Running in the Triangle ~ A Look Back & The Road Ahead in 2015

The Upper Neuse Greenway

The Upper Neuse Greenway

This past weekend I ventured out for a brisk Saturday morning run on the Neuse Greenway and used that time alone to reflect on the past year of running. Looking back, 2014 was a fun year of running. I completed my second half marathon in April running in the first inaugural Rock n’ Roll Raleigh Half Marathon and achieved my goal of a sub-4 hour marathon finish in my second attempt at the City of Oaks Marathon in November. I even participated in the Sir Walter Miler event in August logging in my fastest single mile ever at 6 minutes 30 seconds. That may not be fast for some, but for me it was a huge accomplishment!

Big Boss Run Club

Along the way I made some great new running friends at my two favorite local run clubs, the Big Boss Run Club & the River Run Club and managed to explore many new parts of Raleigh as I trained on miles and miles of the city greenway system. My favorite stretches right now are the Upper Neuse Greenway from Falls Dam to the WRAL Soccer Park (6.5 Miles) and the trails leading from Shelly Lake all the way down to Meredith College (also about 6.5 miles).

Running in Raleigh On a Cold January Day

As I look ahead to 2015 I have my sights set on more modest running goals in the coming year, but I’m still looking forward to getting out there and logging some miles. I’ll be taking break from full marathons for a while instead focusing on shorter distances like the All American Half Marathon in Fayetteville in March and the Bull City Racefest in Durham in October. I also hope to finally break past the 1,000 mile mark in 2015 (a milestone that eluded me last year) and maybe take in a 10K or two. Whatever your running goals in the coming year, I hope you enjoy the journey and try a new running trail or two as you train for your next race. Maybe I’ll see you out there on the Greenway one weekend. Until then – run strong!

Sir Walter Miler – Friday August 1st!

SirWalterMilerFlyer

Sir Walter Miler ~ Friday August 1st

The inaugural Sir Walter Miler will take place on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Meredith College Track. The event will start at 9pm. The event is building on the success of the 2013 “Sandman Mile” event that saw former multiple time NC High School State Champion and NCAA All American, Sandy Roberts, take aim at the 4 minute mile barrier.

Kicking off the night off is the Great Outdoor Provision Co. “Raleigh’s Finest” Mile, where many local celebrities will compete in an exciting, handicapped/head start race. Leading the field is former Mayor Charles Meeker. Meeker competed in 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon 10 times. He has a personal best marathon time of 2:43:36.

Next up is the Capital RunWalk “Women’s Sub 4.5 Challenge,” where top female runners will take a crack at the 4:30 barrier. The talented field of women will be announced over the coming weeks at SirWalterMiler.com, and through the events official FacebookTwitter, and Instagram accounts.

The races conclude with the Capital RunWalk “Men’s Sub 4 Challenge,” where the field will be set up for a sub 4:00 attempt. Sandy Roberts will look to improve on his personal best time of 4:01.24. He’ll be joined by a great field, that we’ll announce one by one over the coming weeks. The first challenger we’re excited to announce is last year’s surprise 4th place finished at the USATF Outdoor Championships, Matt Elliott. Elliot was recently dubbed the “Fastest Kindergarten Teacher in America” and was on the cover of the June 2014 issue ofRunning Times. The event will also be an official “Bring Back the Mile” Featured Event.

The event will have a few more exciting components that will engage the running and non-running community alike. First off, on Thursday night, July 31st, there will be a special “Eat with the Pros” dinner at the Busy Bee Cafe in downtown Raleigh. Food will be prepared by Chef Dave Mitchell and beverages will be served by Busy Bee owners Chris Powers and David Lockwood. This will give fans a chance to rub elbows with some top notch runners. More details are on the Kickstarter campaign page, which can be found at http://SirKickstarter.com

The Kickstarter campaign will help fill out the fields for the free to the public event and will help cover associated costs and expenses. In terms of Kickstarter rewards; in addition to the Busy Bee dinner, the Sir Walter Miler will offer a one month coaching plan and consultation from University of North Carolina assistant coach, Logan Roberts. This plan will include complimentary entree to the Magnificent Mile in downtown Raleigh on September 14, 2014. There is also an opportunity to fire the starters pistol at one of the races, as well as a coffee mug with Oak City Coffee Roasters Coffee, a pint glass, an event tank top, and a Brooks Technical running shirt.

On the day of the race, there will be a pre and post-race party at Raleigh Brewing Company (across the street from Meredith College). Starting at 7pm that night, there will be live music, giveaways, and multiple food trucks.

If you’re over 21 years old, we’ll have an exciting event at RBC called the “Sub 4 ABV Challenge” where Raleigh Brewing, Trophy Brewing, Fullsteam Brewing, New Belgium Brewing, Mystery Brewing, and Natty Greene’s Brewing will be providing a keg of their best low alcohol beer!

The action continues Saturday morning with 2012 USATF Cross Country Champion, Bobby Mack, leading the pros from the night before, and anyone else who wants to come on a trail run at Umstead Park. The event will start at 7:30am at the Harrison Road entrance (exit 287 off of I-40). It is free to attend.

Big Boss Run Club 3rd Anniversary Party ~ Tuesday May 13, 2014

bigboss1

The Big Boss Run Club held its first group run back on May 10th, 2011. Organized by a group of friends with a shared passion for running and craft beer,  Jon Odgers, Win Bassett, Greg Mulholland, and Ben Gaddy created what has become one of the most popular brewery supported run clubs in the Triangle. This Tuesday, May 13th at 6:30pm the club will celebrate it’s  3rd Anniversary with a special celebration including raffle prizes, food trucks, great beer, and of course plenty of running with friends.

As usual Jon Odgers, also know as @beerandracing, will be there Tuesday night to kickoff the group run at 7pm. The run offers a choice of 3,4,5 or 6 mile routes that can be easily adjusted to the distance of your choice.  To mark the special occasion the evening will also include  free raffle drawings for cool swag from Big Boss and a gift certificate for the Great Outdoor Provision Company. The race director for the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon will be on hand with a special one night special registration offer and The nOg Run Club will also be selling raffle tickets and taking donations for The Runners Remembered Fund. This special fund was set up to benefit the families of the runners who passed away racing the recent Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon.

In addition to the normal $3 Tuesday special and the full Big Boss lineup, the 3rd anniversary celebration will feature a special draft selection pulled from the Big Boss cellar for runners to enjoy! Three great local food trucks will be at the Brewery Tuesday night offering food for sale to hungry runners. Trucks scheduled are Deli-icious Truck with their menu featuring sandwiches, vegetarian dishes and other healthy options. They will be  joined by Dump Pho King Truck serving pho and dumplings plus Iced Cupcakes with dessert.

I have been going to the Big Boss Rub Club for three years now and I credit the fun atmosphere of this group with helping me discover the friendly running culture of the Triangle. This is a great group of people that is welcoming to runners of all levels. Whether you are new to running or an experienced runner looking for a group of fun people to run with, I highly recommend you stop by Big Boss for a Tuesday evening run soon. See you on the Greenway!

Triangle Social Run Clubs & Races!

Picture I took Over My Head While Running In The 2013 Krispy Kreme Challenge

About two years ago I discovered the joys of running. I’m not really a hardcore runner, but I have slowly worked my way up from running my first 5K back in 2010 to completing my very first half marathon, The Tobacco Road Half, just last month. Along the way I have come to recognize the amazing running culture here in the Triangle. Not only are there tons of great local races, but there are also a number of fantastic run clubs that add a great socializing aspect to running that makes the whole experience even more fun and rewarding.

These informal run clubs are comprised of runners of all levels that meet each week to run, hangout, and maybe drink a beer or two. They are very casual, free to join (just show up) and are a great way to keep your weekly runs interesting and meet new people. Many of the clubs meet at local breweries or pubs so after the run it is easy for people regroup for a drink and compare notes about upcoming races.

Runners Meeting At Big Boss Brewery Before Their Weekly Run

I live in Raleigh so the run club I frequent most is the Big Boss Brewery Run Club. It meets each Tuesday at 7pm at Big Boss Brewery. There are four official routes (3.1, 4, 5 or 6 miles) that offer a combination of greenway and road running depending on the distance you choose. Afterwards, runners meet back at the brewery to enjoy some local beer and there is often a food truck on the scene as well. It isn’t uncommon to see people running with a baby jogger or a leashed dog in tow. All in all it is very inclusive and a great time!

Additional Triangle Run Clubs
I love the Bog Boss Run Club, but there are several other awesome run clubs throughout the Triangle. You can find a great list of Triangle Area Socila Run Clubs organized along the right hand side the Beer & Racing Blog here. While you’re there, check out Jon’s recap of his recent races. I find them very helpful when researching potential races to enter.

As I mentioned, there are also a number of awesome races held in the Triangle each year. I’ve focused the list below on longer distance races  like half and full Marathons.
