tasting card it give you a status on your available balance.   It is a fun way to try a whole host of wines and test out wines before you buy a whole bottle to drink at home or give as a gift.

Recently the folks at Uncorked added an outside patio with tables with umbrellas for customers to sit at while they enjoy wine at the shop.  They even have musical entertainment on select weekend nights usually featuring acoustic guitar music.  For more information about Uncorked you can check out their website.  They also have a mailing list you can sign up for at the shop to be notified about the wines they will be tasting each Friday night and other upcoming special events. Durant Nature Park ~ North Raleigh’s Hidden Gem

Right now the cold of winter is upon us, but Spring will be here before you know it and people will be headed back outdoors to the many parks and trails in the area. A few years ago I discuvered the Durant Nature Park in North Raleigh. I couldn’t believe this park is just 5 minutes from my house . It truly is an amazing escape from the surrounding suburban area! The park is 237-acres and has 2 small lakes and Five miles of trails to explore. There are different recreational and picnic facilities and open air lodges there and that can be reserved for events like a child’s birthday party.

While taking the easy 1.5 mile hike around the lake you will likely see deer in the forest and turtles sunning on logs in the lake. Some of the trails are wide have a gravel base while others are more narrow bumpy with lots of roots under your feet, but it is a great place to go for a walk in the woods. This park is very convenient to folks living in Bedford, Falls River, and Durant Trails. Below are a few quick pictures that I snapped while we were there. If you want to read more about the Duran Trails Nature Park and the events offered there check out these links Durant Nature Park | Features and newsobserver.com | Take A Child Outside
