Tour De Fat in Returns to Durham this Saturday!

NEWB-497_2015_TDF_Durham_5.5x4.25_Ad_F.indd

Tour de Fat is New Belgium Brewing’s traveling celebration of all things bicycle to increase awareness and participation in cycling as a sustainable form of transportation. Each year Tour de Fat travels to 10 cities across the U.S. The day-long festivities are free in every city, but the proceeds from beer sales go to local non-profits.

The events kick off with a costumed bicycle parade around downtown Durham that will wind through downtown Durham, ending in grassy area by the Durham Performing Arts Center. That’s when eclectic entertainment takes over from musical acts to yo-yo performers, bike contests and even vaudeville acts (great people watching). To get a sense of what this family friendly event is like check out the short video below. To view the schedule of events on Saturday in Durham visit http://www.newbelgium.com/events/tour-de-fat/durham.aspx.

If you want to get a “Carnie Cut” to sport at the event make sure you stop by Pedro Williams in Durham on Friday. See details here. If you are in Raleigh you may also want to checkout the Yelp Pre-Party Kickoff Event at the Raleigh Historic Depot (Tasty Beverage, Jose & Sons, Videri Chocolate Factory) and take the train over to Durham.

The 11th Annual Beaver Queen Pageant, a free and fun event, will be held on Saturday, June 6th in the meadow at Duke Park (Acadia at Knox Street) in Durham. Pre-pageant activities will begin at 4pm, and the pageant will start at 5pm. The theme for this year’s pageant is “Beavers do Bollywood!”

The Beaver Queen Pageant is one of Durham’s marquee events and is rich in the history and culture of the community. Started in 2005 by members of the Duke Park neighborhood in order to protect beavers from a potentially harmful road construction project; it has grown into a large scale event that attracts hundreds of people from all over the Triangle who are interested in protecting wetlands and want to give a helping hand to beavers. It is a free, family-friendly beaver ‘beauty pageant’ that is a creative outlet for both the contestants and the audience.

As with every pageant the five beaver-drag contestants will walk the swamp-way in their evening gown attire, participate in an interview, and showcase their skills in the talent section.  The judges are anything but impartial as the audience ‘bribes’ them to support the performer they like the best, adding to the entertainment value of the event. WUNC’s Frank Stasio will serve as emcee for the fourth straight year.

This annual event in Duke Park is a hit with kids of all ages due to the outrageous costumes and audience engagement. More than just being fun, it honors diversity, supports community, promotes creativity, and adds to the uniqueness of Durham. Food trucks on site will include Only Burger, Sympathy for the Deli, Pie Pushers, and The Parlour. There will also be a Locopops cart and a Scrap Exchange booth where people of all ages can make their own beaver tails! Dressing up is encouraged.

The event is a fundraiser for the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association and its purpose is to raise awareness of our community’s waterways and pockets of nature, and to raise money to help protect and restore these precious resources for all to enjoy.

ECWA encourages community involvement with Ellerbe Creek and the land alongside it, through workdays, nature hikes, and outreach into schools and neighborhoods that border the creek. Long-term goals for the organization include creating an interconnected network of trails and nature preserves linking downtown to Falls Lake, restoring water quality and habitat in Ellerbe Creek, and creating spaces for people in the community to enjoy.

Help Cocoa Cinnamon Open a Second Shop in Durham

Untitled

Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham, NC

Cocoa Cinnamon is my favorite place to get coffee in Durham. They are a multi-roaster shop offering carefully crafted coffee and espresso drinks, chocolate and tea and locally made baked goods & desserts. The space is fantastic too with both indoor and outdoor seating that serves as a nice transition from to active Geer Street location in Durham’s “DIY” (Do It Yourself) district. But this is no ordinary coffee shop. Cocoa Cinnamon’s owners, Leon and Areli Barrera de Grodski, see their business as a community oriented shop providing a living wage to their employees and a welcoming environment to customers that is “open to all people and strives, through commerce and service, to support a sustainable, democratic and artistic way of being.”

Local engagement is an important part of what makes Cocoa Cinnamon such a special place. They are currently working on opening a second shop in Durham and using Community Sourced Capital campaign to raise part of the funds needed to make the second shop a reality. This is an opportunity for the community to be a part of the local movement and show support for local small businesses by becoming a “squareholder” and making a small (increments of $50) interest free loan to support the second shop.

These funds will go towards tangible things, like outdoor seating, a new espresso machine, and a unique space designed through the collaboration of local artists. It will also help Cocoa Cinnamon create a thriving business that will bring in the income to pay more than a living wage and enable them to offer career positions for their long term crew and deepen their ability to help build opportunity in the local community.

If you are looking for a great coffee experience I highly recommend a visit to Cocoa Cinnamon. To be a part of the community support behind their second shop and learn more about how to become a squareholder visit their Community Sourced Capital campaign website here.

Picture of the Week: Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham

Duke Garden

Tulips at Duke Gardens in Durham

This past weekend my wife and I made the short trip to Durham to explore the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on Saturday. We got caught in a brief sun shower while browsing the vast garden paths that wander through 55 acres, but it was well worth it to catch the flowers in full bloom on such  a mild day. I took the picture above while exploring the colorful tulips growing on the historic terraces by the fish pool. This is easily one of the most beautiful sections of the garden and a popular spot for photographs. The gardens are open daily from 8am until dusk. Admission is free but you do need to pay for parking ($2 per hour). For more information visit https://gardens.duke.edu.
