The Magic of The Paperhand Puppet Intervention

pp1

If you are looking for something different to do this weekend I suggest catching a performance by the Paperhand Puppet Intervention. This has been on my Triangle bucket list for years and I finally had the chance to catch them last weekend. The group uses diverse styles of puppetry and artistic expression to create shows that inspire and promote social change. Performances feature giant puppets, masks, multi person marionettes, shadow puppetry, and stilt dancing to create magical larger than life characters to tell a thoughtful and entertaining story.

PP3

I saw them perform their latest production, The Beautiful Beast, Paperhand’s seventeenth annual summer pageant. The show explores the relationship between humans, the earth that supports us, and “the beasts” of the natural world and how they are viewed through different lenses as both creatures to fear and adore. In addition to the elaborate visuals of the puppets and masks a critical and equally impressive part of each performance is the live original music performed by a six person band right in front of the audience. Not only do they provide a great score to the show, they are also the source of sound effects and provide narration and vocals throughout the numbers.

PP2

This year’s production opened at Chapel Hill’s Forest Theatre last week and runs each weekend with shows Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through September 5th. After that the show will move to NCMA in Raleigh (Sept. 9–11) followed by The Carolina Theatre of Greensboro (Sept. 17–18). I highly recommend catching the show at the Forest Theater as the outdoor setting under the trees is wonderful and really adds a lot to the overall experience.

PP5

Tickets for the Forest Theater performances are only available at the door and are sold on a first come first serve basis. Seating is general admission with suggested ticket donations of $15 for adults and $8 for children. Nobody is turned due to lack of funds. For more information vist http://paperhand.org/.

Help East Durham Pie Company Open a Cafe

East Durham Pie1

Ali Rudel launched the East Durham Pie Company out of her certified kitchen in Durham back in October 2015 and her pies have been a huge hit across the Triangle ever since. You might have come across her delicious pies at businesses around Durham or maybe you’ve seen her at at one of the regular Pop-Up Slice Shops at Ponysaurus Brewing Company every Tuesday evening. I was lucky enough to catch her selling pies at a weekend market in North Raleigh at Sola Coffe a few months ago. I liked the pie so much I made a special trip to Durham a few weeks later to buy some more. I’m not alone. Sometimes the pies sell out within just a few hours at the weekly Pop-Ups.

In order to keep up with growing demand East Durham Pie Company is planning to open a cafe and bakery in the commercial district of Old East Durham. They’ve launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help offset equipment costs and some of the expenses associated with up-fitting the space. Once open the plan is to offer locally roasted coffee, tea, the seasonally-inspired handmade sweet pies, savory meat and veggie pies, breakfast pies, simple salads, soups and other baked goods. Even better, launching the cafe will create more jobs and East Durham Pie Co. is a Durham Living Wage Project certified employer committed to paying their employees a living wage.

If you would like to learn more about East Durham Pie Company or contribute to their kickstarter campaign (just 12 days to go!) visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/454773711/a-neighborhood-cafe-for-east-durham-pie-co.

Grabbagreen coming to North Hills

green2

As a food blogger I’m always on the lookout for healthy dining options. I was excited to recently learn that Grabbagreen, an Arizona-based fast-casual restaurant concept known for their fresh and healthy alternative to fast food, plans to open their first Triangle location in Raleigh this September in North Hills. The restaurant will be located Lassiter District side of North Hills near Sur La Table.  There are also plans for a second location to open in Cary in 2017.

Grabbagreen brings a much needed healthy dining option to this part of Raleigh. The company focus on making fast food, healthy and promotes an “Eat Clean, Grabbagreen” philosophy by serving a selection of grain and green-based bowls with fresh hormone-free and antibiotic-free proteins provided by local farms, fresh-pressed juice, handcrafted smoothies and acai bowls, breakfast and healthy kid-friendly items. Everything  prepared fresh, made-to-order. Gluten-free options are also available.

Green 3For more information about their full menu visit www.grabbagreen.com. To keep tabs on progress of their North Hills location you can follow their local handles on twitter, facebook, and instagram. I will also be posting updates here as they get closer to opening and plan to share a full review of the North Hills location once it opens it doors this Fall.
