There is still a lot of summer left before us, but for those of you gearing up for fall race season you may already be looking ahead to your races scheduled for October and November. I’m registered to run in the Bull City Race Fest in Durham and have already begun my 12 week half marathon training program. I was recently selected along with several other local runners to be a race ambassador for event. In the coming weeks I will be periodically updating you about the race day activities and sharing about fun local run clubs and interesting places to train around the triangle.

The Sir Walter Miler Returns August 7th

Have you ever watched somebody run a sub-4 minute mile? Breaking the 4 minute barrier is amazing accomplishment in the running world and on Friday, August 7th, you’ll have a chance to watch some of the best local and national elite runners attempt this incredible feat. 

The event is called the Sir Walter Miler and it takes place on the track next Friday at Meredith College in Raleigh. This year’s event will be even bigger and better than 2014 with 33 men and women elite runners, including two Olympians. The event will also feature a “run store battle” and “run club relay” with some of your favorite local runners going head to head in a friendly competition.

The public is welcome to watch and cheer on the runners as well as attend a pre and post party at Raleigh Brewing Company, where there will be six breweries contributing kegs to raise money for The Umstead Coalition. There will also be food for sale by two great local food trucks: Hanu and CockADoodleMoo.

Midtown Grille Hosts Fundraiser to Benefit Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church

On August 23, Raleigh’s Midtown Grille will hold a large fundraiser to benefit the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, site of the recent tragic shooting. The event, called North Cooks South, will be a Chef Collaboration Dinner and all proceeds will be distributed through the church’s charity directly to the victims.

“This shooting was a horrific event and really hit home as I lived in Charleston for four years and drove past this church every morning on my way in to work,” says Midtown Grille Executive Chef Benjamin Harris. “An exciting lineup of chefs from some of Raleigh and Charleston’s finest restaurants will prepare wonderful food and drinks to enjoy and guests can relax to some outstanding live music. This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to a community that’s really hurting right now.”

Date: Sunday, August 23 | Cocktail Hour at 5pm, Dinner at 6pm

Tickets: Tickets will be $150 and are available starting 7/27/15 through Eventbrite.com. Up to 100 guests can be accommodated.

Dinner: There will be nine courses of authentic Low Country, Charleston cuisine. Each chef will prepare two courses with Midtown Grille’s Sous Chef, Bryan Squires providing the dessert course. Midtown Grille’s Sommelier Max Trujillo will be doing wine and cocktail pairings.

Johnny Cash Tribute Band this Thursday at Oak City 7

There is some great music to be heard this week in Raleigh. The Johnny Folsom 4 (Johnny Cash Tribute Band) is scheduled to perform this Thursday at the Oak City 7 concert series and I’m pretty stoked about it. If you’ve never been to one of the shows at Oak City 7 here’s what you need to know. Oak City 7 is a FREE summer concert series located in City Plaza (at the end of Fayetteville Street) in downtown Raleigh. Admission is free to the public and the events take place from 5:00pm to 10:30pm (rain or shine) every other Thursday, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

There are typically 3-4 bands with openers starting around 6pm and the headlining act at 9pm. Local craft beer is available for purchase and there are usually several great local food trucks. The event is pet friendly (dogs must be on a leash). You can bring a chair to relax, but there is also plenty of room for dancing.

Natural Selections: Wake County Science and Brewers Expo

Drink beer among the dinosaurs! Join the brewers of Wake County at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh for a one-of-a-kind evening of beer and science. At this sampling session, held Friday, August 21 from 7 to 10pm, more than a dozen brewers will offer unique creations fitting the Museum’s natural science focus. You can also sit in on discussions about fermentation, flavors and the future of beer, and take home a free commemorative glass — a 7oz Midland taster. Don’t miss this opportunity to sample amazing local beers and even some brand new brews!
