New Lunch Spot: Kiwi Cafe & Smoothies in Wakefield

Kiwi Cafe Raleigh 5

Seating at Kiwi Café & Smoothies

Every once in a while there is a place I have on my list to check out and for one reason or another I just takes me forever to make it there. This was the case with Kiwi Cafe & Smoothies located in Wakefield by the Rex Wellness Center and Harris Teeter off Falls of Neuse Road. A friend on twitter alerted me to their opening several months ago and I’ve had them on my radar for a while. A few weeks ago I finally had the chance to check them out for lunch. I’m really glad I finally checked them out because I’ve been looking for a new lunch spot and I was very impressed with their offerings.

Kale and Apple Salad

Kiwi Café offers a wide range of salads, soups, sandwiches and smoothies. What really sets them apart is that the ingredients they use are in many cases non-gmo or organic. They also offer gluten free breads, pastries, and cookies which can be hard to find in this area. My wife ordered the Kale and Apple salad which included fresh kale, spinach, sliced apples, carrots, berries, goat cheese, pecans, with a honey lemon-lime dressing. The salad was very fresh and made for a great lunch.

Smoked Turkey and Gruyere

I ordered the Smoked Turkey and Gruyere sandwich which is comprised of freshly sliced smoked turkey breast, gruyere, cranberries, arugula-spinach mix, pecans, basil aioli. My sandwich was delicious and I would definitely order it again. I think it is important to point out that I ordered my sandwich as a panini, but what I got I’d describe as a lightly toasted sandwich, not really a panini. Still it was quite good. I kind of wish it came with chips or a pickle but to be honest I could do with a few less chips in my life.

Coffee Counter at Kiwi Cafe

Kiwi also has a full coffee bar offering a full range of coffee and espresso drinks. They use an organic coffee from a roaster out in Greensboro called Fortuna. While I find this coffee to be nice, I have to admit it would be even better to see them use one of Raleigh’s local roasters to keep with their stay “local” theme. They also offer a selection of fruit smoothies. I haven’t had a chance to try one yet, but plan to on my next visit.

Kiwi Café & Smoothies in Wakefield

My wife and I both really enjoyed our meals and I definitely plan to go back for lunch again soon. It is nice to have a locally owned place to grab a healthy lunch and I definitely recommend giving them a try. Kiwi Café is open Monday through Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday 8am-4pm. They are closed on Sunday.

Koinonia Coffee House In Durham Brings Coffee To The Community

DSC06717

Koinonia Coffee House

You will find Koinonia Coffee House tucked away in a strip mall just off South Miami Boulevard in the RTP area of Durham. Koinonia is one of the latest additions to the growing Triangle coffee scene having only opened its doors a little less than a year ago (December 2012). I stopped by a few weeks ago before the morning rush and found it to be a great place to relax with some great coffee and get some work done.

Looking at the Coffee Bar

I like local businesses that use local products, so I was pleased to learn they use locally roasted Joe Van Gogh coffee beans at Koinonia. They make a variety of coffee and espresso signature drinks (I love lattes made with Joe Van Gogh espresso beans). They also have a nice glass case filled with locally made baked goods and pastries like Cakes by Faith and Sweet Jane’s.

Booth Seating with Nice Lighting

In Greek Koinonia means “community” or “fellowship” and that is what this coffee house strives to provide. It is a great space for meeting people and can accommodate larger groups or meetups. It occupies a relatively large space with ample seating options ranging from tables for two, comfy chairs, and booths for larger groups.

Seating & Stage In Back

There is a blossoming music scene developing at Koinonia. Every Wednesday they hold an Open-Mic night from 8 – 10 PM. There is a small   10′ x 8′ stage set up in the back of the shop along with a sound system that can easily accommodate a solo artist or small group setups. They also regularly feature live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Check out their facebook page for updates on the music schedule.

Bulk Joe Van Gogh Coffee Beans For Sale

There is a nice display that the owners built that features ten different types of Joe Van Gogh coffee beans that you can weigh out and purchase. They even have a grinder you can use if you don’t have one at home. I love that you can buy loose coffee beans since it allows you to buy in any portion size you want allowing for easy experimentation without committing to buying a full pound of coffee beans.

Great Seating Area

In addition to all their coffee offerings the shop also makes a full line of fruit smoothies made with fruit mixes from Sweet Bird Smoothie mix. All of the Sweetbird Smoothies are free from high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives and genetically modified ingredients. I didn’t have a chance to try a smoothie during my visit, but I hope to get one when I go back.

The Coffee Bar

On December 14th the shop will host a special Christmas Program with live music from the Bethesda Bluegrass Band and McLamb, Mullen & Preddy. Tickets are FREE but need to be picked up prior to the event.
