First Bloom – Triangle Gardens!

Untitled

After 7 weeks of hiding my potted sunflower plants from the deer each night I was finally rewarded with the first bloom today! The wet spring and mild summer has resulted in a vibrant landscape in the Triangle this season. If you would like to get out and see some of the area flora for yourself here my recommendations – all FREE:

  1. Sunflower field between mile 23 & 24 of the Neuse Greenway
  2. Sarah P. Duke Gardens – Durham
  3. JC Raulston Arboretum – Raleigh
  4. Raleigh Rose Garden

I can’t grow much in my yard because I don’t have a fence and my plants usually just end up as deer food. So I’m glad I have managed to grow this sunflower and claim a minor gardening victory! I’m also grateful for the public gardens we have access to here in the Triangle. No matter what you do this weekend I hope you are enjoying this great weather we are experiencing and spending as much time outside as possible. Happy exploring!

SirWalterMilerFlyer

Sir Walter Miler ~ Friday August 1st

The inaugural Sir Walter Miler will take place on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Meredith College Track. The event will start at 9pm. The event is building on the success of the 2013 “Sandman Mile” event that saw former multiple time NC High School State Champion and NCAA All American, Sandy Roberts, take aim at the 4 minute mile barrier.

Kicking off the night off is the Great Outdoor Provision Co. “Raleigh’s Finest” Mile, where many local celebrities will compete in an exciting, handicapped/head start race. Leading the field is former Mayor Charles Meeker. Meeker competed in 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon 10 times. He has a personal best marathon time of 2:43:36.

Next up is the Capital RunWalk “Women’s Sub 4.5 Challenge,” where top female runners will take a crack at the 4:30 barrier. The talented field of women will be announced over the coming weeks at SirWalterMiler.com, and through the events official FacebookTwitter, and Instagram accounts.

The races conclude with the Capital RunWalk “Men’s Sub 4 Challenge,” where the field will be set up for a sub 4:00 attempt. Sandy Roberts will look to improve on his personal best time of 4:01.24. He’ll be joined by a great field, that we’ll announce one by one over the coming weeks. The first challenger we’re excited to announce is last year’s surprise 4th place finished at the USATF Outdoor Championships, Matt Elliott. Elliot was recently dubbed the “Fastest Kindergarten Teacher in America” and was on the cover of the June 2014 issue ofRunning Times. The event will also be an official “Bring Back the Mile” Featured Event.

The event will have a few more exciting components that will engage the running and non-running community alike. First off, on Thursday night, July 31st, there will be a special “Eat with the Pros” dinner at the Busy Bee Cafe in downtown Raleigh. Food will be prepared by Chef Dave Mitchell and beverages will be served by Busy Bee owners Chris Powers and David Lockwood. This will give fans a chance to rub elbows with some top notch runners. More details are on the Kickstarter campaign page, which can be found at http://SirKickstarter.com

The Kickstarter campaign will help fill out the fields for the free to the public event and will help cover associated costs and expenses. In terms of Kickstarter rewards; in addition to the Busy Bee dinner, the Sir Walter Miler will offer a one month coaching plan and consultation from University of North Carolina assistant coach, Logan Roberts. This plan will include complimentary entree to the Magnificent Mile in downtown Raleigh on September 14, 2014. There is also an opportunity to fire the starters pistol at one of the races, as well as a coffee mug with Oak City Coffee Roasters Coffee, a pint glass, an event tank top, and a Brooks Technical running shirt.

On the day of the race, there will be a pre and post-race party at Raleigh Brewing Company (across the street from Meredith College). Starting at 7pm that night, there will be live music, giveaways, and multiple food trucks.

If you’re over 21 years old, we’ll have an exciting event at RBC called the “Sub 4 ABV Challenge” where Raleigh Brewing, Trophy Brewing, Fullsteam Brewing, New Belgium Brewing, Mystery Brewing, and Natty Greene’s Brewing will be providing a keg of their best low alcohol beer!

The action continues Saturday morning with 2012 USATF Cross Country Champion, Bobby Mack, leading the pros from the night before, and anyone else who wants to come on a trail run at Umstead Park. The event will start at 7:30am at the Harrison Road entrance (exit 287 off of I-40). It is free to attend.

Brew Coffee Bar Raleigh

BREW ~ Coming Soon to Downtown Raleigh!

Brew business partners AJ Viola and Mike Sholar have already started construction on the shop working with local architects and designers on the design of the 1,150-square-foot space that they plan to open sometime in August. They’ve launched a kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for some of the finishing touches that will allow the shop to deliver the best experience to customers. “We’re coming to Kickstarter because we want to give our community the opportunity to get involved in making Brew happen,” they write on the campaign page. Sol Tacos ~ Gourmet Southern Tacos with Local Ingredients

Sol Tacos

When summer rolls around I can pretty much live off tacos. Thankfully my friend Art over at the Wandering Sheppard shared the news earlier this spring about a great new food truck  called Sol Tacos. It’s a gourmet food truck that serves southern inspired tacos using soft hand made tortillas filled with locally sourced southern organic ingredients that compliment classic Mexican street food.

The truck is based out of Cary and operated by chef Andy Schaumann (follow him on twitter @Sol_Tacos). Schaumann has a long history of working in great restaurants having most recently worked at well the known Vivaci in North Hills. You can tell he pours his heart & soul into his business and it really comes out in the culinary creations he serves from the truck.

When I first visited the truck the daily tacos being offered included a Buttermilk Fried flounder taco with cilantro sour cream, lettuce, and citrus radish salad. Other offerings include a blackened chicken nacho taco and the cheddar chuck burger. I’m a big fan of the fish taco but look forward to trying the chicken nacho taco next!

A new addition to the taco menu this 4th of July weekend is a special pork taco made with local beer braised pork, pickled okra, hot banana peppers, chicharones, and western BBQ.

Sol Tacos

Sol Tacos also features a selection of creative sides that rotates seasonally. This week’s side items include local sliced heirloom tomatoes from birdland farms with lime aioli, maldon sea salt, balsamic, and olive oil. Another new offering is the “personal nachos” with organic corn chips, ground chuck, black beans, shredded cheese, queso dip, tomato salsa, sour cream, hot sauce.

You can find the bright green Sol Tacos truck this fourth of July weekend all over the Triangle. Starting on Thursday night (7/3) at Deep River Brewing in Clayton, Friday (7/4) at Knightdale Station Parks fireworks celebration, Saturday morning (7/5) at Apex Farmers Market, & then Sunday (7/6) at Raleigh Brewing Company. To keep tabs on where the truck will be next and visit their monthly calendar here.

Yellow Dog Bread Hosts Latte Art Throwdown June 26th

yellowdogtnt

Yellow Dog Bread Company in downtown Raleigh is set to host this month’s Triangle “Thursday Night Throwdown” (TNT) latte art competition this Thursday at 7:30pm. During the event local baristas will compete head to head creating beautiful latte art that will be evaluated by a panel of three judges. The public is invited to attend an enjoy the show. Jenny Bonchak of Slingshot Coffee Co. and Chef Scott Crawford from the soon to be Standard Foods have been announced as judges. A third “mystery judge” will be revealed on Thursday night.

The purpose of these friendly competitions is to cultivate a coffee culture that respects presentation and quality coffee drinks and provides an opportunity for the local coffee community to come together and have some fun! They are also entertaining to attend. In addition to free/pretty lattes (attendees can drink the lattes created during the competition), there will be House made baguette pizzas and local beer from Raleigh Brewing.

Latte Art

Latte art is typically judged based on four criteria: balance and symmetry, use of space, color contrast and definition, and overall impression.  The judges compare the appearance of drinks based on these factors and decide which barista will move on to the next round. After several rounds of competition, the field is narrowed down to two baristas to face off one last time to crown the ultimate champion of the evening.
