Fullsteam Brewery – Durham, NC

Untitled
I’m a big fan of the Triangle beer scene and one of my favorite local places to enjoy a pint is Fullsteam Brewery in Durham.  The brewery was opened by Sean Wilson, known as the “Chief Executive Optimist”, in a former 7Up bottling plant on Rigsbee Avenue back in 2009. It’s described as a “plow to pint” operation with a mission to craft the distinctly Southern beer that celebrates agriculture by using local seasonal ingredients while  fostering relationships with local farmers.

To me Fullsteam is much more than just a great brewery. When I visit the taproom the first thing that comes to my mind is community.  On any given visit you will find the space alive with activity and conversation. During the day you are likely see large groups of friends, families with their kids, and people with dogs gathered at the large communal picnic tables inside the spacious interior. As the day transitions into evening the crowd shifts over to primarily adults and all of Rigsbee Avenue seems to come to life.

I’ve enjoyed my fair share of pints sitting at one of the many orange tables inside.  There are also a few tables outside along the sunlit alley and two more tables out front in the area where the food trucks usually set. Check out With so much seating it easy to find a spot to sit and relax with your beer and food. Fullsteam is also simply a great spot to just sit back and people watch. There is a small stage that plays host to music on occasion on weekends, but for the most part the brewery serves as a community gathering space – a place for conversation over a good beer.

The beer offerings at the bar a very diverse and range from classics like a traditional American IPA to seasonal southern beers inspired by local agriculture like a sweet potato lager and a “Hogwash” hickory smoked brown porter. Fullsteam is know for making some interesting brews and they even feature beers from other local breweries on a few “guest taps”. Beers are available by the pint, half pint, tasting flights, and they even do growler fills.

As you first enter the brewery through the large red warehouse door you pass through a fun room filled with several classic arcade games along with a pinball machine and ping pong table. I think this room captures the youthful spirit of the brewery and further galvanizes the communal atmosphere.  On a given week the taproom plays hosts to events like belly dancing, trivia and yoga. There is even a run club that meets there each Wednesday.

Whether you are a casual beer drinker or a diehard craft beer enthusiasts I highly recommend a visit to Fullsteam during your next visit to the Bull City. Check out there event calendar before heading over to find out what is going on in the taproom and what food trucks will be parked there that evening. If you are thinking of heading over tonight (5/16) they are holding their Summer Basil release party starting around 6pm.

bigboss1

The Big Boss Run Club held its first group run back on May 10th, 2011. Organized by a group of friends with a shared passion for running and craft beer,  Jon Odgers, Win Bassett, Greg Mulholland, and Ben Gaddy created what has become one of the most popular brewery supported run clubs in the Triangle. This Tuesday, May 13th at 6:30pm the club will celebrate it’s  3rd Anniversary with a special celebration including raffle prizes, food trucks, great beer, and of course plenty of running with friends.

As usual Jon Odgers, also know as @beerandracing, will be there Tuesday night to kickoff the group run at 7pm. The run offers a choice of 3,4,5 or 6 mile routes that can be easily adjusted to the distance of your choice.  To mark the special occasion the evening will also include  free raffle drawings for cool swag from Big Boss and a gift certificate for the Great Outdoor Provision Company. The race director for the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon will be on hand with a special one night special registration offer and The nOg Run Club will also be selling raffle tickets and taking donations for The Runners Remembered Fund. In addition to the normal $3 Tuesday special and the full Big Boss lineup, the 3rd anniversary celebration will feature a special draft selection pulled from the Big Boss cellar for runners to enjoy! Three great local food trucks will be at the Brewery Tuesday night offering food for sale to hungry runners. I have been going to the Big Boss Rub Club for three years now and I credit the fun atmosphere of this group with helping me discover the friendly running culture of the Triangle. This is a great group of people that is welcoming to runners of all levels. Whether you are new to running or an experienced runner looking for a group of fun people to run with, I highly recommend you stop by Big Boss for a Tuesday evening run soon. Four organic bread offerings the week of May 12th – 16th

Levain ($6) – A two pound, moist, naturally leavened french country style bread made with stone milled, boulted Red Turkey wheat and Spelt. Delicate tang and heirloom wheat flavor make an excellent keeping bread

Seeded ($6) – Levain with flax, sesame, and sunflower seeds. This loaf is hearty and full of flavor.

Baguette ($3) – Our take on the classic form made with heirloom Red Turkey wheat flour and toasted corn meal to create a crisp, light, flavorful bread.

Rye ($6) – 100% NC grown heirloom Wren’s Abruzzi Rye. A dense Scandinavian style bread using rye that has been grown in NC since colonial times. A rich and meaty flavor on this bread with flax, sesame, and sunflower seeds. Traditionally stored in root cellars, it keeps for weeks wrapped tight and stored in the fridge. Perfect sliced thin with butter and smoked fish.

Boulted Bread

Boulted Bread is in the process of renovating a spot for their bakery at 614 W. South Street in downtown Raleigh. This is over by the historic Boylan Heights neighborhood. I’m keeping my ear to the ground for the official grand opening, but in the meantime you can enjoy their fresh baked breads each week through the bread share program and Saturdays at the Rebus Works Saturday Market.
